Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste Disposer

Customer Review: Great product and price
Summary: 5 Stars

I've lived in my home for 34 years and this is the fourth disposal I've installed. I think it will be the last. I've learned that the stronger the unit the more convenient it is, so when I needed to replace my 3/4 HP InSinkerator which started leaving lots of unground garbage in the bottom of the disposal, I went looking for a 1 HP unit. When I found this one at a great price ($125 with shipping since I am a Prime subscriber.) I spent probably 30 minutes surfing the web to see what was wrong with it, since it seemed to be too good to be true. All the reviews were excellent and the manufacturer had lots of information about the unit and its installation on their website. So I ordered it, intending to get a plumber or handyman to install it.

Once it arrived (the next day, even though the shipping commitment was two days) I opened it up and looked at it, and compared it to the existing installation. It didn't look too challenging, so I took a deep breath and undertook to install it myself. It took me literally 20 minutes from start to finish. I removed the old installation fixture (the three bolt variety), cleaned the opening of all the old putty, and installed the EZ Mount that came with the unit. No tools were required other than a screwdriver to loosen the old installation. I had an electric outlet and existing drain pipe and dishwasher connection. I was able to simply reuse them. It worked perfectly the first time, no leaks, nothing left behind, about as noisy as the one it replaced (not much), very solid.

I couldn't be happier.

Customer Review: Easy to Install - Hard Wiring Instructions
Summary: 5 Stars

Installation of the Legend 8000 is very simple. You do not need to purchase an adapter kit just take the old stuff out and put in what comes with disposer. I had a 3 bolt system attached to stainless steel sink. Removing it took 15 minutes but only because I had trouble figuring out how to remove a metal o-ring that was snapped in to hold up the old unit (butter knife did the trick). I could do it again in 5 minutes.

The unit comes with a plug, so you can plug it into grounded outlet. My old unit was hard wired to a switch so I did the same with this unit. I had no desire to try to install a electrical outlet in the back of my cabinet. Hardwiring the unit isn't described that well in documentation. Here are a few tips that may help..You will need 1 romex gang box adaptor ring (its the metal nut that you put into metal electric box punch outs that have a lock down to hold wire in place. You can find them in any hardware store).

1. Remove bottom plate
2. Cut black and white wires and unscrew ground
3. Plug wire comes through a rubber grommet. Use screw driver and gently work the grommet out backside of disposer.
4. Put romex adapter into the hole grommet came out of, run romex through and tighten down the adapter so romex can't be pulled out.
5. Strip back wires then attach black to black and white to white with wire nuts and attach ground to ground screw.
6. Tuck everything in and replace bottom plate.

Rest of installation took less then 30 minutes and was very easy.

Customer Review: Great product and price
Summary: 5 Stars

Needed to replace my old in-sink-erator which just wore out and developed an internal leak. Wanted a 3/4 hp model, but this WK L-8000, 1 hp model was less expensive with great reviews.

I add 5-stars to the long list of 5-star reviews, because it was awesome. Did installation myself. That only took 10 minutes, not because I am particularly handy, but the instructions were so simple, and the way it connected to the sink was greatly improved over my last disposal. Needed only a simple slotted screwdriver for installation. The instructions were well-written, clear, in good English, not a translation of Chinese that you find in knock-off electronics.

As far as function, does what it says, no complaints. Really didn't need 1 hp for home use, but since it was cheaper than 3/4 hp model, why not, plus a lifetime warranty. Love the auto-reverse feature and convenient front access for the reset button. Noise is no better and no worse than my old model, which means I feel both were pretty quiet. Not so quiet that I will forget it and leave it running quiet. But that means I can still carry on a conversation with it running quiet, and the machine is hard to hear with the water hitting the bottom of the basin. Any disposal won't be whisper quiet because of that gaping cavity at the top waiting to receive food pieces lets the sound escape more than any other surface of the machine (plus attaching to a stainless steel sink does not do as much as other surfaces to dampen noises even though the tub is sound insulated as well).

Customer Review: Pleasant surprise
Summary: 5 Stars

Just installed the unit and it was pretty easy to do. Although the instructions could be written in a more linear fashion instead of Sunday comics windowpane style, everything that you need to do is mentioned in the text. Hard for people to concentrate that long, myself included.
My only issue was that I was not generous enough with the plumbers putty the first time. I had laid a continuous bead but the profile of the sink flange and sink were different and there was quite a gap to fill. I did the suggested water test and found the error of my ways before attaching the disposal.
Now for the pleasant surprise. I was replacing an Emerson 3/4 hp unit whose bearings had developed arthritis and was very surprised to find that this unit weighs 12 pounds vs 18 pounds for the old one. 1 1/3X the power and only 2/3X the weight! Anyone who has ever worked on disposers knows that holding the unit up with one hand while trying to engage the mount ring is the biggest challenge. It is usually awkward working under the sink and with the peanut gallery cheering you on it's hard to concentrate. This was easy to hold up and engage, bravo Waste King, I kiss your ring.
As for one comment I read about it being hard to reach into the grinding area, well, duh! Those of you that are fond of your fingers may want to purchase a pair of those oversize kitchen tweezers about ten inches long for retrieving lost objects. Also handy for the getting the last olive from the bottom of the jar for the evening martini.

Customer Review: Great disposer at a great price
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this disposer to replace a builder-grade disposer that was already on an EZ Mount flange. Installation was pretty simple, with the most difficulty lurking in adjusting the existing drain plumbing to fit the larger Waste King disposer (the old one was a tiny 1/2 HP piece of junk).

The L-8000 is much more quiet than my previous disposer, although not as silent as the top of the line In-sinkerators. Of course, at less than 1/3 the price, I didn't expect it to be silent. Its grinding ability seems top-notch, with less time spent making that "working" sound when I put waste down it.

I'll echo the comment of other reviewers that the neck where the disposer meets the sink is much more narrow than In-Sinkerators, but that was true of the old EZ Mount disposer I replaced as well, and may be a function of the EZ Mount design. I don't love the narrow neck as waste doesn't easily wash through it to the grinder, but once you get used to pushing the waste through the neck with the factory-supplied stopper it isn't too big of a hassle. I'd disagree that this is a safety feature, as pushing the waste down the neck has my hands closer to the grinder on a more frequent basis than any of the In-sinkerator disposers I've had in the past.

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase so far (it's been of a month of daily use), and have already recommended this disposer to friends looking to replace their old ones.
