Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste Disposer

Customer Review: Nice, but consider buying the 3-bolt mount
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll start by saying I'm satisfied with my purchase. I have a lifetime warranty on a garbage disposal that is way more powerful than I'll need. It is reasonably quiet and works just fine. It was not difficult to install, but after I finished I didn't think the "easy mount" held the unit very well. I could actually wiggle the unit from side to side without much effort.

The plastic sleeve that is the "throat" of the disposer actually supports the entire weight of the unit. There is a groove almost at the bottom of this sleeve, and the rubber seal (cushion mount) fits into this groove. It keeps the metal locking ring from falling onto the floor while you are installing the unit, and it also wraps around the bottom of the sleeve to give some insulation between it and the top of the disposal unit. So basically, that rubber seal compressed into a groove in a plastic sleeve is what keeps the disposal from falling off. A good analogy would be for you to wrap just your finger tips over the top of a wall and hang all of your weight from them. Not very confidence-inspiring. Now, with that said, I don't think they would offer such a strong warranty if they didn't have faith in their design.

I was still a little nervous about this, so I built a little stand out of some spare wood, topped it with a layer of rubber, and slid it carefully under the disposal (very close clearance). You need to make sure not to force something like this under the unit or it will transmit a lot of vibration and make more noise.

Anyway, if I had it do to over again, I would spend the few extra dollars and buy the Legend 9880, which has a more substantial-looking 3-bolt mount similar to my old (and dead) Insinkerator Badger. From what I have seen and read, I do recommend purchasing a Waste King, and I always have good experiences buying from Amazon and their partners.

Customer Review: Powerful Unit
Summary: 5 Stars

This unit replaced an eight year old Badger One disposer that was leaking water from the three bottom holes. Self-installation took about two hours and only required a regular slot screwdriver and a phillips with extensions. Try to have someone assist with the installation if possible. The most difficult and time consuming part was removing the old Badger from its' sink retainer hardware. Be sure to carefully read the Badger manual before attempting this! Note that the Waste King comes supplied with a 1.5 inch wide elbow discharge end tube. Some drain configurations may require a straight end tube like mine did. I found it easier to attach the end tube to the unit before attaching it to the sink. The EZ mount system was easy to install and is far more easier to work with than a 3-bolt mount system like that of the Badger.

The only flaw is that the plastic housing body partially covers the opening where the discharge end tube attaches with a flange and two screws. This requires that the tube be inserted at a slight angle for attachment. Also, having to use the flange and screws for attachment was somewhat awkward. The Badger had used a screw on retainer ring that could be applied by hand. Interestingly, when compared to other disposers, this one does not have a hex key attachment at the bottom for rotating the turtable to dislodge stuck objects. Use of a broom handle is recommended.

So far, the Waste King L-8000 has performed very well without any problems. It seems to be less noisy that the Badger and is much more powerful with 1hp versus 1/3hp. Delivery only took two days from the order date. The price with shipping was $121.32 which was a good value when compared to other retail waste disposers. Overall, I highly recommend this model.

Customer Review: Speed Demon
Summary: 4 Stars

Received item in good timeframe. Easy to install, just follow the instructions. Hardest part was adjusting the piping it was hooking up to. This unit is replacing an ISE 444 which died after 6 years of service. It had the 3 bolt attachment so if you are replacing a 3 bolt attachment just check your piping connections before you cut the length of the plastic discharge pipe coming out of the waste king.

Comparing the two units (444 vs. 8000)the 8000 spins a lot quicker and dishes in the sink or even on the counter nearby can vibrate when the unit is on. Funny enough though the 8000 is quieter than the 444. The 8000 needs more coaxing to accept food into the unit than the 444 due to a smaller more resistant rubber entry piece. The good thing is that the rubber piece is removable.

Couple of things why I bought this over another ISE. I have had 2 ISE units die on me over the past 10 years so I like the fact that the 8000 comes with a lifetime warranty. I also like the fact that the reset button is on the front instead of underneath. I like the fact that the removable rubber piece is easily removed in case something you didn't want to go in the unit accidentially goes in and you need to fish it out. Much easier to see everything with the rubber piece removed. Finally the price is a lot cheaper than the ISE. The 8000 doesn't come with a allen wrench to turn the grinder if it gets stuck whereas the 444 did. Even when I used the wrench for the 444 however, the unit was dead and it didn't help even though I could turn the grinder easily. Hopefully this lasts longer than my previous ISE units. Time will tell.

Customer Review: I wish I had spent the money on an ISE
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased the Waste King L-8000 to replace an ISE that had started leaking and according to ISE was not repairable. When the unit arrived, I was amazed at the difference in weight between it and the ISE it was replacing. I guess that is due to the plastic used for much of the construction. Luckily, while I waited the three days for the unit to be delivered, I re-read the reviews that discuss how to install the unit. Proper positioning of the Cushion Mount is very important which I found out after trying to improperly position the unit a few times. My installation was direct wire and the unit came pre-wired. I had to cut the power cord out. The total time to install the unit was about one hour and the only tool I needed was a screwdriver and wire cutters.

Once installed and running I was quite disappointed with the operation. Other reviewers commented on how quiet the unit is. I found it to be much louder than the ISE it replaced. In fact, it sounds like a small airplane buzzing around my kitchen. Also, as already mentioned by other reviewers, the throat is narrower than the ISE. I find I have to push food waste through the splash guard and water tends to back up unless I do. Typically, when that happens, the unit shakes as the unit clears debris and water that had backed up.

I've only had it a couple of weeks so I'm hoping I get used to the way the unit operates. At this point, I wish I had spent the extra money to get the ISE. Even if it does leak in 5-7 years, I wouldn't have had to listen to my wife complain every time she uses the less expensive unit.

Customer Review: Fantastic product +++ Highly recommend this unit +++++

I like many of you purchased an Insinkerator 444 stainless steel replacement garbage disposal, at extra cost I may add. I figured like most of you that it would be worth the difference because the last one rusted out. Well, 5 years latter, just out of warranty the unit rusted out. I was not happy about it at all. I found out that the lower chamber plate was not made out of stainless, it was just plain steel. Shame on Insinkerator! They know all about this problem, it has been around a long time. They must figure that people will replace the POS with a supposedly upgraded unit, just like I did. I think that the word is getting out on them fast. I did my research and it led me to purchase a Waste King L-8000 Legend. I got a great deal on it through Amazon! I purchased it for less than the POS that I was replacing five years latter. The Waste King L-8000 Legend more powerful and quieter that the POS that I replaced! I loaded it up just to see what it would do, it chewed though it effortlessly just like it was empty. I wondered if the disposal was grinding the food up at all, I had to look down in the chamber just to make sure the food was gone, it was.

Oh, buy the way I had a neighbor that has the same problem with his Insinkerator disposal, guess what, he asked me and he now has a new Waste King L-8000 on order.

Do yourself a BIG favor and buy one of these units; it will be the last one that you purchase for your house. Did you notice the lifetime warranty that Waste King puts on this unit? Pretty powerful statement if you ask me. :o)
