Tools and Hardware Reviews of Triton PRA001 Powered Respirator

Customer Review: Ultimate solution for pollen allergy
Summary: 5 Stars

PREFACE. I was looking for an inexpensive PAPR (powered air-purifying respirator) for couple years and finally bought this one. The prices for PAPRs are so high because until recently they were made for industry, mainly for automotive body painting. These other high-end industrial PAPRs (main of each is 3M 3M OH&ESD 022-00-03R01 "BREATHE EASY" TURBO POWERED AIR PURIFYING RESPIRATOR) (total set is about $700) are designed for longer work between charges, higher air speed and higher degree of purification than needed for pollen allergies.

TRITON. I have been using the Triton (bought on sale for $180 at Amazon) and I like it very much. It completely (99%) solved my pollen allergy problems. In previous years I used to hide in air-conditioned places for all pollen season which takes about 2-3 spring months. The exceptions for going outside in these times were hours after rain (when pollen is washed down by rain) and near big lakes when wind blows from the lake. This year I used 3M 8271 P95 10/pk 3m Respirators recommended to me by someone professionally using it as protection at work. P95 stands for 95% purification from particulate dust. 3M P05 masks did there job very well, they are relatively cheap (10 masks for $25), it is relatively easy to breath in them, but they start to smell after about 40 minutes of use and they don't protect eyes. I found that using P95 mask delays the allergy symptoms for hour or two, but the pollen gets in the eyes and finally I get full allergy reaction.
Triton is designed very well. It is apparently designed by smart engineers and passed via trail-error design process many times. All parts are tuned up very well, it is so rare nowadays to meet a product so well adjusted and thought through. It is designed primarily *not for allergies* but for wood sawing works. Therefore comes the appearance and noise protection. All parts are very basic, I would say "Wal-Mart" quality, they certainly work, but are optimized for low price. The on-belt unit contains very basic soldered in batteries, a motor, couple of disposable filters and a pre-filter. I suppose when batteries and filters will be used up, it may be possible to find them cheaply on the web. At least they look very standard. Another thought is that it may be beneficial to buy another Triton and have one charged while another is in use.
The helmet looks heavy and feels heavy when is in the bag (I bought a simple fabric food shopping bag for $2) and use it for carrying Triton from bike to the office). If looks heavy but doesn't feel heavy on the head. It is very well adjusted I guess based on construction helmets. A wonderful feature is that a transparent face piece (with adjustable spring-screws) can be easily lifted up when needed. It is also very easy to access face for scratching from underneath through the fabric. By the way, it is not necessary to tighten the fabric piece on the neck, the air flow is sufficient to prevent pollen going inside even if the fabric piece is not tightened.
The ear protection pieces work very well for blocking the sound, but I don't need that. Therefore I carefully broke them away. If you do so, make sure not to break away their base parts, as these bases are used to hold the face piece. I closed the ear-piece-openings in the fabric by sewing.
A nice feature is that the flattened air tube goes above the head and outputs the air from above the face down. This provides better air circulation - air flow is directed downwards.
There is enough space in the helmet to wear sunglasses. I think it will be easy to place music player's sound speakers inside. The helmet doesn't feel hot at the sun because it is light, doesn't touch the head and there is air flow.
The filters perfectly filter out all pollen. I have used the helmet under blooming trees for up to an hour and didn't feel any negative symptoms. For control, I tried breathing without helmet and it takes few minutes for me to get pretty bad allergy. So it certainly works.
It is not supposed and doesn't filter out any gaseous smells. For example, under trees I feel some smells but don't develop allergy. But in general most smells (even good ones) disappear.
Hearing and talking is possible but somewhat dumped in the helmet. To hear something from far I had to open face piece.
Psychological considerations. I used first 3M face masks and then Triton mostly on bicycle trail. The public there is takes strange looks easier, but in general 3M mask caused wondering looks and looks full of (not fully justifiable) compassion. Triton, on the contrary, didn't cause any reaction. People somehow filter out anyone who looks like a construction worker. The fact that a construction worker rides a bike didn't bother anyone.
CONS. The only negative thing about the Triton is relatively low airflow. I am on bigger side in air usage, so small people may feel no problem with amount of air. But bigger people especially during exercise would certainly feel lack of fresh air. To be precise, the air doesn't smell anything in the mask, it just doesn't provide enough oxygen. Therefore I have to breath faster than without Triton especially when going uphill. It worried me in the beginning, but later I found that I can live with that. Not having allergy is worth it. In the future I may consider buying a more expensive belt-on piece with more powerful motor and batteries, possibly from 3M's breathe easy.
Overall, I am using Triton for long outside activities like biking or taking long walks. For waling between the car and buildings I still use 3M P95 face masks.
CONCLUSION: It works very well for outside activities to prevent pollen allergy.
