I have both the finger and thumb guard. I carve using pocket knives, and these have been really helpful. They do take some getting used to, but after I broke mine in the benefits outweighed the different feel. The guards are less about preventing cuts and more about preventing sore digits for me. I choke up on the blade of my knife for more leverage, and the index guard really prevents the soreness I usually have after a few hours. The thumb guard does prevent the little micro-cuts that happen at the end of a cut sometimes, but mainly it just protects from soreness that comes from pulling on cuts toward the thumb. The guards seem designed for hands that are meatier than mine, but they are still pretty comfortable and the elastic keeps them on pretty well. If you are just starting with woodcarving or even if you have been doing it for years, be kind to your fingers. Get this leather thumb guard AND the companion finger guard. They will be your first line of defense against ugly cuts, ouches, and boo boo's. I found them comfortable to wear, and they allowed my fingers to move naturally with no worries, no stiffness. Well worth the price in my estimation! Just make sure you get the product size that fits your thumb and fingers best. Love these little finger and thumb guards - kept me from many trips to the E.R.!!! Maybe I'm lucky or just a little cautious, but they've prevented me from being cut even once since I started using them years ago. Would definitely recommend them to any and all. While this guard has saved my thumb from being scored by my carving tools, I do find myself constantly readjusting it to make sure it doesn't slip off my thumb. Good tool, well made, but could use something to help it be more stable.
