Tools and Hardware Reviews of NorthPole 2-Room Dome Tent with Canopy - 15ft. x 12ft., Model# 80-1512Customer Review: Disposable Tent Summary: 3 StarsThe first time we set this tent up, we swore we'd never do it again. We gave it a second chance, and it (sort of) proved itself worthy of the price tag.
The first experience: it was dark, and there was a light breeze blowing. This tent is like a kite, so if it's windy, you want a crew of twelve or so to help set it up. We set the entire thing up (incorrectly mind you), but it stood for the night. We tore down and reset in the morning with confusion, help from our neighbors, and mildly more success. It rained that night, and the porch's ground cover became a kiddie-pool, and many an angry curse could be heard as our crew stumbled, unwary, into the pool at the head of the doors.
The second set-up was much more successful. There was a gameplan. A person on each corner, luckily no wind, and advanced knowledge of the intricacies of the rain/shade cover. We enjoyed it for four days, with lots of space inside for a couple of queen air mattresses, and a great chill area out front to hide from the sun. One large key to our success: DON'T USE THE PORCH TARP. It just leads to frustration, pooling of water, bunching, collection of dirt. I can't see how it's really of any use, other than (unfortunately) being a somewhat integral part of the porch's structure (heavy staking got around this).
Finally happy with our purchase, we unpacked it for a third use. In between the first two uses, three of the crossover poles that create and maintain the tent structure had broken, and it's apparent that more will break soon. I'd hate to see this tent get any heavier, but the supplied poles really are too thin and weak to support such a large tent. If I'm able to buy a lifetime supply of poles, I can see getting some more use out of this tent. It's spacious, it kept the rain out, and it's functional.
One other caveat... you won't ever really get it back in the bag it comes in. We tried, but the bag ended up bursting one of its seams when we attempted to "compress" it using the intended zipper system.
Should you buy it? Um... if you're ok with something you'll only get a few uses out of and you're prepared for the frustration... it's a great idea at a great price.
