Tools and Hardware Reviews of Multimeter DT830B 19-Range DMMCustomer Review: Spend a little more money on something else Summary: 1 Stars
I knew I was not going to get something of Fluke quality with a <$8 multimeter, but this is definitely something to watch out for.
First off the internal battery died after less than 30 seconds of having the product on. Had to remove two screws to replace the 9V battery. After doing that it has powered on, but we'll see how long it lasts. From some other reviews it appears that the battery drain on this could be pretty steep. Which would suck given how hard it is to remove a battery if you were going to leave it in a drawer for a while.
Also, there is no audible continuity tester on this despite what the manual says.
It seems that whoever is selling these are buying them from different sources and putting the same model on the label. The unit I received does not match the picture on the Amazon site. Has apparently the same features, but it's different.
Unfortunately I just needed this for basic stuff around the house and one immediate need so I paid for the overnight shipping. If it were any more money I would send it back to Amazon. But it's just not worth the time and hopefully I'll get some minimal use out of it.
If you need it for anything other than basic use of checking to see if AC or DC voltages are working then I would recommend buying something much better. Even for basic stuff I'd try something else first as there were a lot of other options within Amazon for just a few dollars more.
Customer Review: Do you feel lucky? Summary: 1 Stars
By buying this rubbish you're simply sending a message to whatever manufacturer in China is pumping these things out by the millions, that we're all so stupid that we'll buy anything they make if it's cheap enough.
These multi meters are sold under a myriad of brand names, and in several cases, from yellow, black, grey and red, with or with out a fancy rubber condom, for prices starting at a few dollars, up to $30 or $40. Yet they all have exactly the same circuit board. They are cheaply made junk, and verge on being dangerous.
They can be identified by the range scale, the three probe ports on the right side, and the hFE socket on the left. Regardless of brand or case colour, it's the same meter. The same rubbish circuit board, the same inaccurate dangerous junk. They are usually labeled 830B, which helps identify them.
You're measuring electricity, your life is worth more than this.
Customer Review: I got what I expected Summary: 4 Stars
The product is efficient for battery testing and easy to use with guides to the expected power readings of each type of battery. I bought this one in particular for the load feature as it is supposed to eliminate readings for dead batteries. Just yesterday I had a rechargeable battery that I didnt realize was one when I tested it since I needed it fast and it gave me a pretty good reading (not the best but high enough). As soon as I began using it the battery had zero power so the load feature isnt that great or it may have been the way rechargeables discharge and I havent tried to figure out how reliable this feature is yet on regular batteries. Other than this one hiccup, this product has been a good value for the price and has many more features I probably wont use since I didnt buy it for them.
Customer Review: Electrical Engineering Degree Needed Summary: 2 Stars
So I just needed this to test some basic batteries around the house, nothing fancy or complicated. Just your standard AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt. I'd read reviews of other competing products and learned that it's better to us a load-tester and this is supposed to cover that base. But apparently this product was not made for people like me without an Electrical Engineering degree. The directions are way over my head and speak nothing of basic battery testing....at least not in layman's English. So while the general consumer level products out there that focus on battery testing might not load-test them, at least they're simpler to use, so now I have to go buy one of those....or enroll in my local votech school for an electrician's course.
Customer Review: Perfect pocket multimeter Summary: 5 Stars
As someone who only occasionally needs the services that a multimeter can provide, this is the perfect device. It's small, easy to store, accurate, and durable.
The unit I received looks much better than the one in the picture. It has a yellow plastic construction, comes with the black/red probes, and includes a 9V battery.
And although it is lightweight, it doesn't seem fragile at all. In fact, it seems very durable.
The instructions are marginally useful at best, but that's not really important since it performs to my expectations. And the price can't be beat. Definitely a handy device to have around the house.
