Tools and Hardware Reviews of Tricam MH2425 Universal 16-Inch No Flat Wheelbarrow Tire, YellowCustomer Review: Not standard design for contractor wheelbarrow Summary: 3 Stars
**Update: please see update below** I purchased this Tricam MH2425 to replace the pneumatic 4.80/4.00-8 tire on my Jackson contractor wheelbarrow. I liked the no-flat principle as that can be a real time saver on the job site or my rural Texas residence. The bold yellow is very eye catching, appears to have solid design and construction. However, the real problem I have with the wheel is not the product manufacture, but the product design, i.e. Non-standard axle dimension. All wheelbarrow wheels I have seen (confirmed at local depot) or owned ( I have 4 around the shop) have axles that extend past the width of the tire to approximately 6 inches in width. This Tricam tire appears to be about 4.5 inches axle width. This poses a problem with mounting on the 5/8" axle. The space between the wheel and the axle bracket allows the wheel to "slop" around the axle possibly riding against the mounting bolts for the nose piece. I solved the problem using a "home made" bushing cut from electrical conduit. In my opinion, the product description should show the axle dimension as the wheel is NOT truly a universal replacement without the buyer having to do some tinkering.
Wheel put to the test: I used the wheel to move over 250 pounds of sand, cement, rocks, and it held up to the task. While rolling the wheel under load, I could hear the tire making a squishing sound as it rolled. Because of this, I do have doubts whether the polyurethane foam will hold up to contractor grade use, but I do not have any experience with these type tires to compare. Perhaps for occasional residential use it will be just fine.
**UPDATE**
Further use has revealed a few flaws which forces me to lower the rating for this product.
First, the compression of the tire allows the "donut" to move about within the wheel hub. This makes the loading a bit unstable and at times greatly increases the rolling resistance. Not what you want on a wheelbarrow.
Second, and more critically, my wheel broke during use with a very light load. The bearings are merely press fit into the hub with no weld or other mechanical means of securing to the hub. The bearing popped off the hub and now I will have to spot weld it to the hub. What a nightmare for a seemingly simple product. I can only compare to my 20+ year old wheels that have survived a >100x longer in time and use. What a shame products like this one are sold.
