Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste DisposerCustomer Review: Best Christmas Present Ever! Summary: 5 Stars
I received the Waste King L-8000 disposal for a Christmas present this year. I had asked for it for two years in a row and my father-in-law finally took me seriously and bought it for me. It is probably my favorite gift I received. I live in a fairly new "spec" home that has a lot of "builder grade" materials. This included the wimpy, loud, next to worthless 1/3 hp badger disposal that came with the house.
I do the dishes for the house and would constantly have to make sure nothing even remotely solid was put in the sink and was constantly fishing stuff out of the disposer that it just couldn't handle. I received this disposer and it is a night and day difference.
First, the install. The hardest part was getting the old disposer out. I estimated 20 minutes for the total job (taking the old one out and putting the new one in) but it ended up taking 30 minutes because the old disposal was a little harder to get out than I expected. It was a 3-bolt mount kind and I basically had to unplug it, disconnect it from the dishwasher and drain, loosen the locking ring around the neck under the sink (the hardest part, as a tip, if yours has tubular "ears" to push to get it loose, stick a screwdriver in one and hammer it. It is the easiest way to get it loose). I then just had to undo the 3 bolts and it came out quickly from there. The Waste King was a dream to install. No plumbers putty needed, just review the assembly order, twist a few parts together and plug it in. I did have to cut the drain pipe that came with the waste king a little with a hacksaw, but that was pretty easy and expected. Also, be sure to knock out the dishwasher drain plug if you are hooking it up to a dishwasher. My favorite part of the instructions was that you could just leave the plug in the disposer and it would take care of it plug if you wanted.
Now, on to usage. This thing is great. It has chewed up everything I have thrown at it. If I let a stream of water run before turning it on, it is much quieter than my previous disposer. One of the best bonus features is that the black, rubber splash guard is easily removable. Just pull it out, clean it, and put it back in. On our old disposer, we couldn't pull it out and it would constantly get gunk on its underside and was a pain to clean.
To sum up, do yourself a favor and get this disposer and buy a second for a friend.
Customer Review: BUYER BEWARE: Atrocious Product and Customer Service Summary: 1 Stars
On the first weekend after the device was initially delivered, I spent several hours trying to manipulate the rubber cushion mount properly while using the EZ kit that came with the product. I could not do it. I called Waste-King's customer service support line; however, their phone service does not operate on weekends (curious: when do they think people find time to install these things, during work hours?). Because we could not wait until Monday to recoup the service of our primary sink I called my father, a skilled electrician with 30 plus years experience with home improvements and plumbing, and he spent an hour trying to manipulate the rubber cushion mount properly. He could not do it. Finally, we called a professional PLUMBER, on a Saturday, and he too spent several hours trying to manipulate the rubber cushion mount properly. He could not do it. I paid a premium.
Okay, something was clearly wrong so I simply sent the defective device back via UPS and in the timely manner (14 days) in which the company requested. After another two weeks time, I finally received a response and found it to be completely unacceptable and offensive. Waste-King DENIED me a refund due to the condition of the instructions, a short tear in the shipping box, and the fact that items needed to be removed from the packaging. ABSURD! Waste-King's appeal to logos suggested that the $1-$2 to replace said box, instructions, and repackage is equal to $132.06 that I paid for this item. Again, absurd.
In Waste-King's email response, they clearly insinuated that I am either lying and did not hire a professional or that the professional was not reputable. I attached an invoice proving otherwise.
All told, I have spent a great deal of money on this product. In order to try to install this defective device I had to buy new tools, and, after a failed installation, I required a professional plumber despite the additional cost associated with weekend service charges. Moreover, I had to pay to ship the defective item from Waste-King to me and vice-versa! And then they had the audacity to suggest that I pay to have the SAME defective item shipped back to me.
In the end, Amazon came to my aid and reimbursed me. Thank you Amazon.
(Lesson learned: DO NOT BUY FROM THIRD-PARTY VENDORS!)
Waste-King, INDEED!
Customer Review: Genuinely Five Star Performance Summary: 5 Stars
After a series of underperforming disposals, I chose this one to be installed during a major kitchen renovation. It's a little larger in diameter and a bit longer than many disposals (bigger motor at 1 horse, and a bigger food chamber), but will almost certainly fit in most sink cabinets unless you have some unGodly large and deep sink or a non-standard sink cabinet. But absent these conditions, this part should not be a problem.
It's also perhaps a little bit louder than some smaller, weaker ones, but, again, that's because it's got a a good bit more power than most. And a good, solid, heavy gauge sink will markedly reduce the vibration noise transmitted back into your kitchen.
Now for the good parts:
** It's fast in doing its job, which is grinding your food waste and dispatching it to the waste treatment plant.
** It doesn't jam. They don't even provide you with one of those oddly bent Allen wrienches you get with other disposals for freeing dreaded disposal lock-ups because, well, it doesn't jam. Get this product and you can throw out your treasured collection of disposal wrenches. They're dinosaur bones now.
The bad parts:
After more than a year of everyday use, THERE ARE NO BAD PARTS!
THREE NOTES:
** A plumber I trust gave me the following tips regarding disposals hooked to residential kitchen waste lines. (1) No coffee grounds, ever. Save them for your garden compost. (2) No bread, pasta, rice, or other starchy grains, ever. They're like glue in the drain line, clinging to the sides and ultimately reducing the workable pipe diameter to an unworkable pipe diameter. When this happens, think "expensive." (3) Never stuff your disposal to its capacity and then turn it on. Rather, turn on a flow of cold water, turn on the disposal, then feed in the food waste at a pace that the disposal can handle, especially if the waste is akin to the woody outer covering of broccoli stems or some such. When your unit returns to its "empty sound," run the water for a few more seconds, then shut it off.
** If you have a septic system, check with your expert on such matters before installing this or any disposal.
** I just ordered a seccond one of these for my vacation home.
Happy grinding!
Customer Review: Good solid product, easy installation and quiet too! Summary: 5 Stars
When we moved into this house 6 weeks ago, the first order of business was to replace the ugly black sink that seemed to absorb most of the light in our pure white kitchen. Why anyone would install a dull black granite sink where the countertops are white, the cupboards are white and the floors are white, we'll never know. It was just plain nasty and a real eyesore.
With that in mind, we purchased a new Kohler Stainless Steel sink at Lowes, a fantastic Moen brushed nickel faucet set on EBay, a 7 stage reverse osmosis water filter from Abundant Flow in Kansas and the Waste King L-8000 Legend waste disposer through Amazon. Surprisingly, everything arrived safe and sound and yesterday was installation day, (I'm a devout DIYer and just too cheap to want to call a plumber!). Thanks to good instructions, some decent tools, and Ace Hardware, Home Depot & Lowes that's just minutes away, I finished about 8 hours after I started to the delight of my smiling wife who couldn't believe how great the kitchen now looked. The black hole of Calcutta was gone, replaced by a sparkling, shiny new sink and a quiet disposal that really worked. (The Waste King generates about 1/4 of the noise of our old Insinkerator and guess what? When you drop food scraps into it, it doesn't spit them back at you any longer! They just seem to magically disappear.)
By the way, I did use the liquid detergent on the rubber gaskets and after a few moves that the boys from the WWF would be proud of, along with really tired biceps, I was able to finally lock the ring in place. Next time, if there ever is a next time, I'll attach the disposal unit to the new sink BEFORE I drop it into place.
All in all, we're really pleased with the quality of all of the items we purchased. The Kohler sink is heavy gauge metal and very well finished, the Moen faucets are beautiful to look at and solid as a rock, the RO water filter is keeping the chemicals and other garbage out of our drinking water and the Waste King L-8000 just purrs! Yesterday's 8 hours of toil and sweat was well worth it. I'll be the household hero this week for sure! Thanks Amazon!!! Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Operation Waste Disposer
Customer Review: Fast install by one old man with a dog watching Summary: 5 Stars
We got back from vacation to find our sink stopped up. One of my errant attempts to unstop it (plug one side of the sink & run the disposer) caused my 12 year old Waste King Gourmet to blow a seal and leak from the bottom. So much for shortcuts.
I checked Home Depot & Lowe's & found their better disposers at or above $200. Then I checked Consumer Reports and found this one was top rated and about half the price. Great fast Amazon checkout - had it in 3 days!!
I removed the old disposer and seat, THOROUGHLY cleaned the stainless steel sink on both sides and sat down with a soda to read the instructions. After all, it had been over a decade since I'd done this. It was my dog's first time to watch.
The instructions were thorough. All I had to do was follow them - particularly the leak test BEFORE hanging the disposer. It helps to have a big tub under your sink anytime you are disassembling the maze of pipes under there.
The whole process took about an hour and most of that was meticulously cleaning the sink so all residue and uneven spots were smooth.
I hung the disposer and checked for leaks again. To my delight, I had done it right the first time! After patting myself on the back, working out the related cramp from the reach, and plugging the unit in, I was impressed with how quiet it was.
Some of these reviews complained about noise and leaks. This isn't a job to be done hastily - just follow the steps carefully and be sure all surfaces are CLEAN. The noise level is much quieter than the one I removed. If you grind up bones or marbles, I suspect it would let you know something is going on, but the unit itself with normal food parts is not objectionable at all. Besides, How many minutes a year do you actually run a disposer?
I then called my wife to tell her she wouldn't need to help with the install & we didn't have to go out to eat tonight since the sink was back together. She took that with mixed emotions.
I was dreading the project because I'm not usually that lucky with plumbing tasks. I procrastinated longer than I worked. I would recommend and buy another Waste King disposer without giving it a second thought.
