Tools and Hardware Reviews of NVL-651C, Waterpik 6 Setting Hand-Held Shower Head with Massage - White with Chrome Accents

Customer Review: What a "STINK!"
Summary: 1 Stars

This item caused me one of the "worst" weeks of my life.

I recently purchased this product as a replacement, because the hose-extension on another (diff mfr)-"a silver-black metal banded hose type," had developed a "kink" (seemingly due to the "metal-band winding" part of the hose wearing out and "kinking" the plastic part of the hose) This kink in the hose intermittently impeded the water flow as you moved the whole assembly around while taking a shower.

I bought this model, thinking I could prevent a similar recurrence of this type of hose collapse, by getting one that was "all plastic." BIG MISTAKE, at least in this case.

First, this unit WORKED GREAT. I have low water-pressure, and this unit actually managed to produce a "stinging" type shower on one of the settings. The massage setting was working, but the pulses were so quick, that it wasn't like my former one of "noticeable" pulses. But, I didn't care ... just was HAPPY to have a "potent" pressured shower," after many years of being frustrated because of low-water-pressure.

Now, WHERE THE PROBLEM CAME IN... AND IT'S A "DOOZY!"

I installed the unit, took a shower, and, as indicated above was IMPRESSED ... not only was this product "cheaper" than the next model up (with the silver-black metal banded hose)... but for some reason: IT HAD THE BEST AND MOST POWERFUL WATER PRESSURE SETTINGS OF ANY UNIT I HAD EVER USED OVER THE YEARS. I was "ecstatic!"

The next day I NOTICED A "BAD ODOR" when I walked into that bathroom. Since, I had recently had "kids" visiting and using that bathroom... well, I thought, maybe one of them had "peed" on the floor somewhere... and the "bacteria" were finally activated. So, no problem ... wash the whole toilet, and adjacent floor areas. I used white "vinegar" (acid) plus a bathroom cleaner first. The vinegar smell was somewhat over-powering and "seemed" to work, but as it wore off, I got intermittent whiffs of the "original bad odor." Not to worry ... I'll use "hydrogen peroxide" in a spray bottle... did the whole area again... seemed to work. Now, the next day I walk in the bathroom, and get just occasional whiffs of "bad odor" ... but not in areas around toilet bowl, but in the middle of the room and at elevation... I went around "sniffing" the whole floor... and nothing by toilet, but get whiffs intermittently in other places... far from the bowl. Where did that kid "pee" I thought... in the hot-air vent??? ...or high on a wall???

Next, was the "black uv light bit." Got one, and "'round midnight," I did the "black-light" bit. (actual light bulb in desk-lamp) thought this would be more revealing than the "flashlight type...more powerful light, etc." Thought I could make out some "yellowish stains" in some of the grout on the floor... mostly near the toilet bowl. Geez: thought I covered that with the "hydrogen peroxide"... well gonna get the "more powerful" chlorine bleach and see if those "nasty stinky bacteria" can withstand THAT!

Used the "bathroom cleaner" for mildew, etc.... one with "chlorine bleach"...did the whole bathroom floor, toilet, shower walls, etc...basically the whole "nine-yards," except for the "ceiling and wallpaper."

Now, it smelled like bleach...shut the door...FIGURED "GOT YA!...SUCCESS...CANNOT FAIL!"

GUESS YA ALREADY KNOW... NEXT MORNING... STILL SMELL A BIT OF BLEACH... AND "HERE AND THERE" ...THAT "STINK!"

Now, I'm really getting depressed... kid MUST HAVE "peed" on the ceiling or in the hot-air vent. NOW WHAT???

...start doing a FULL SNIFF AROUND... I MEAN IF IT TAKES HOURS... I'LL GO INCH-BY-SQUARE INCH... I'M GONNA FIND it/some THIS TIME!

Unexpectedly, I get to shower in my "sniff-capade" and I GET A WHIFF... not near where someone could have "peed" but HIGH UP ON THE WALL BY THE SHOWER HEAD! I couldn't have "hit that...let alone a little kid!"

Out comes the "mildew chlorine bleach product." Re-clean, entire shower, tub...all the way up to ceiling. FOUND IT, GOTTCHA, ETC. Well several hours later...bathroom smells clean, but "bleachy." SO, I GET CLOSE TO WALL NEAR THE "SHOWER HEAD!"

THERE "IT" IS! The BAD ODOR is coming from there! ON THE WALL, about 9 inches below the "shower head pipe!" "What the hell... how can this be? Maybe "something got in the attic, down the wall...AND DIED THERE!" Gave it "another shot of bleach"... sprayed it off "with the shower"... and guess what NOW THE SMELL SEEMS TO "BE MOVING!" Maybe the "bathroom" has a "ghost, bad spirit," etc. Holy Sh_t!

Actually No! I bring the SHOWER HEAD close and sniff...nothing...I move down to the "white plastic hose." BINGO, the "hose" stinks with that odor when you "smell up close!"

Conclusion: the "shower head" is great, but THE HOSE STINKS (device made in China). Don't get me wrong "lots of good mfr prods out of China." But, occasionally THEY GET SOMETHING WRONG (I had experiences of non-standard bolt/screw size issues...where they are non-sae and non-metric). So, THIS WHITE PLASTIC HOSE STINK is one of those things that SLIPPED BETWEEN THE CRACKS...of "quality control," whoever, whatever....

So, mfrs better get on this one...

You, could have people with "stinky bathrooms" all "over-the-world" going "up the wall..." ALL BECAUSE OF A "CHEAPY STINKY SHOWER HOSE!"

regards,
