Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste DisposerCustomer Review: New Chore in the Kitchen Summary: 2 Stars
I don't know how this garbage disposer got such great ratings. I purchased it from Amazon and it looked like a fine piece of machinery. I did notice the made in China which explained to me the low price. Most of their disposer's are made in the USA and have a tremendous track record for quality. This seems to be high quality also but my experience about things made in China is that they sometimes skimp on some critical component which causes premature failure. But that's not my beef here. One of the features of this garbage disposer's is a removable splash guard in the throat of the disposer. This is supposed to be a nice feature so you can take it out to clean it. Although I've never had the urge to clean the splash guard on my garbage disposer, maybe some people do. The trouble is, to make this splash guard removable it has a quarter-inch rim around it. This reduces the effective throat diameter by 1/2 inch. It doesn't sound like much but if you put ANYTHING into the disposer you're going to have to physically push it down into where them blades are. I'm not kidding; a tiny piece of lettuce, even with the water on full power pushing it down won't do it, you have to get something to push it down through. I've even made several cuts into the splash guard to make it weaker with only slight improvement. I now have a new chore that consumes significant time in the kitchen; ramming stuff into this new garbage disposer.
Customer Review: My Last Disposer? Summary: 4 Stars
I replaced a Badger with this Waste King. The Badger had 3-bolt hardware and the Waste King has Easy Mount hardware. There is no need for an adapter. Simply remove the 3-bolt hardware and replace it with the Easy Mount Hardware which comes with the disposer.
It took me several hours to install the Waste King because I was watching the Texas Rangers in their first World Series and working between innings. The PVC drain pipe going into the wall was routed under the Badger. The Waste King is a larger disposer which required purchasing a 90 degree PVC elbow and rerouting the drain pipe. It was relatively painless and is not leaking.
I recommend applying soap to the Easy Mount gasket even though the directions say it is optional. I did not use soap and had to wail on the ring with a hammer to move the tab to the locked position. After it locked, I had to twist the disposer to recenter the sink attachment in the indention in the sink. Without soap it wasn't that easy.
My wife and I both perceive the Waste King to be louder than the Badger, therefore I subtracted one star from the rating. I completed this challenge with somewhat more success than the Rangers, and given the lifetime warranty, I hope this will be the last such challenge for me but not for them.
Customer Review: Time will tell. Summary: 4 Stars
We got the product from the Waste King online store representative without a hitch. The lack of heft surprised me. Since it sits under a sink out of sight, I don't care if the housing is grey plastic as long as the unit works well and is reasonably quiet. And, so far, we're pleased with the performance. The sink ring is chrome, not a a buffed stainless, so expect your scrubbing of a stainless sink to scratch it. The neck is plastic and has a plastic threaded ring to tighten against the sing ring and sink. It will needed some additional tightening after the first few uses to get ultimately snug and prevent any leaks (the soap trick for the rubber gasket is a good one). Our plumber commented on the cheapness of the plastic neck and tightening ring and expressed some doubts on the longevity of those parts. Time will tell. Consumer Reports didn't seem to dwell on longevity testing at all. Now that the water supply lines and waste line are run to accommodate the girth of this unit, any replacements will be very straightforward. Time will tell if this purchase was a good one. For now, the unit is a great bargain.
30 DEC 2010: We're still just as pleased over a year later. The unit remains snuggly attached without adjustments. The units reduces waste pretty quickly and capably.
Customer Review: installation is a challenge Summary: 4 Stars
Just finished installing it tonight. I have installed my fair share of disposals over the years, and this installation was by far one of the most troublesome.
Very important: make sure the locking ring at the bottom of the sink flange can slide over the rubber gasket. I had the gasket too high on the sink flange and spent 2 hours trying to push the disposer high enough to lock in place with the locking ring, and of course it didn't work--very, very frustrating!! The fix was to pull the rubber gasket lower, which allowed the locking ring to twist freely over the gasket. Had to do all this while on the floor under the sink, so it wasn't much fun.
As for the electrical connection, this is a replacement disposal, and the old disposal was direct wired. So I decided to remove the included 3-prong cord and direct wire this disposal to the switched wire rather than install a receptacle under the sink. It wasn't overly difficult, but in the end, it would have been less work to just install a receptacle under the sink. If you have this decision, add the receptacle and just use the attached 3-prong cord.
Looking forward to getting good use from this top rated consumer reports disposal, just wish it had been a little easier to install. Good luck.
Customer Review: Excellent product, great customer service Summary: 5 Stars
Just my luck, my kitchen garbage disposal went out over the July 4th weekend. So I began to research the best garbage disposal available at a decent cost. I came across this product time and time again so decided this is the right brand to buy. My Internet searches revealed that I could purchase the product from Sears for $199 and from Best Buy for the retail price of $239. But, the company that produces this product (Wast King) had a 1 hp disposal available on Amazon for $109. Although I needed the product as quickly as possible, I opted for the cheapest way to get the item shipped to my home -- regular UPS ground. It cost me less than $10 to do it this way. Here is where I was really impressed. Although I ordered the product on July 5th (a national holiday), I received confirmation that the product was picked up by UPS at the Waste King site that very day. An even though I was expecting to wait 7-10 days for the shipment to arrive to my home in Florida, it actually was delivered on Friday July 9th. What a pleasant surprise. Bottom line is this is a great company to buy your product and we love the disposal. It's powerful but quiet. The lifetime in home warranty also convinced us that this is the way to go. And of course, the quality product for the price can't be beat!!
