Tools and Hardware Reviews of Water Tech BROOM Pool Blaster, Aqua Broom

Customer Review: Defective - Quit after few minutes
Summary: 1 Stars

The pluses: The unit is light-weight, made of plastic, and can be connected to a pool pole for added length. It requires no electricity, runs on five D batteries and doesn't require a hose. The filter pocket is quite small, but easy to take out and clean, and replacement bags are included. The vacuum is relatively cheap.

The minuses: The unit itself stopped working after only a few minutes of use. For the brief time it was running, the suction doesn't seem that powerful. I tried several troubleshooting methods to get it functional again. I tested the brand new batteries and made sure that they were strong, repositioned the contact spring at the bottom of the battery housing to insure direct contact, let the unit dry completely and thoroughly cleaned the filter. After each try, the vacuum would come on, run briefly in the water, then die. Way too temperamental for me!

The design of the vacuum is flawed. The battery housing, as mentioned by another reviewer, is not protected from water so if you forget to twist the vacuum head to ON before inserting it in water, your batteries get wet. Not a great design for a vacuum made to run under water.

I returned for a refund.

Customer Review: Pretty Solid
Summary: 4 Stars

We received our Aqua Broom last week and used it for the first time over the weekend. We have a very small, round pool (8' across x 2.5' deep), but there were plenty of things loitering at the bottom, hence we wanted something to suck up the dirt, sediment, etc. The pool does have a pump on it, with a filter, but once it's turned off, everything settles. Needless to say, this vacuum worked pretty well right from the get-go. We've used it a couple times since the initial use. We did notice that you really have to go slowly with it, being careful to suck up rather than just swirl around, but as long as you really take your time, there aren't any issues. We haven't used the larger sand type filter that came with it yet but again, so far, so good. I guess I wouldn't recommend it for a larger pool just because I think it would take for-ev-er to completely clean something with much more size than ours, but alas, it does the job just fine for us.

Customer Review: Works, if you can get it to turn on and off
Summary: 3 Stars

For the people that say it doesn't pick up the dirt, my guess is they are only using the included filter, which does NOT filter out small particles. They sell that separately - but a cut off piece of nylon stockings works great as a sand filter (I live in the desert, and get LOTS of fine sand in both the pool and spa) - just stretch it over the filter it came with.

All in all - this is the best thing we have found to vacuum both the hot tub and the above ground pool. It's efficiency is what kept it from getting a single star due to it's one MAJOR drawback, which is after the 3rd use, trying to turn it on or off literally requires using a vice! I am lucky, and have a vice bolted to a workbench already sitting about 10ft from the pool, but without that, I would have thrown it away.

If they could put in an on/off switch that worked, I would have given it 5 stars... as it DOES clean both the pool and spa.

Customer Review: Does the job
Summary: 3 Stars

I originally bought a hose powered pool vacuum (the kind that uses water flow to create suction) to clean my small fish pond. And it did exactly as I expected: filled the pond to the brim without getting enough debris out. The Aquabroom makes much more sense, sucking water from the pond through a filter a recycling the water back into the pond. It basically does the job but its major draw back is the size of the filter. I haven't measured but the capacity of the filter looks to be about half a cup to a cup. It also would benefit from an on/off switch instead of twisting the base to the handle. It also needs to be sold with the extended handle since the short one it comes with is too short to be of much use. With those modifications I would say it is worth buying. Or if you don't have much debris in you pond/pool it would be perfect.

Customer Review: Works well.

I was surprised to see a battery operated water vacuum like this having any reasonable suction. It does! It takes 5 D-cells and seems to last a few hours on fresh battery power. Like previous reviewers pointed out, the mesh filter they provide has fairly large holes, so I added a woman's nylon 'footies' over the filter and it works perfect and even gets sand at the bottom of my spa. (The footies stocking even has the sewn edge to allow it to stay in place on the filter screen perfectly.) This is a good choice. The ON/OFF mechanism is NOT at all that hard to understand as previous reviewers stated, and you simply turn it for ON or OFF. I opened it up and leave it exposed to air when not in use to allow everything to dry (I am guessing this will make it last longer). I would buy again in a heartbeat.
