Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste Disposer

Customer Review: very good
Summary: 5 Stars

Like many here, had a in-sink-aerator before that was making a ton of noise and had began leaking. I originally tried to find an exact match hoping that I would not need to make any plumbing changes. The reviews for it were pretty clear that the leak was a design flaw and not a one time incident, followed reviews to this one and took the chance.

My past one was hardwired with the romex going into the old disposal. I took the opportunity to add a gfci outlet under the sink for this unit to plug in. That took the most time but its a better way to do it for sure. This thing installed easily, had no trouble. After using it for a week, its pretty quiet - not silent it is a 1 horsepower motor afterall. My garage door opener is a 1/3hp motor ~ think about that when you consider how quiet it is.

Lastly, I'll share an email i got from my wife on Monday while I was at work:

OMG! I've broken away from my 'dish washing mode' to tell you that when I
turned on the disposal, I freak out at the nice smooth quiet noise it made
as the water was going down the drain... for a split second I thought it
was breaking because i didn't hear all that clonking noise from before.
The new disposal ROCKS!!!!!!

Customer Review: Great choice; Great value; Great product

The most difficult part of replacing our 10 year old disposal was getting the old one out. I am an "experienced" do-it-yourselfer and dabble in a number of around-the-home systems and projects. Plumbing is not my favorite, but it gives me a chance to practice a part of the English language that is not used daily. This installation was different and after getting the old one out, the Waste King L-8000 installed as if everything was designed just for it. The machine is a larger unit than the old one with respect to height, so we had to make accommodations for the items we store in the under-the-sink cabinet, but that was the largest down-side we have had so far after several months of use. Although not so quiet as I would have liked it to be, since we are not big users of waste disposals (we are on an aerobic septic system), it is fine for our open kitchen/nook/family room area. This machine performs at least as well as its advertised specs. The unanswered part of the Waste King promise, i.e., lifetime, in-home warranty, is untested and, hopefully, will remain so for a long time. It shipped quickly and arrived on the expected delivery day. After doing quite a bit of research, this unit seemed the best value when price, performance, and warranty are considered.

Customer Review: It's Good To Be The King
Summary: 5 Stars

This waste disposer replaced a Kenmore that started leaking after 10yrs of use. Not bad I guess...
Pros: Lifetime warranty, a lot more quiet than the one it replaced, easy to install and eats like a goat. Oh, did I mention that this costs less than comparable units with a 10yr or less warranty. Yeah, they may have new and improved teeth that can chew up and spit out a car engine, but for what I allow down the drain, the Waste King is more than capable.
Cons: I would have liked to have had included in the box the option to hardwire the unit using the existing wiring. The unit comes with a 3 prong plug that you have to cut off in order to hardwire. Not a biggie, but it requires you to have to buy a strain relief to properly hardwire the unit. Again, the lifetime warranty far outweighs the inconvienance of having to buy $5 of extra hardware.
I recommended the same unit to a friend of mine who is also very happy with it.
BTW, just in case you're wondering, I installed the disposer in less than 2 hrs and that was taking my time. Your time may vary depending on how your plumbing aligns up with this unit. Mine was a half inch lower, which luckily, my plumbing allowed for the adjustment without having to redo everything.

Customer Review: Very pleased 1.5 yrs later

If you're considering any other brand of disposal in this price range I can tell you from experience that this is by far the most efficient and thorough disposal I have ever witnessed and I base this opinion on over thirty years of mechanical contracting experience with innumerable hours spent in commercial and institutional kitchens.

The installation took minutes and the warranty is great. We have had zero issues in the past year and a half with this machine.

This disposal is better than most commercial grade disposals at any multiple of cost and by virtue of design is not going to develop leaks due to corrosion caused by standing water.

It has no issue chewing up anything we throw at it. You simply cannot beat this disposal for residential use.

When our 85 yr old neighbor saw this disposal in action she had to have one too, so she purchased it and I installed it, again, in minutes. She has been using hers for over a year now with zero issues which is impressive considering that in the past I was at her house clearing her old disposal of debris (that this machine obviously consumes) at least three times a year .

Great product, Waste King

Customer Review: Waste King L-8000 disposer
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very good value when purchasing through Amazon. Lifetime guarantee is a nice benefit.
This 1 hp unit starts with a thud, however is noticeably quieter than my previous Kenmore/Insinkerator brand. Would have liked to use the previous Insinkerator drain flange, but could not since this required the adapter kit that dropped down the unit about an inch. The deep sink this was being installed on would not allow this. The drain flange supplied with the Waste king was plastic, and had thicker flange than the Insinkerator. This causes a small amount of water to not drain since the sink drain flange is slightly thicker than the sink recess of the granite sink. This probably would not be an issue for most other sinks such as ss variety. Like others have mentioned, the drain opening is a bit small diameter than the insinkerator, so any inadvertent items falling down the drain needed to be fished out with a tongs. Probably designed this way for safety. Installation after figuring out which drain flange to use was reasonable, using the provided instructions. Would have been considerably easier just to attach the disposer to the original stainless steel flange. All in all it appears to be a good product.
