Tools and Hardware Reviews of Ventamatic CX1500 Power Gable Ventilator FanCustomer Review: Extra thermostat may not be needed Summary: 5 Stars
Just an FYI to future users that the Ventamatic gable fan comes with its own thermostat. The extra thermostat/humidistat, that the majority of people buy with the fan, is possibly not needed for every user. We bought the fan for use in our new garage. Wish we hadn't ordered the extra thermostat; it just was not necessary for this application. (IF I had READ the description of the fan, I would have known all of this, but I was in a hurry. Sigh.)
Also, we went to Home Depot and bought a shutter vent, since the one on this site is so badly rated. But since we were doing new construction, the carpenter on the job sent us back to Menards to buy an alternative. The Home Depot vent was flat and would have required a lot of caulking around the edges. It was for use on existing structures when you have to cut a hole in the wall. The vent we got at Menards had a flange around it, and it sunk right into the wall so that the new siding could be placed right up to the edge of the vent, between the vent and the flange. It's a much nicer finish and no caulk needed.
So beware when you see all those items listed as being bought together on the Amazon site.
Customer Review: Easy install and seems to be good quality Summary: 5 Stars
It's only been in the attic for about a week or so so I don't have a report on longevity yet. Installation was extremely easy and the fan seems to be very good quality. We just bolted it to a 3/8" plywood board with a circle cut out that we put up to cover the existing gable vent. We used some heavy duty weather stripping around where the board made contact with the existing studs just to prevent as much vibration as possible from transferring into the wall to cut down on noise. Fan is very quiet and stable so this may not have been necessary. Total time to install was about 4 hours including running a branch electric line to it. I have had a thermometer up there with it for a week and the thermostat seems to turn it on and off almost exactly where I have it set to (right now I'm testing out the recommended 100 degree F on point and 85 degree F off point.) It just started getting hot here in Washington, DC this weekend and I think it has already made a big difference (though I can't prove anything because I haven't done a controlled on/off study yet.) Overall I definitely recommend.
Customer Review: Ventilator Fan Review Summary: 4 Stars
I was told by a Heating and Air Conditioning Co. that the thermostat switch on my old ventilator fan was bad. I asked them to replace the switch when they replaced my outside compressor unit that was struck by lightning. I thought they had done this when I paid the bill but later found out it wasn't done. They had taken the old thermostat switch out and left it in the attic, which is where I found it. I then went to a local hardware store and purchased another thermostat switch and installed it myself. The unit still didn't work so on further testing discovered the motor was bad and the old thermostat switch was good. Took new switch back to store and got a refund. Found out I could buy the whole unit, with new motor, switch including cowl for less than I could buy a new motor. Took the motor and new switch out of new cowl and put in existing cowl already installed, hooked it up, which took about 25 minutes, and it works perfectly. Probably saved $100.00 by doing this myself. Thank you AMAZON!!!!!!!
Customer Review: Excellent value - Very quiet - Sturdy - Easy Summary: 5 Stars
I was not sure how good this product would be. I ordered. With shipping under fifty bucks total. As I had been looking inside the big warehouse stores for a attic fan and for anythjing decent two hundred bucks was the starting point! I purchased this item about three weeks ago installed myself under two hours and am a total klutz with household repairs. Very easy instructions and less wiring than a standard old table lamp. Great built in thermostatic control seems very accurate so far, so good. The biggest bonus was our attic temp dropped twenty degrees during the day. At night fan shut off by 5:00 PM everyday leaving the attic at or below seventy five degrees. Did I mention we live in the Mojave Desert in some of the hottest weather conditions in the entire United States!! I highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to lower their attic temperatures.
Thank you, James W.
Customer Review: Ventamatic does the job. Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased two of the Ventamatic CX1500's one for each end of the attic. The price is right and they were shipped quickly. I wired them to work either on auto temp control or manual override. I can turn them both on and they operate as an inexpensive whole house fan moving lots of air out of the attic through door to the attic which cools the upstairs- provided there is cool air outside to pull in through the windows. They are made well enough. I used some 5/8" plywood and 2x6's to create a strong mounting frame that goes between the house wall studs over the gable vents and makes an air tight seal. I wouldn't recommend mounting these directly to the house because the frame and mount brackets are not stiff enough and you wouldn't get a good enough seal over a rectangular vent. They operate quietly with minimal vibration.
