Tools and Hardware Reviews of Triton MOF001C 2-1/4-Horsepower Precision Router KitCustomer Review: Jack of all trades tool! Summary: 5 Stars
I have had this router for about a year now and have used it both in a router table and in hand held mode. Overall I am very happy with this thing. I got a little wordy so skip to the last paragraph if you just want my "bottom line".
First, let me give you an idea of my perspective. I am the kind of person who is often building something - furniture, etc - so I would call myself a hobbyist that uses my tools for a variety of applications with pretty regularly. I am not a professional/semi professional woodworker by any means. From some of the negative reviews I saw on this product this thing might not be at that level. This is my second router. The first one I bought from sears in a bundle that included a basic little router table. Turns out that, despite being bundled with the table, the sears router was not designed to hang upside down because the router would slide down and make the bit move. Unbelievably frustrating! That router will probably be ok in hand held mode (but the Triton does better upside down or right side up)
Now for the Triton. I ended up getting this router from a different seller for about the same price and it ended up being a stroke of luck because it came with the bushing kit. It look' like the same router on Amazon doesn't have the bushing set. I have used the router in hand held mode and found it to be a good performer. I recently used the circle cutter and was perfectly satisfied with the performance of the product. I also attached another circle cutting device (Jasper 400) in order to make circles smaller than the Triton one can do and it worked out fine (Note: turns out the jasper doesn't have holes for the Triton, I had to make an adapter). I have used the guide bushings (as I mentioned, doesn't look like they are included in the Amazon one) and I really liked them. Finally I have used the tool installed in a router table and was happy with that as well. Compared to my previous router the Triton is powerful, solid, and a jack of all trades. It does seem a little complicated. There are a multitude of ways to adjust the height and set stops. You have to read the instructions (which are decent, nice pictures, definitely written by somebody that speaks English) and after you have read the instructions you will have to play with the router for a while to get a hang of it. I still find the variety of depth setting options and methods a little confusing but I am able to accurately and fairly quickly set a desired depth by doing the push button and spin handle to get close and fine tune with the fine tune knob on top of the router. I read a review that said that the fine tuning mechanism is a little delicate so I always use the coarse adjustment mechanism for large adjustments and fine tune with the fine tuner. I am also careful to stop fine tuning when I run into the depth stop. So far I haven't had a problem with stripping out the little gears.
As other reviewers have mentioned it is a little awkward getting under the table to do the coarse depth depth adjustment and to flip the power switch. The router sits nicely upside down for bit changes in hand held mode. With the self locking mechanism bit changes are very pleasant compared to my previous router. The wrench included for bit changes is a real wrench, not something stamped out of a sheet of metal like you typically see. The case for the router is also nice. It is the typical plastic case, but it has hinges instead of just thin plastic that flexes and eventually breaks. Everything fits nicely in the case, which is handy since I don't have anywhere to leave my router set up.
Not too long ago I screwed up a cut because the depth shifted. I think that it occurred because the coarse adjustment handle wasn't locked so it moved a bit as the locking mechanism snapped into place while I was cutting. Operator error. However, since it is really easy I think that I will just set the depth stop once I have a depth set from now on.
I researched a bunch of routers when I was considering this one. For someone like me that uses a router in a variety of ways with some regularity this router is an excellent option. It does everything pretty well. If you are going to use a router once a year for an odd job don't get this router, you will forget how it works. If you have the money and space to own 6 different routers then maybe another router is for you. Many other nice routers cost more and don't have nearly as many features as this thing. As I mentioned in my ramble above I have tried this router out in all kinds of applications and have been very happy with the results. While a router lift will almost certainly be easier to operate than the built in router lift function of this router, router lifts are also pretty expensive (and you still need a router!). I am very happy with the function and quality of this router.
