Tools and Hardware Reviews of Troy-Bilt TB525 EC 17-Inch 29cc 4-Stroke Gas Powered Curve Shaft String Trimmer With Detachable ShaftCustomer Review: Feeling generous, so I'll give 2 stars... Summary: 2 Stars
...but that's one too many. I purchased my Troy Bilt from Lowe's last year, and wish I hadn't. Have experienced the same problems that others have pointed out. The little gas engine runs well, once it warms up, but finicky to get started. Had to adjust the idle setting to keep it running. My biggest gripe is with the 'Speed Spool' head. The first time I had to re-string it with line, I followed the instructions to the letter. But on restarting the trimmer, the line spooled out uncontrollably. The faster the engine ran (and the head rotated) the faster the spool emptied. I went through this 3 times before I finally gave up. Only tonight, after reading some other reviews did I find out that someone else figured out what the problem is. Even though the instruction manual tells you to reload the spool with line by turning clockwise, this won't work. You have to spin it counter-clockwise. What sort of quality control do they have at Troy-Bilt?? This may seem like a minor oversight, but something as critical as reloading the spool? Inexcusable. How very sad that a once proud American brand name that was once synonymous with quality...especially their tillers... has sunk to this level.
There could be some healthy debate about whether or not the fact that Troy-Bilt trimmers are assembled in Mexico has something to do with all these problems. But I do know that nothing with the Troy-Bilt name will enter my home again. This trimmer has just been too much trouble. But I'm too heavily invested in it to just junk it. I also have the heavy brush cutter and the pole saw attachments, so it will still get some use. Considering my old Ryobi 775r 2 cycle is still going strong after 9 years, that says a lot about their quality versus Troy-Bilt. If you watch the professional lawn care guys, nearly all of them carry Echo or Stihl, one of which will be my next weedeater. You couldn't GIVE me another Troy-Bilt.
Description of Troy-Bilt TB525 EC 17-Inch 29cc 4-Stroke Gas Powered Curve Shaft String Trimmer With Detachable ShaftFeatures 29 cc, 4-cycle engine and spring-assist starting system, and 17" cutting swath. Accepts optional attachments. Dual-line bump head with speed spool. .095" diameter line, deluxe D-handle. Fifty state/EPA compliant. Electric start capable. 2-year limited warranty. For speedspool replacement cartridge, use True Value #560-316. REVIEW:The joys of the four-cycle engine are many. First, they run on straight gas, so there's no need to prepare an oil-gas mixture. Second, they give you more torque at a greater range of speeds. Third, they run quieter than two-cycle engines and produce fewer emissions. As with most good things, however, there is also a downside: Two-cycle engines will give you more horsepower, pound for pound, than four-cycle engines (in other words, they're lighter per HP).The question, then, is whether you're willing to put up with a little more weight or sacrifice some HP in order to have a clean, quiet cut. (In some states, this decision may already have been made for you-there seems to be a trend toward mandating that two-cycle engines be retrofitted with catalytic converters.) If the answer is yes, then Troy-Bilt's 29 cc curve-shaft trimmer is a great option. At 13 pounds it's lighter than older four-cycle models, and it has a wide 17-inch cutting swath. It features "SpringAssist" starting, which means you don't have to yank on the pull-cord-a slow and steady pull will get the thing started. This trimmer is well-balanced, and the curved shaft and adjustable D-handle make for comfortable use. Like most trimmers, this one includes a bump-head line release; Troy-Bilt's "SpeedSpool" system means quick, easy line replacement. As an added bonus, it's compatible with interchangeable Troy-Bilt attachments, too. Overall, a powerful trimmer that's comfortable to use, clean, and quiet. Two-year limited warranty. For a comparable trimmer with a straight shaft, see Troy-Bilt's model #TB575SS.--Josh Dettweiler What's in the Box Trimmer with adjustable D-handle; oil included in carton
