Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King 9980 Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Operation Waste DisposerCustomer Review: Great addition to our new home Summary: 5 Stars
We just got into our new home and the old Badger 5 was showing signs of very near death and it was leaking a lot. I spent a lot of research on garbage disposals and Waste King seemed far superior and at the price Amazon offers it, it was an easy decision.
EZ vs 3Bolt - I debated that for quite a while. I ended up getting the 3 bolt thinking it will make the Badger swap easier, turned out I the old sink ring was rusty, falling apart and ... well just old. Replacing the new mount was not hard, accounting that I have no plumbing experience. I don't know how much easier the EZ mount is but the 3 bolt seemed a good balance between simple, sturdy and long-lasting.
The unit itself was a pretty close drop-in replacement of the Badger. All the pipes and connectors were about at the same spot and I did not have to change any of the existing plumbing. I did not need any extra parts, just some plumber's putty - which I forgot and had to run out and get. I do recommend reading the instructions first, especially for new DIYs like me, there are some useful tips there (to use soap to lubricate the ring on installation - genius) and a good step by step guide that will keep you on track.
The 9980 is definitely a bit longer but did fit very nicely, our sink seems quite average so I suspect most will be fine. The 1 hp is the first obvious feature, I decided to turn it on before I mounted it - just to make sure electrically and mechanically all worked and the unit almost jumped out of my hands. If you decide to do that - get a solid grip. With all that power - it seems like it would shred through anything.
As far as noise, it does start with a rather loud clank (I've read that in some of the other reviews) but then it goes into a powerful low humming. It can definitely be heard but I do not find it a problem - again this is the most powerful unit available.
So far I am really happy with the purchase, buying experience from Amazon is impeccable. Installation was not quick but smooth, my lack of experience but strive for meticulousness resulted in a job well done, pride of ownership and a garbage disposal fit for a king. Can't find a better job than the one done with care and yourself.
Customer Review: Probably better than "EZ Mount" for reason in review Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the 1HP 9980. The "splash guard" contains a larger opening compared to the EZ Mount model. I know this because the 9980 comes with the removable EZ Mount model's splash guard which is useless for the 9980. I have no idea why they include it, but it's in the same plastic bag as a couple of other parts. I can put my hand through the 9980's splash guard, but not the EZ Mount one. It doesn't even fit in the sink opening for the 9980. I saw some complaints on the EZ mount model about the size of the opening which is why I mention this.
I replaced a 7.5 year old Badger 5. It is definitely quieter, but I first put some liquid dishwasher soap down the drain prior to running it. Some people have mentioned a noise issue, so you may want to try this idea.
Overall, the unit has been functioning great. No vibration of the sink like some have mentioned with the EZ mount model. I can definitely tell a significant improvement in the time it takes to grind up things like chicken bones. Also, I used to have an issue with steak bones getting stuck in the Badger 5. No issue with the Waste King.
The EZ Mount instructions state that plumber's putty isn't needed for Stainless steel sinks. The 9980 3-bolt mounting instructions do not. I'm not sure if the putty is necessary or not, but I went ahead and spent the $2 just in case. No leaks, and everything works great.
I don't see how the "EZ Mount" could be any easier. It only took me about 20 minutes to install the unit, AFTER reading all instructions and practicing the assembly of the parts. My home is 7.5 years old (same as old Badger) and PVC under sink is all connected with hand adjustable fittings. My guess is most newer homes have the same type of plumbing. The only tool I needed to complete this installation was a flat head screwdriver.
Customer Review: Waste King and Amazon' s "no return policy" Summary: 1 Stars
How I was screwed by Waste King Direct with the help of Amazon's Guarantee A to Z department
I bought a Waste King 9980 Legend Series 1 HP disposal from "Waste King Direct" through Amazon last December. I had my Handy Man install it. It made a lot of noise. My wife, myself, and my handyman agreed it was too noisy. I immediately bought a competitive brand (InSinkErator)at Home Depot which was much quieter, and installed it. I never used the Waste King Disposal and tried to return it for credit. One of their people in Waste King's service department was quiet nasty over the phone even told me that InSinkErator does not make a 1 HP disposal.
Later, by e-mail "Waste King Direct" told me that their product was nonreturnable once it was install - even when I did not use it. I told them I did not run product through it. I installed it, turned it on, and immediately removed it and put it back in the box that it was shipped in. When I called the manufacturer "Waste King", they said I had to deal with "Waste King Direct".
After getting no satisfaction from Waste King Direct, I contacted Amazon's Guarantee A to Z department. They said
they had checked with Waste King - their policy was I could not return it, Amazon could do nothing for me, and my case was closed. When I tried to reply to Amazon to tell them why I thought Waste King return policy was wrong, I found that I could not reply to Amazon's decision because Amazon had blocked any return answer to their email.
Customer Review: Well-made garbage disposal, lifetime warranty, great price! Summary: 5 Stars
The Waste King 9980 is very similar to the Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Operation Waste Disposer. The main difference is that the 9980 is mounted using the standard 3-bolt method, whereas the L-8000 uses their "EZ" mounting. If your existing mount is the 3-bolt, I recommend getting the 9980 as installation will be quicker. Just remove your old unit and slide the new one over the existing flange hardware - don't forget to lubricate. I'm not familiar with the EZ system, but I doubt it could possibly be EZ-er than this. Besides, the 3-bolt mount looks to be more solid and is constructed from steel, not plastic.
Operation is no louder or quieter than my old 1/2 HP Insinkerator Badger piece of junk. The Waste King efficiently chops up anything you throw in it. It just plain works well. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BUY A BADGER. There are countless reviews on Amazon and elsewhere that describe how prone to failure they are. Both Waste King 9980 and L-8000 are of stainless steel construction. My Badger cracked, leaked, rusted and basically disintegrated after just a few years. Waste King products appear to be of superior construction and come with a limited lifetime in-home warranty. It's really a no-brainer.
Bottom line: You can't go wrong with the Waste King 9980 or L-8000.
Customer Review: Great Disposal--easy install Summary: 5 Stars
We had an 1/3 hp insinkerator badger and the grinding chamber actually cracked and split. So, off to shopping--came across this unit and wanted to try a different company's machine. The price was right for the size of the unit. I took this out of the box, reviewed the install and completed the project in less than 45 minutes. The unit looks great and fit perfectly where the badger was. Of interest, the 9980 comes with a 90 degree elbow out of the side of the machine to hook to the waste line. On a double sink, this wouldn't work. So I used the tail from the badger which was a straight pipe and discarded the elbow. The unit then fit right into place--picture perfect. It seems to me on the height and hookup, the measurements were exact to that of the insinkerator badger. So the hardest part of the install was removing the old unit which was seemingly extremely tight in place--that took the majority of the time. Of other interest, when you go to fit the collar to the unit, make sure you use soft soap as it suggests--the unit popped right into place with no struggle. Also, the instruction says on a stainless sink to not use plumber's putty but to use the rubber gasket--did and no leaks.
