This was my first disposal installation. The online video was much better than written instruction booklet. Check Waste King's website for it. My old disposal was hard-wired. My mistake was trying to remove included cable to hard-wire the new disposal. It was impossible to get the power cable out of rubber stopper after I had dismantled it from unit.. I should have cut the cable and pigtailed it to house power inside a junction box under sink. Instead, I needed to get a strain relief connector to add to unit (parts only cost $3-4, already had plumber's putty). Wiring and plumbing were the most basic possible.
Disposer worked right away. It is quieter than old unit. I would buy this unit again without hesitation especially considering the 5-yr in-home warranty.

I just replaced my Insinkerator Badger 1 1/3 HP disposer with this Waste King. The Waste King is a far superior machine and cheaper to boot. It took me 2 hours to remove the awful Badger that had sprung a leak. How a supposedly metal bucket can spring a leak is beyond me, unless Insinkerator lies. Anyway once the awful Badger was removed, it was just a couple of twists and the Waste King was properly installed. The difference in difficulty was shocking. For everything I have good to say about the installation of the Waste King, I have something equally awful to say about the Badger.
Also, if you are going to do this yourself, put lots of plumbers putty on the sink. It's easy to remove, but dangerous if you don't put enough on.

I bought this to replace a 10 year old whirlaway 191. That unit is made by the same manufacturer and is by all appearances identical to this unit (though this one is rated at 1/2hp instead of 1/3hp for the whirlaway).
Because the products have identical dimensions, replacement was a snap. I spent about 20 minutes total removing the old and installing the new units. I don't see how it could be any easier. I am not a skillful plumber. I'm not skilled in any mechanical arts. But it was almost a snap-in replacement.
Make sure to have plumber's putty on hand as that is required in a couple of steps.
I'll be thrilled if this one lasts me 10 years like the last one!

Our kitchen sink is extra deep, so having the compact waste disposer has been really nice. My husband installed it pretty easily. It is quieter, but I can tell when it's on (which I like). Everything we've put down so far has gotten taken care of quickly. The mouth where food goes down into the disposer is really small, so we have to push the food down most of the time, but it seems to do a better job of keeping things out that are not supposed to fall in (such as small measuring spoons). Of course, if things did get down there, neither my husband nor I could fit our hands through to get them out, but I'm hoping a set of tongs will suffice if we ever need to do that. I have no complaints whatsoever!Customer Review: Disposal replacement

Late on Thanksgiving day after having our family including children,grand children & Great Grand Children (15 people in all)
Our garbage disposal gave up.
Later that evening I looked for a new one and found the Waste King L-1001 that had the EZ hookup and all the
other connections that I would need when installing it.
It is much more quite than the one I replaced and has plenty of strenght to do the job. It was shipped very
quickly and arrived before I had time to install it.
I installed it on 12/02/10 in about 1.5 Hours, years ago this would have been a one hour job from start to the
finish of clean up. (I'm in my early 80's)
