Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste Disposer

Customer Review: Well deserved reputation for customer service
Summary: 5 Stars

This will be the first review I have ever written, but I was so impressed with how Waste King took care of me that I feel compelled to write on their behalf.

Having been without a garbage disposer for several days, I was excited to get the Waste King 8000 in the mail. Everything was going well until nearly the last step when I tried connecting the electricity. I live in an older house and there is no outlet under the sink, just a pair of exposed wires that hang out of a conduit. No problem. The instructions allow for this -- just take the electrical cord off the unit and install the electrical wires directly. Well, that's easier said than done. The wires in the electrical cord are crimped to the wires in the disposer REALLY well. I tried to be as careful as I could, but sure enough, I ended up pulling the white wire out of the unit.

When I called customer service to ask if they could help, I was honest and explained that I had made a mistake and pulled the white wire out. In fairly short order, Waste King agreed to replace the "end bell" on my unit if I would send it in. They even agreed to pay the return shipping!

I shipped the unit back, following the instructions that they had given me to the letter. Unfortunately, my package got lost on their end (I had a tracking order that proved it had arrived). After looking for it a couple of days they called to let me know that they were shipping a brand new unit.

In the meantime, I had an electrician install an electrical outlet so it was only a matter of minutes before I had the new unit into place and running. Whoa does this baby purrrrr! Coming from a 1/2 HP unit, this 1 HP unit doesn't labor in the slightest for the common stuff we put down the drain. It's pretty darn quiet too.

Look, this thing is great. The whole thing is relatively quiet. The lifetime warranty is the best in the business. And the unit is a piece of cake to install. You can gather that much from the rest of the reviews here. I'm here to tell you that Waste King's reputation for great customer service is well deserved if my experience was any indication. I'm a fan.

Customer Review: Warranty and price was the selling point
Summary: 4 Stars

Purchased on Dec 26 2010
With a lifetime limited warranty (as long as you own it), a low $103 price on amazon.com, and great reviews, I got the Waste King L-8000. Even if you owned this unit for say only 10 years, all the other non WasteKing disposals at this horse power (or even half its horse power) I looked at could not match the price per years of warranty of this one. Granted you have to be the original owner of it to get the warranty but I expect to be in my home at least another 12 years.

I did have to make two attempts to get the sink flange positioned well enough so it did not leak (follow the instructions to make sure it doesn't leak otherwise you could get the disposal hooked on and then have to remove it if the flange leaks). Put in the stopper and fill up the sink with water and wait at least 2 minutes to ensure no leaks. Per the instructions I used the rubber gasket for a stainless steel sink (no plumbers putty needed)
I took the suggestion of a previous poster and used a scissor jack with a small piece of plywood on top of it to act as a table to easily raise and position the disposal during installation. It made it really easy to raise it up to make contact to the sink flange. At that point you can rotate the disposal to align the disposal outlet to the existing plumbing and then by hand hold the elbow pipe in the disposal outlet hole to see if you need to cut the pipe down in length to fit into the existing plumbing (which I did). Also it makes it very easy to then twist the mounting ring onto the disposal. Per the instructions I did put a little dishwashing liquid on the hopper mount projections to make it easier to twist on the mounting ring.
For the existing plumbing I just used a rag and my hands to tighten the large plastic coupling nuts. You may however need to use a wrench to loosen them (and possibly tighten them if needed)

This unit was about 3 inches longer and a few inches wider than my old badger 5 that I replaced so do some initial measurements to make sure it will fit under your sink before deciding to buy it.

Customer Review: Powerful beast, yet Xtremely easy to install
Summary: 5 Stars

There are many reviews before me. Let me sum up my experience:

PROS:
- powerful (1HP!)
- quiet
- ready-to-mount (all comes in a box ), a quick mount is so easy, a caveman can do it! :)
- the quality is OUTSTANDING
- the price compared to other 1HP models is super cheap!

CONS:
- quick mount is easy, however the gasket may leak (it's a thin rubber ring from the sink side and a plastic gasket from the bottom). It MAY, I can't confirm that yet. let's wait for a few years. :) It's an easy fix tough.
- the unit clicks when starting. It's OK, not a biggy. Just needs getting used to.
- The price is good, but you need to justify it to yourself - do you need a disposer THAT powerful? Not every homeowner would easily shell 120 bucks off his pocket.

Properties:
The Waste King 8000 is a 4 times more powerful (1HP) than the average disposer (1/4HP). Yet when I installed it (literally 40 minutes ago) I ran it for 10-20 minutes with or without load, it was quiet enough to speak around it. It does however makes a click before starting and it is normal - it's a jam-free operation.

Installation:
It was super easy to install. I am NOT a plumber, I am a regular white-collar guy. And it took me a few hand- and screwdriver twists to take out the old disposer. An installation was basically a reverse process. Put the gasket. Twist the ring. Put the plumbing back. How cool is that!! Very easy.

The hardest part was to cut the plastic elbow which became too long because the Waste King 8000 is a few inches longer than the regular 1/4 disposer. I saw a piece of it off (took 1 minute). Hand-screw all rings and pipes back, plugged the cord and ... alliluja!.. the disposer worked nice and quiet!

Veeery easy! My long-term concern is though that the rubber seal on top of the sink may leak. Because plumbers normally put a putty there. But if it will (say, in 2-3 years), I will simply twist the unit off and seal it with a little plumbers putty. 5 more minutes and we are back in business.

Customer Review: Great Product.
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay so my Badger 5 went out, leaking all over the place but still works electrically. I went to depot and see that the badger prices have been going up like 5 bucks a year for the last five years and I'm like that's a little pricey. So I search amazon and see this. I read the reviews and they are mostly good, but I see a lot of them complaining about the difficulty of the installation. So I weigh it abit and then I figure I've built whole kitchens and installed dozens of badgers so how hard could it be.

Well this was the easiest installation I've ever done. Anyone who thinks this is hard has never tried to do a three bolt by thierself. It took a whole twenty minutes to uninstall the badger and have this in and working. All the plumbing on the Waste king are pretty close to the badger so no new piping. And I did this in twenty minutes without the right tools. I didn't want to go to my truck so I used a pair of channel locks and a 1/2 inch chisel to remove the old badger, the three bolt drain the dishwasher hose and put the new one in. If you find this product hard to install maybe you shouldn't be buying do it yourself type home products.

Next people complained this was noisy, it is ten times quieter than my badger was in my so not top of the line stainless steel sink. And as far as the opening being to small they must have changed the design because mine does not have that problem. As a bonus it can be removed from the top so when it gets old and disgusting you can just pull it out and replace it. Without having to remove the disposer as you have to do with the Badgers.

So all in all this is a great product, it's easy to install, comes with an attached cord ( badger require and additional purchase for a cord) and is very quiet when running.

As a side note, many complained about the cord because their house was hardwired, having a cord and outlet for the disposer has been code for years. You can't fault a company for building a product to code because your house is so old it doesn't meet code.

Customer Review: Waste King disposal lives up to the 'hype'
Summary: 5 Stars

We had a SinkMaster Bone Crusher disposal that lasted 12 years. I was used daily, although not particularly heavily, give that there's only 2 people in the house. It always handled everything we put into it quite well. It probably would have lasted another year, but the motor became VERY noisy, a sign that the bearings were worn, so I decided to replace it before it quit. I was predisposed to getting another disposal from Anaheim Manufacturing (that's who made the SinkMaster) not just because of the Bone Crusher's performance, but because on one occasion, we needed a replacement part. It was $2 in the pamphlet that came with the disposal, but I figured it must have increased in price. Called Anaheim, and found out it was the same, low price, and we received it in just 3 days. I was impressed by the service.

We also subscribe to Consumer Reports, and I found that the Waste King L-8000 was the top-rated disposal in their recent test. Anaheim no longer uses the SinkMaster moniker, having bought the Waste King name some years ago (which I didn't know until I went to their Web site to see what they had available).

We've had the L-8000 for about a month now. Although the SinkMaster was good, the Waste King is downright excellent. Not only does it dispatch chicken bones almost instantly, it is FAR quieter than the old SinkMaster. I was also easy to install. Anaheim has retained the same fast-and-easy mounting system, and I actually could have used the mount from the old SinkMaster on the Waste King, but decided to install the new one. Took only about an hour (remove old and install new), but be aware that that's because the lines in and out were in identically the same place and the same size as the old SinkMaster, and the electric socket was already there.

One of the most amazing features of this unit is that it has a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser. And that's not just for the unit; if it fails, Anaheim provides in-home installation.
