Tools and Hardware Reviews of Tjernlund Products Dryer Duct Booster, Model# LB1Customer Review: Installation restrictions. Summary: 4 Stars
I have about 50ft of run from my dryer to the outside wall if you consider two 90 degree turns (each equivlent to 5ft of run). My duct work was full of lint because, obviously, there was not enough push from my dryer fan to the outside. I liked this product because it separated the motor from the fan. Believe me, there is a lot of lint that moves through the duct work. You do not want it to get stuck in you motor. Before buying this product you must read the installation restrictions. They are at the Tjernlund web site. In brief, the unit is 10.5" from top to bottom and 14" from front to back (be sure you have the room for it). The unit has a PRC (pressure response control) that senses the pressure in your duct system. The unit must be placed so the sensing tube is on the top or on the side but not on the bottom when installed. The air flows through the unit in just one direction so the unit has to be positioned in your duct work in just that direction. It can be positioned either horizontal or vertical but it is recommended that it not be installed closer then 15 equivalent feet (equivalent meaning add 5ft for a 90 degree turn and 2.5ft for a 45) from your dryer or 5 equivalent ft from your outside opening. In all of the run I had I only ended up with one 2ft space that would accomodate this unit. When I finally got it installed I calibrated it as directed. It went through the motions the instructions said it would but when I turned on the dryer to dry something the booster would not turn on. I calibrated it no less then 10 times with no eventual sucess. I was about to call Tjernlund when I noted that the sensing tube opening in the duct is not far from the input opening of the duct going into it from the dryer. When I installed all the duct work, I really pushed it together to try to insure I would have no duct leaks (of course, I taped the seams) It occurred to me that I might have pushed the input duct so far into the unit that I might be obstruction the sensor opening. I backed the duct going into the unit out about an inch and retaped the seam. The unit works as expected. It turns on about 15 seconds after the dryer starts and it shuts of when the dryer goes off. Outside, the force of the air blowing out of the duct is considerable and there is a fair amount of lint nearby.
