Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-1001 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Waste Disposer

Customer Review: Eat my junk!
Summary: 5 Stars

Had to replace my leaking In-Sinkerator that was 10 years old (so no bad feelings there), and I just wanted to get something that would do the same job, not cost a lot, maybe try a new brand for the heck of it, and take less space under my sink if possible.

The WasteKing 1001 fit the bill on all accounts. And the BEST PART - I installed it in 1 hour. I just loved their EZ thing to do the sink-flange part. Taking out the old In-Sinkerator took just as much time as it took to put this puppy in. The only 'inconvenience' was having to duck down to the local Home Cheapo to get a longer discharge pipe. Others have complained about the fact that you need plumber putty to do the sink flange, and they are right - it would not have cost WasteKing much to throw that in, but being a weekend warrior I had the putty (as well as lots of other plumbing stuff) so there was no problemo there - and for $64 you can't find a better deal. I also love the fact that this disposal has the reset button on the front so one does NOT have to go fiddling around to find it on the bottom of the InSinkerators - nor is there some funky tool to 'unclog it'...must mean this baby really doesn't need an unclogging tool, and unless you are shoving body parts down this I wouldn't think it ever would (the model up would probably do well for you serial killers reading this...just kidding!!!)

Bottom line - the price is great, it is quieter than my old InSinkerator 'Badger 5', and it's a breeze to install. No screwing around with electrical (as long as you have an outlet handy - if your old one was 'hard wired' it will be more difficult). If you have any handyman skills at all, get this to replace what you have unless you have some serious garbage disposal requirements. I understand the next model up (2600) gives you an even better warranty and it is quieter (which I almost bought, actually), but I took a chance and was pleased at the noise level for the cheaper one. Grind on, mates!!

Customer Review: The impostor is dead! Long live the King!
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the previous owners of our house installed a hardware chain store's house brand 1/3 horsepower food waste disposer but left the IN-SINK-ERATOR drain flange in place. We had been doing the dishes with the help of an impostor, and not a very good one. When it came time to replace it, we ordered up this one and my building inspector brother-in-law was happy to put it in, insisting that we install the new WASTE KING drain flange so the world would know we made a good choice.

True to everyone else's experience, removing the old 3-bolt mount unit took more time and effort than installing the Waste King. Once it was in, we treated it to its first meal: chicken bones from Popeyes. Though it lacks the sound shielding of its costlier siblings, the Waste King L-1001 purrs quietly enough to let you carry on a conversation and the grinding noise is just loud enough to let you know it's doing the job. You can also hear the higher RPMs (2,600 versus 1,800 or so).

If you buy a Waste King, don't be alarmed by the loud CLICK! when you switch it on (If you're an ancient IT pro, it'll remind you of the loud startup click emitted by certain early hard disk drives). According to the documentation, it's the anti-jam swivel impellers swinging into place. If it sounds like it's laboring, it's really raising the torque to handle tougher food waste. Our maiden voyage confirmed that. It plowed through the bones, a few at a time, in a couple minutes and then resumed its quiet throaty tone to let us know the job was done.

Customer Review: Better than expected
Summary: 5 Stars

I replaced my old In-Sink-Erator (Badger 1 Model) with the Water King L-1001. My Badger 1 was very old and still worked fine until the top rotted through. The motor was still working fine. I was hunting the internet for the best price (with shipping) for another Badger 1. What the heck, it had a good long life. I stumbled across two different Garbage Disposal review sites. Am I glad I did !!! This site and LOWEs review site shot the Badger 1 and the Badger 5 down....I MEAN BADLY !!!.....

Anyway, this site and the LOWEs site recommended buying the Anaheim 3101 Adapter Kit if I had a 3 bolt mounting system which is what In-Sink-Erator uses. Well I did have the 3 bolt mount, but I ripped all of that out (with the old disposal) and used the new EZ Mount system that came with the new Waste King L-1001.

I'm not sure why everyone is pushing the adapter kit. Everything you need comes with the L-1001. It's installed, it lined up exactly the same as the old disposal, and works fine without having to buy anything extra.

Customer Review: Exceeded my expectations
Summary: 5 Stars

I a very impressed with this disposal! It works great and is quieter than any I've used before, and this isn't even supposed to be a quiet unit. I guess I'm just used to noisy disposals. I really wouldn't want it much quieter because then it wouldn't be as obvious that it is running. I think it is important for safety reasons that it makes an obvious grinding sound that says "Something happening down here, keep you fingers away!". The small size is nice too. The outlet is just 6.25 inches below the sink, which allowed me to reuse my existing plumbing even though I changed to a deeper sink. It is really hard to believe that 64.00 buys so much product here. I can not imagine why some other units cost 3-4 times this price. I guess you can grind up much bigger stuff with them. I have no interest in that. I have a septic system and therefore keep disposal activity to a minimum. My main interest is using it to avoid unclogging my drain by hand every time I do the dishes.

Customer Review: Horrible DIsposal... positive reviews must have been written by people whoe don't do the dishes.
Summary: 1 Stars

My husband purchased this disposal based on all the positive reviews he read here on Amazon. Clearly the people who wrote those reviews aren't the ones doing the dishes in their homes, this product is horrible. The last disposal we owned was a cheap-o with mediocre reviews so I was excited (well, as excited as one can be about a garbage disposal) to have a new one. This disposal is the worst thing to ever happen to my kitchen. It is quiet, but the sink flange is so small and the splash guard so stiff that I have to shove the food down the splash guard to get the sink to drain. I don't mean just large pieces of food get stuck, all sizes of food. So if I have a sink full of dishes and something as small as a handful of peas get stuck the entire sink backs up with water. The garbage disposal only works once the food is shoved down. My old disposal would suck almost everything through the splash guard opening when turned on. Very disappointed to say the least!
