Tools and Hardware Reviews of Vornado 542B Whole-Room Vortex-Action Air Circulator with Heavy-Duty V-Grip Clip and Base, BlackCustomer Review: Awesome fan Summary: 5 Stars
I was deployed to Afghanistan for parts of the summer time. Since I was working on night shift, sleeping during the hot summer day was very difficult. I attached this at the end of my bed and I slept like a baby. This thing has a very powerful but quiet motor. It sounds loud if you are right next to it, but a few feet away and you can't hear anything. I like this model because it has a base you can clip the fan to and place it on a table or desk. The materials also feel very durable and the clamp has some really good gripping power. The joints on it allows it to be adjusted to virtually any angle you would like. I did have a little problem when I had mounted it upside down. At some angles the weight of the fan would force it to point down.
I wouldn't recommend using this at your desk if you have papers on it. Thing has two settings, high and low. On low it is strong enough to blow most of your papers away. If you happen to work in a hot stuffy office, then place this a little bit further away from you than you would a normal fan. You could also have fun with this in your office. Just turn it on high and aim it someone's desk you don't like and watch the paper scatter.
Customer Review: Heavy duty clip Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this fan to specifically clip to my treadmill. I'm not particularly impressed that it doesn't have a middle speed -- it's either low or REALLY high. But what does impress me is the industrial clip. I can attach this fan to my treadmill bar (which is round and almost 2 inches thick) and it holds like a rock. It has to be one of the most ingenious designs for a clip fan out there. It looks like a regular clamp, but the bottom half is actually on a hinge, so you can attach it to metal tubing or anything else that's not perfectly flat. For this reason alone, I really like the fan and will keep it. As others have mentioned, the high speed is rather loud and will blow your socks off. But the low speed is extremely quite and works well if you're right next to the fan. If you need a clip fan for something that is not the standard shape, this should work well for you. FYI, I contacted Vornado and they said that both clip models are being discontinued. I'm glad I snatched one up before they are completely gone.
Customer Review: Okay, but not the usual Vornado power Summary: 3 Stars
I read all the reviews before I bought this fan. I have nothing BUT Vormados throughout the house and use them year round, in winter to distribute heat from the wood stove on stone cold days. The other reviews pointed out this fan's flaws, but I was looking for a clip-on for the kitchen which tends to be a hot spot in summer. In the kitchen I prefer to keep a fan above floor level so as not to blow pet hairs around.
On low the fan just barely moves the air, and on high it truly is a noisy thing. Stick with any of the other Vornados if you want to purchase one for your bedroom. If it weren't for the clip I might have returned it, but that clip holds on tight, so I kept it.
Customer Review: Nice fan, great warranty service Summary: 3 Stars
I bought a couple of these fans (for those who care, they are made in China). One didn't work but Vornado's warranty service was excellent. I wish this fan had a middle speed, but for my use, the low speed works great and is reasonably quiet. It has a nice breeze but the air stream seems quite directional so I have to have it pointed well to where I want the breeze to go. The clip is nice and strong and the base that you can clip the fan to is nice as well.
UPDATE: 2010-08-27 - Another one failed. Again, Vornado's warranty service was EXCELLENT and they sent me an updated model. Changing to 3 stars because of failures of this model, but A++ for their warranty service.
Customer Review: Performance does not equal price Summary: 2 Stars
This fan does not perform how I would expect a 45.00 fan to perform
The main problem is that the low setting is much too low and does not move much air, and the high setting makes too much noise to be useful.
I took some reading using my disable meter so that you can make some comparisons my meter is accurate with a +/- of 2% and has a range of 30db-130db
Base reading 10 feet from fan 90 degrees from the direction of the air flow was 35 db
Fan on low setting 10 feet from fan 90 degrees from direction of air flow 42db
Fan on high setting 10 feet from fan 90 degrees from direction of air flow 61db
