Tools and Hardware Reviews of Troy-Bilt TB310QS Mulchinator 31cc 2-Cycle Gas-Powered 165 MPH Blower/VacuumCustomer Review: Troy Bilt Mulchinator Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this as a VAC only. I have another one I use for the blower...although this one is really easy to change from blower to vac...flip a lever...that easy.
I love the machine. Little heavy, but it does a nice job. I love the deck cleaning attachment with the rollers. One problem though..the machine is heavy to begin with, then you add the cleaning attachment with the rollers and the bag almost has to hit the ground using that tool. There in lies the problem with the bag...I think...the zipper is plastic and I use this vac on my driveway to clean up the leaves and stuff from the Crepe Myrtle...does a wonderful job...but that zipper gets damaged.
The first bag only lasted a couple days...and I emailed TroyBilt. They sent me another bag. I made a conscious effort to keep that bag up as much as I could..I am a woman, 65 years old, 5'5", so that is hard to do and still use the rollers on that cleaning tool...
Well, the second bag lasted longer than the first, but it too became damaged, down at the lowest part of that bag that would be near where it clips to the machine and fills up first with the leaves. I have tried to use a needle and thread to prevent the zipper from going any further down. I have also put some thread glue on it, hoping it will help keep it together...
However, because I had now the two bags, I sorta washed out the first bag that came with the machine...as best I could..only used twice, but it still has a lot of dust, leaves, etc in it...messy to say the least. Anyway, I bought a 17" metal zipper and finally put that zipper in the first bag. I think the metal zipper will handle any dragging on the cement driveway..at least better than the plastic zipper, which gets torn up on concrete.
I do love the machine. I would love to use it more often, but the weight keeps me from dragging it out on a daily basis. I have two little mini Dachshunds and having leaves on the lawn makes it very difficult to find where they did their business...that is why I wanted it in the first place. I use the lawn mower to get most of the leaves, but in between the mowing, I wanted a leaf vac...the Troy Bilt vac is great..but heavy. I'm making a strap and clipping it to the machine in hopes that I can keep that machine up just a wee bit higher off the ground and help save that bag from getting torn up. Dragging, even just a little on that concrete will eventually damage the bag itself...that's where the duck tape will come in.
I have a Toro electric, metal impeller, but I hate the cord. I also hate how you have to switch them over between blower and vac...that is why I got this one as a Vac only...but this one does switch over between vac and blower very easily...flip the lever...but the weight will keep me from dragging this out and use it as a blower. I have a Ryobi blower (gas) that is light, does a great job blowing. I tried buying a second Ryobi to use as a vac...that didn't work out...so I ended up buying the TroyBilt...again, if you're 6'3" and can easily handle the weight, you'll love it. Beware of that plastic zipper. You might even replace the plastic zipper with a metal one right up front..or have your wife replace it right up front...before the bag gets dirty...it was messy putting the zipper in on that bag after it was used twice.
I have great hopes the metal zipper and the home made strap will help out too in keeping the machine or bag from dragging on the concrete. I have pulled that cleaning tool off and that shortens it up somewhat, but that cleaning tool works great on driveways, walkways, decks.... This vac is the only one I've seen that doesn't have a strap on the bag that you put on your shoulder, thereby keeping the bag up higher. I might trying attaching a strap to the metal piece and try
holding the bag up that way...it might cut off the air circulation...I'll keep trying...I do love that cleaning tool...it does a wonderful job on my driveways and sidewalks. Keeping the cleaning tool on while you use it for your lawn helps keep any gumballs out of the machine...which will ruin the impeller, but you can't roll it on the lawn easily...and that tool makes it longer, so you have to lift it higher in order to have it not touching the ground. The wheels help me because of that extra weight. I'm not a wimpy woman, even at 65...I have a Echo gas edger and edge my entire yard with it. I get compliments from so many people on how nice my yard looks...from neighbors, to people actually stopping and asking me what I do to keep my yard looking so nice....my point is I'm use to do my own yard work and doing a good job...but the weight of this machine is pushing my limits and gets my neck/shoulder muscles really mad at me and they tell me in no uncertain terms how much they disliked that activity...so I'm not pulling this out daily. I wish I could. I would be out there with it daily picking up every leaf. Weight and that plastic zipper are my only complaint..other than those two things, I love the machine.

If you're ready to make the move, consider the Troy-Bilt TB310QS: a versatile leaf blower that converts to a leaf vacuum at the flip of a lever. This portable unit is specifically designed for clearing leaves from small- to medium-sized yards. The TB310QS is driven by a 31-cubic-centimeter gas engine that's equipped with an easy-pull spring-assist starting system. The blower creates hurricane-force winds up to 165 miles per hour; that's powerful enough to blast away even damp, matted leaves. Flip the QuickShift lever to switch from blower mode to vacuum. The 13.5-pound unit features a mulching impeller blade that shreds leaves--reducing them at a 10-to-1 ratio--and shoots them into the convenient collection bag. The zippered cloth bag holds about 3/4 of a bushel, and it can be emptied without removing it from the blower. Besides clearing leaves from the lawn, the TB310QS can be used to remove debris from decks, patios and sidewalks. The powerful engine on this Troy-Bilt leaf blower/vacuum is rather loud, so it's advisable to wear hearing protection during use.--Joseph Truini What's in the Box Gas-powered blower/vacuum, cloth collection bag, vacuum kit, instructional booklet
