Tools and Hardware Reviews of Vornado FA1-0007-06 Zippi Desk Fan, Black

Customer Review: Great desk fan for personal use.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm quite pleased. This is a nice personal fan with good function and with just enough style that I thought the price was reasonable. My impression is its a pleasing moderate design made to be safe and to move a fairly reasonable amount of air for a single person sitting at a desk. I got black, its nice and stylish yet doesn't necessarily stand out. When I hold it its nice and sturdy. It doesn't feel cheap. As for function, on low the "sweet" spot for me seems to be about 2 feet away. I get a mild breeze. I can switch to high when I need more. The soft cloth fins don't hurt a bit if you accidently bump into them which I often do as I dock or undock my laptop. Its generated plenty of interest in my office building. My neighbors have all commented how nice it is compared to their desk fans. As far as noise, the low setting is barely a whisper. The high setting is reasonable for the air it moves. I wish it had a medium setting, but for the price its a minor quibble. I am pleased it doesn't make that annoying high-pitched whirr noise I hear from my neighbors' fans. I've heard several times that it seems like a really great desk fan. And it is.

Customer Review: Nifty fan -- one issue
Summary: 4 Stars

EDIT/UPDATE: After one year of occasional use, the fan developed a terribly loud bearing noise. Had to throw it away. Can't readjust my original 4-star rating, but if I could I wouldn't give it the same good rating.

Cool little fan. I find it to quietly provide enough airflow to cool me in my cubicle. Don't expect it to do more than that as it simply isn't designed for it -- besides, I don't want my paperwork blown all over the place anyway. The fabric blades are nice, and necessary, as there isn't a grill protecting one from the blades. Already had one person accidentally touch the spinning blades with no ill effect to person or fan.

Having said this, I did have one issue that might be a safety concern -- the retaining clip that holds the fan head/blade assembly on the motor shaft isn't exactly the strongest. I tried to put the fan on top of my cubicle pointing down and the comibination of gravity and centrifugal force caused the head to come off and fly down at me like a damaged helicopter. Best bet is to leave the fan somewhere where it can be pointed level or up . . .

Customer Review: It has flaws.
Summary: 3 Stars

I love the way this thing looks and is designed. In fact, I'm returning the one I got for another because I'm hoping I got a bum one.

Problems were, as an area fan, this is pathetic. Although, since I never intended this to replace my 20" box fan with the Zippi, this could easily overlooked for me. My issue was with the quality of the fan.
1. The front fin housing scrapes and rattles at the lower speed setting.
2. There is a motor whine that is audible in a quite room and can become grating after a while.
3. High speed setting is not exactly what I call silent, but if the slow setting wasn't louder in other ways (explained above) I'd never use this setting.

4. is a complaint against Amazon. They sent my unit directly from a refurbish center. First time I've seen this happen. I didn't pay a mind until the unit came faulty. So much for Amazon being a better retailer than other merchants on their system. Shame.

Positive? Return policy is great as always.

Customer Review: Great for small office & child safe
Summary: 5 Stars

This little fan is great for a small office where you want a gentle breeze that will not send your papers flying. Just enough to circulate air in a stuffy room with no windows.

I love the fabric blades!! They are so cool! You can touch the blades while they are spinning and you barely feel a tap. I learned this by experience, as the fan turns off in the back and I did not give enough clearance for my hand. This is a great fan for a child safe environment. By the way, the picture is deceiving: the blades flop down when not in use--not sticking out as shown in photo. I had been confused looking a the photo about how blades could be fabric and not have some sort of wire in it.

As for those negative reviews about the motor breaking down-- I Left mine running all day and over a weekend and is still working like new and I have had mine for months with no problems.

Also, this fan is VERY quiet so don't forget to turn it off at end of day!

Customer Review: Not the most powerful but....
Summary: 5 Stars

the tradeoffs are more than worth it. The fan is plenty powerful for what it's meant for. It doesn't blow dust or paperwork around the office. In addition, we bought extras to keep computer equipment cool. You read right. Desktop equipment (I'm a techie) wasn't getting enough circulation thanks to space limitations in our IT dept't office setup but these babies are doing the job so well we aren't having to put up with loud fans nor do we worry about accidentally hitting the blades since they are all around and space is at a premium. Aesthetically, they work as we are in an office that calls for a certain level of style. We're happy. (BTW, we aren't cooling servers or anything so don't get any silly ideas about replacing major cooling systems in server rooms... I'm talking about stacked external hard drives that ppl leave on all all night, overheating laptops, and anything else where extra air circulation helps the lifespan of the equipment in question...)
