Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-2600 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Waste DisposerCustomer Review: THE ONE TO BUY! Summary: 5 Stars
First, let me say that I am by no means a handyman. What takes some other guy an hour to do, it takes me at least three. That being said, after reading all the great reviews about this garbage disposal, I bought it and was able to replace my old, leaking ISO Badger. The Badger lasted about 8 years but developed a crack in its housing and was leaking some putrid stuff under my kitchen sink. It took me awhile to notice the leak (again, I ain't a handyman). It DID take me nearly three hours to complete the change-out. I actually spent more time removing my old unit (that had the 3-bolt system) than it did to install the new Waste-King. A side note: If you're you've got a 3-bolt disposal and are replacing it, don't hesitate to get the newer EZ-mount system. You'll appreciate it when it comes time to replace the disposal in (hopefully many) years to come. After reading the instructions that came with the Waste-King, and also viewing the videos on their website, I tackled the project. (Oh yeah, I did have to send the wife out shopping since I don't like any audience when it comes to my repairs.) I didn't really like having the dog watching me, but at least he can't laugh out loud. During the installation I did have to modify some of the plastic pipes but the originals were so disgusting that I was glad I did so. I like that the Waste-King's splash guard is removable so when it gets gross you can remove and clean it. Can't do that with the 3-bolt system. Also liked that the disposal came with the power cord, so, other than plumber's putty to use around the sink flange, I didn't have to buy anything else. Amazon's price (and free shipping) was, as usual, the best deal around. The disposal comes with a great in-home warranty which I don't expect to have to use. The 1/2 hp was an upgrade from my 1/3hp unit and it's fairly quiet. Remarkably (for me) after I completed the project, it worked! No leaks! Of course, it did cost me about $300 to have my wife go shopping, but at least I didn't have to call a plumber!
Customer Review: Great product, same fittings as ISE, easy install, recommended! Summary: 5 Stars
I replaced my InSinkErator (ISE) Badger 5 which started leaking after only a few years and was already out of warranty. I read a lot of generally negative reviews of ISE products so when I ran across this model and read the positive feedback I decided to give it a try and I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
For what I paid ($75) the Waste King L-2600 came with everything I needed to replace my ISE in the box with the exception of plumber's putty which you must use if your sink is not stainless steel but this is reasonable. I have a non-stainless steel sink so I could not use the included rubber gasket but putty works just as well maybe adds an extra 5 minutes to installation. It also comes with a 3-prong cord which will plug into any outlet no fancy wiring needed which saved me time. Compare that to the ISE Badger 5 which costs more and they charge an extra $10 on top of that to get the 3-prong adapter kit so the Waste King was a better deal for me.
I removed my old ISE and replaced it with this one on a Saturday afternoon with time to spare. Included instructions are adequate but be sure to read all the steps, especially if you have a dishwasher since you need to punch out the plug BEFORE you install the unit. This was my first time replacing a garbage disposal and I can attest to the ease of installation.
As with other reviewers I found the unit to be quiet, fast, maybe too quiet. I'm so use to the loud roar of the ISE that the quiet buzz of this unit may make you think it's not working on but rest assured it works fine and handles everything we throw at it within reason. Also a 5 year in home warranty beats the competition as well.
The only negative I can think of is that this unit is made in China while the ISE is made in the USA. As much as I would like to support ISE their shoddy quality and cheap warranty were deal breakers for me. I highly recommend the Waste King L-2600.
Customer Review: works great so far and was pretty easy to install Summary: 4 Stars
Like the other reviewer I replaced an older one with this. The trick is that older garbage disposals tend to have something called a three-point attachment just under the sink, while newer ones like this have a new design that rotates on. Now if you want to replace the current part that's in the sink this doesn't matter. But then you need the plumber's putty like the other reviewer said (unless it's a stainless steel sink, whose smooth surface apparently doesn't leak).
On the other hand you can do what I did and buy an adapter. This mounted under the sink, allowing me to keep the part you see in the sink when you look down, and thereby obviating the need for applying plumber's putty. It cost about $15 at Orchard Supply, but I'm sure you can get one from Amazon. It bolted to the sink part easily, and the Waste King rotated onto the adapter equally easily.
The only problem was that the adapter lowered the garbage disposal itself half an inch or so. I wound up going to Home Depot and rummaging around in their disordered bins until I found the pieces of piping I needed. It was a snap to install them once I got home, though. Plastic piping has become so standard, and works so well, it's hard to remember the old days when you needed plumber's putty for everything.
Now the installation under the sink looks professional, I've upgraded from a 1/3 to a 1/2 hp. motor, it's quieter (and mostly plastic, as the other reviewer said). This came with a 5 year warranty, and if I'd bought a more expensive Waste King I could have gotten a one-owner lifetime warranty. But this seemed good enough. And it was a much longer warranty than the comparable Kenmore unit.
It also came with a power cord built in. Didn't have to wire up anything.
I'd say, in general, that plumbing has become much easier for do-it-yourselfers. So if you're hesitating, I recommend going for it.
Customer Review: Excellent Replacement For a Broken Badger 5 Summary: 5 Stars
My first Badger 5 unit stopped working after about 7 years. It started out great, but became very unreliable over time before it stopped working completely. My second Badger 5 unit lasted only about 1 year because I dropped a shot glass inside and destroyed the motor. Rather than try my luck again with Badger, I bought the Waste King because of the glowing reviews. I made an excellent choice.
Installation is pretty straight forward. First, I decided to remove the 3-screw mount from the sink in favor of the Waste King's easy mount system. If not, I would have purchased the adapter kit. I recommend you save yourself the ~$10 and just remove your old 3-screw mount. Removing the old mount is easy; A few twist and turns, remove the old plumber's putty, done. Installing the easy mount does NOT require plumber's putty because it uses a rubber gasket instead. Very Easy.
I was very happy that the unit lined up exactly the way my old Badger 5 did; My drain pipe and dishwasher outlet all lined up and fit exactly as they did before. Thank you Waste King or whoever standardized this because it saved me a huge headache! As an added bonus the Waste King is far smaller, and lighter than the Badger unit making it very easy to install by yourself. Also, having a reset switch on the FRONT of the unit makes 1000x more sense than where the people at Badger put it.
If you used a Badger in the past you will be pleased to hear the difference when you turn on the Waste King. The unit is very quiet. Another feature that I really enjoy is how the Waste King does not easily allow items to fall into the trap. I destroyed my second Badger unit when I accidentally dropped a shot glass into it. It would be much harder to accidentally drop something into the Waste King's trap.
I highly recommend this unit.
Customer Review: Easy installation, smooth performance Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the 2600 after my 14 year old 1/3 hp GE Disposall's grinding turntable corroded and broke in half. Running a fast spinning unbalanced grindplate would have been suicidal so one of my criteria for a new disposal was corrosion-PROOF parts. Whereas the Waste King 1001's grinding parts are galvanized steel, the 2600's parts are made of stainless steel which justifies the (slightly) higher price and the lifetime warranty.
Installation was plug and play since I was replacing an existing disposal. Removal of the old disposal's seized flange was the most problematic of the steps and is not Waste King's fault. I didn't even need plumber's putty as Waste King supplied a rubber gasket for my stainless steel sink. It was a simple matter to clean the sink, install the EZ-Mount sink flange, install the drainage elbow, connect the dishwasher drainage, attach the 2600 to the EZ-Mount, adjust the orientation of the disposal to line up with the u-trap, and tighten everything in. Aside from a chopstick and hammer to knock out the dishwasher drain plug, nothing else was needed except a flathead screwdriver, some telfon tape, a smidge of Vasoline, and a bucket and paper towels. The 2600 came already equipped with a grounded electrical cable attached and I just plugged it into the same outlet that the GE used.
Unsurprisingly, the 2600 has less vibration and less noise than the old GE unit. It comes with a stopper and splash guard and the stopper has a silicone-like ring for decent seals.
Anaheim Manufacturing has a website with plenty of instructions, FAQs, and parts details which helped me figure out whether to buy any accessories. And there's an installation video for folks like me. I didn't need to use the toll free support number but it was nice to know it was there.
