I've been doing woodworking for decades but have never had the need for a spindle sander. Space is at a premium in my small shop, and hence I've always sanded curved edges with a random orbit sander, files, or just plain old sandpaper.
However, I'm now working on a project that has many bandsawn pieces with lots of curves. Using a random orbit sander would be both tedious and awkward, so I decided to get a spindle sander to do the job properly.
I opted for the Triton over the more expensive, more powerful Delta primarily because of size and weight. Due to limited space the sander will be stored in a cabinent and brought out to the benchtop as needed. Benchtop machines are often referred to as "portable", but as you probably know this is quite a flexible term (my Delta planer is advertised as "portable", and it might be if you were an Olympic weight lifter, but not for me). I'm happy to say that the Triton is light enough to be stored fairly easily.
Unlike the experience of some other reviewers, my sander arrived in perfect shape. Set up was very easy (spindle sanders are not complicated machines). Although the photograph shows a black tabletop, its actually silver (just the edges are black). Also, the manual says there are three top washers (these fit over the drums, just below the tightening nut, and come in sizes to roughly match the drum diameters). There are actually four, which is of course a better deal.
The sander is more ruggedly built than I had anticipated. The tabletop is quite substantial, and although the body is plastic it is solid and thick. The on/off switch is a bit flimsy but works fine.
In use the machine has performed admirably. The load on any spindle sander is a function of the surface area that's in contact with the drum at any moment, and since spindle sanders are edge sanders, this means the load is determined by the thichness of the wood you're sanding (and, of course, by the pressure you apply, which should always be light). To test the Triton's capacity I bandsawed a semicircle at the end of a piece of 3" thick mahogany. The diameter was equal to that of the largest drum supplied with the sander, which means that the entire half of the drum would be in contact with the wood surface (and endgrain to boot). So that's pretty close to the maximum load you'd ever apply. The Triton didn't bog in the slightest, even when I pushed with a fair amount of pressure. What a machine!
The manual says that if you're not going to mount the sander on your bench you should bolt it to a board and then clamp the board to the bench. I didn't find this necessary. The Triton never budged in use.
On the downside, the largest drum was slightly too small, so that the sleeve would slip no matter how much I tightened the top nut. This was easily remedied by a couple of winds with duct tape.
My only serious objection was the lack of any storage space for the washers and the supplied wrench. Little parts like these are easy to misplace. You'd think it would have been easy for the manufacturer to fashion some sort of tray in the molded plastic body.
However, that's not enough to reduce my five-star rating. In woodworking you usually get what you pay for, and I've found that it's generally best to pay up for the more powerful machine. The Triton is a happy exception to this rule.
Of course, I don't know how the Triton will perform over the long haul. If you were a professional wordworker using a spindle sander all of the time, maybe the Delta or the even more expensive Jet would be a better choice. But for the non-professional the Triton should do just fine.
