It's overpriced if it's just another toolbag. But it's unique in the idea of storing the tools vertically, and it's very sturdily built, and it will pay for itself many times over.
I do a lot of small medium and large repair jobs. Over the past couple years, I've been trying to reorganize my tools so I could work faster. One of the things I've done is built a series of "kits" of my most used tools that I could easily carry to a job, and have most of what I would need right there without having to go back for more. The simplest kit is a leatherman juice I carry in my pocket. The next one is a small beltloop type kit for quick measurements and simple repairs. The next size kit is a portable kit with enough tools to actually do repair work.
I've been carrying this kit in a standard nylon toolbag for about a year and that worked really well. Initially I tried to keep the number of tools low, so the kit would be lightweight, but too few tools had me returning to my toolbox for more tools, so I started adding tools. That made the kit heavier but more useful, however another problem showed up: because the tools were stacked all over each other they became difficult to organize - "I know I have a pair of scissors in here somewhere"
And then I saw the Veto Pro Pac here on Amazon. I didn't buy it at first, it's pretty expensive. Then, after a particularly nasty job that required using my tools in multiple places, and having to dump them out to find the right tool nearly every time - I finally broke down and ordered the LC version Veto Pro Pac.
I got it a few weeks ago and loaded it with my tools. Interestingly my toolkit fit almost exactly into the LC, with no room to spare - it probably weighs around 30 lbs, loaded.
My first impression was that it was heavy built and will last a long time. It does indeed hold everything vertically. The handle, the shoulder strap and the base are all sturdy. I like the way the sides fold open for easy access and the shoulder strap velcros out of the way. I was able to separate the most used tools on one side and the useful, but less used on the other side.
Now, I've been using it for about three weeks, and I can attest that the vertical tool storage is the way to go. Not only can you see the tools that you need and get at them immediately, you can put them away quickly, and you can see if you're missing anything right away. In my Veto, every space is full, so if there's a gap, somethings not there. I found it very simple to memorize where the tools go. Since getting it, I've swapped out a few tools to make my toolkit even more useful.
Example use: yesterday I had a water drip under the kitchen sink. Open the Veto, and crawl under the sink. I first pulled out my flashlight - wiped the leaky pipes down to get rid of the water, and could immediately see where the leak was - simple loose valve packing - space was tight, so I pulled out a 6 inch adjustable wrench - it was just a bit too small; put it back. Pull out a big adjustable wrench, tighten packing. Problem solved. Wipe up the remaining water, put the flashlight and the large adjustable away - done.
This is a very typical repair, and with my old toolbag I would have gotten the job done just fine also - but here's where the time savings would've been. In my old bag, I could never find my flashlight - it always fell to the bottom of the bag, so I would have to dig for it for 20 or 30 seconds. The small adjustable wrench was similar so it was hard to find also - crawl out from under the sink and dig for another 30 seconds - sometimes a minute. Sometimes I would even get frustrated and dump the whole bag onto the floor, so I could find something, then of course I would have to put it all back. On this simple repair I probably saved 2-3 minutes with the Veto. I've now done many of them with this bag and that's pretty typical. Larger repairs save even more time. Is 2-3 minutes savings for a simple repair worth it? When you do 100 of them a year like I do, probably, and I'd guess easily 10 minutes on a larger repair - which I do probably 25 of a year. Do the math and that's 750 minutes per year saved - which is about 12 hours saved per year. Even at $10 per hour, it pays for itself in a year, and I can't imagine the bag won't last many years. Add in the value of not losing tools and the cost case gets even better.
If you're a pro and you do more repairs you cannot afford not to have something like this. I'm surprised every toolbag isn't made this way.
I've noticed only a couple negatives.
First there is review here which rated the bag low because the back pockets have a plastic divider that catches the tools - is correct. Tools in the back pockets can get hung up on the plastic. This is a design problem with the bag, and they should correct it. I don't think it's a fatal flaw or even a serious one, like the other reviewer.
The second is a bit of operator error - another design challenge, which I think Veto has solved, but it took me a while to see it. Both sides are functionally identical, so I kept opening the wrong side at first - then I realized the red label is only one side. After I noticed that, it's pretty easy to get the right side every time.
That's it, great bag. The only question is which size you need.
