Tools and Hardware Reviews of Thomas & Betts RC3030D Extend-A-Chime

Customer Review: Does not work as advertised
Summary: 1 Stars

Installed the extender as directed and tested it with Bell about 10' from transmitter - worked as expected.

However, when I moved the Bell to the basement (which is about 25' and down one floor from the transmitter), unit did not work UNLESS the door bell button was held down for about 3 seconds. Unfortunately, most visitors do not hold down the door bell button long enough. I suppose I could put a small sign over our door bell stating 'please hold down button for 3 seconds' but my wife is not going to approve.
The problem is the transmitter does not power up until the door bell button is pressed and then only transmits while the button is depressed. If the Bell is close and picks up the signal, it works but for long range applications, the transmit time is too short. Guess I'm going to be snaking wires in the wall.

Customer Review: Remote doorbell
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this remote door bell to replace one I bought years ago at Brookstone, which finally wore out. There were absolutely no problems installing that one. This unit, however, was very temperamental to get working. My remote location is a back bedroom, which is 43 feet from the chime where the remote's sending unit is wired in (not nearly the 100 feet advertised). It would work the first time the door bell was used, but would not work after that (it did work when I moved the remote chime to an outlet 15 feet away). Over 3 days I repositioned the sending unit (several ways), aiming it in the direction of the bedroom. The best I could do was to get the remote chime to work occasionally. I reversed the wires and repositioned the sending unit, and now it's working consistantly, and as long as it's working I'm not touching it again.

Customer Review: Cheap, quick, reliable solution.
Summary: 5 Stars

We just moved, and our new home is an older house that's built pretty solid. The doorbell is on the main floor, and if we were in the basement or upstairs, we couldn't hear the doorbell unless the house was completely silent.

So I bought one of the doorbell extenders, with one receiver upstairs in my office, and a second receiver (purchased separately) in the basement by the TV. It works great. It took two minutes to install, and the receivers respond immediately upon doorbell press.

The first receiver is about 20ft away, through a floor and a wall.
The second receiver is about 35ft away, through a floor and two walls.
I haven't had any interference problems with other wireless devices in the house.

Customer Review: Easy to install, works great
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this wireless doorbell extender because we sometimes couldn't hear the doorbell (upstairs) when we were in our family room (downstairs). Installation takes about 5 mintues: Connect the three wires on the transmitter to the three screw posts on the doorbell (it connects to the box inside the house where the doorbell sound comes from, not to the doorbell button outside), and mount the transmitter to the doorbell cover using the double-stick tape provided. The receiver then plugs into any AC wall outlet. The receiver has a volume control, and the different choices for the chime (Ding-Dong, Westminster, etc.) are set by changing jumpers on the transmitter. It works very reliably, always sounding whenever the doorbell is pressed.

Customer Review: great, simple item
Summary: 5 Stars

This thing is great. We could never hear our doorbell when we were in the basement watching TV, and really didn't want to replace the old one. It only took a few minutes to screw this into the existing doorbell and plug in the chime downstairs, and the problem was solved. I purchased a second chime to go upstairs.

I was able to tape the small unit to the outside of the old chime in a way that is not too obtrusive, and makes it possible to change the chime without removing anything. It is annoying that they used a jumper to set the chime -- you will need to use tweezers to change it -- and the default chime is a bit annoying, but that is only a minor complaint.
