Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste DisposerCustomer Review: Great Price but wish it had a couple options Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this product while doing a major Kitchen renovation. First time I've ever had a disposal so don't really have any disposal experience to compare it to. Was fairly easy to install. One tip I could offer is to check the height of the waste line coming out of the wall. I got lucky as I installed it to a 10 inch deep sink and so the discharge level of the disposal was maybe 16-20 inches below the countertop. Need to have the waste pipe lower than the point of discharge from the disposal. Had read some reviews about this unit being loud and producing a lot of vibration. I didn't find the unit to be overly loud and it produces very little vibration. I suspect those that are experiencing vibration have it mounted to a lesser guage sink and perhaps a laminate countertop. My only complaint is the sink flange is chrome which clashed with my brushed stainless sink. I spent an additional $50.00 to get a brushed stainless sink flange, adapter, locking ring and 3 bolt mounting bracket which were all needed to change the sink flange to stainless. Would have been nice if stainless was offered with the disposal.
Customer Review: Good Value, quiet operation, easy install Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the Waste King L-8000 on Amazon to replace a GE 1/2 HP disposal. I had made a trip to Home Depot and considered the new quiet insinkerator models, but frankly, thought they were a bit expensive. After reading many reviews and making my own online comparisons, I decided on the Waste King, in part for its value price, but also because the reviews were as good as any other, some of which were priced for three times as much. I was NOT disappointed with the Waste King. Powerful, not too bulky, strong warranty, good manufacturer, easy to install with good directions and very quiet, which somewhat surprised me because some of the reviewers said it was not as quiet as they had hoped.
The only thing I didn't like, is that I had some difficulty removing the electric chord from the housing. Waste King supplies a plug in chord, but I chose to use the exisiting hard wired chord that ran the old disposal, primarily because I couldnt get at the electric box to install a plug. It is nice for them to supply a chord, but it was difficult to get the rubber bushing out of the housing.
Customer Review: Easy to install, few small issues Summary: 4 Stars
Upside: Very easy to install, good instructions in both the paper manual and the Waste King online video. We replaced a contractor grade 1/3hp Badger in a Kohler porcelain sink (not deep well) that had a three screw mount with lock ring. The Easy Mount kit fit just fine, and installed with minimal effort. The only thing I needed that wasn't in the packaging was the plumbers putty. Install time: 1 hr which included a complete run-through before final assembly. Operation: Very quite, and very powerful. Beats the pants off that Badger.
Downside: The Waste King "Disposal Flange" is integral to the installation. This means that even though we have a matching Disposal Flange (and stopper) that matches our faucet hardware, it doesn't work with the Waste King. Secondly I don't like the fact Waste King has branding all over the silver Flange in the bottom of the sink. I'll buy their hardware but I have no desire to see their brand every time I use the sink. I'd order the *matching color* Flange off their website, but I'm pretty sure they have branding on it as well.
Customer Review: non-plumber report in an installation Summary: 4 Stars
I just installed a WK L-8000 1 HP unit. Being no plumber and having failed on two previous installations in different homes, I approached the project w/ some trepitation. However once I figured out not to use the available Waste King 3101 ISE Adapter Kit that I also bought through Amazon (more on that below), the installation went off w/out a hitch and I was able to snap the unit into place under my stainless sink by hand.
I removed a 1/2 hp Badger which was attached using the 3-bolt system. I used the EZ replacement system and it seemed to go fine.
I actually couldn't figure out why anyone would want or need the adapter kit. True I did need to remove a metal o-ring to remove the Badger sink flange, etc. but in at least my case that only took a few seconds. The other thing about the adapter is that it would (as far as I could see) leave the Waste King hanging further down and also cause the rubber flap to be quite deep in the entry pipe. I'm sure there is a good reason for the kits existence would I couldn't figure it out.
Customer Review: Great but not perfect. Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this as a replacement for a builder's grade 1/4 HP. I expected a few more difficulties getting this put in but it wasn't bad at all. Luckily the previous system had a quick mount release so I didn't have to replace the entire flange and assembly. It didn't feel fully seated when installing it, but its got a good seal. I'd have to attribute this just to the compression of the rubber collar. The only issue I had was the drain pipe needed to be cut down to match existing plumbing.
As for operation, its pretty quiet when running, but when it starts up if there's no food or water in the basin, there's a very loud knock as the blades are locking into position. Once it comes up to speed however, its super quiet, no matter what I throw down there. I have noticed as more and more garbage gets processed, this knock isn't as pronounced. I assume this is from the natural buildup around the blade mechanism.
I would absolutely recommend this as a great, cheap alternative to one of the units from a big box store.
