Tools and Hardware Reviews of Watts 5YR Premier Filter 5-Year/20,000-Gallon Inline Ice Maker Water FilterCustomer Review: Looks Good - Tastes Good - Smells Good - Pure! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the same one I bought before. And I bought it again.
So obviously I'm pleased with performance. It kills the chlorine smell/taste entirely.
Hopefully it helps with any other stuff that's in there which I can't taste or smell.
The old one worked very well. The water still tastes fine after at least a year.
Replacing ahead of schedule. Mainly because I didn't want to miss out on the deal.
When I complete the installation I will leave the old filter (which will not be expired yet) as a primary stage and the new filter as the secondary stage since it's still good for two or three years.
The water should be ultra pure now! The primary stage should make the new filter last longer since the bulk of contaminants are removed before it gets there. That's my theory at least.
Two stages will help because technically I use it beyond it's specified flow rate of 0.5 gpm. I custom made a simplistic faucet, sort of like the one that's over the spit bowl at the dentist, next to the fridge for drinking water. I just bent a shepards hook in the 1/4" copper tubing and attached it to a little "T" valve. Werks nice! I used a splitter to supply the faucet and the fridge's icemaker. Next fridge will have the faucet in the door but not sure when that will be . . .
Britta is a pain and gets in the way. I never bothered to try it. And look at the size of it, this thing is three times the size of one of those things
It's like 2.5 inches in diameter for perspective. A little bit of trouble to install this and you will not have to worry about changing the filter for a long time. Especially easy if you have a fridge with a built in faucet.
Customer Review: Works For Me Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I had been drinking bottle water for years because our tap water wasn't very tasty; the chlorine taste varied from bad to really bad. I purchased this filter in early 2009, cheap and worth a try... I bought the necessary hoses and adapters to have it go to my ice maker and to a dedicated tap on my kitchen sink. I was actually amazed at the difference the filter made in the tast of our water (your results may be different). No more chlorine taste and the water tasted as good or better than our bottled water. I haven't purchased bottle water since installing the filter. The water and ice from the refrigerator is great (I love crushed ice and soda).
If you're once of those folks who post here about ppm this and ppm that, then I'm sure nothing will satisfy your quest for perfection. Keep looking and spend hundreds of dollars more on a system that probably won't make your water taste better than this filter will. However, if you just want to improve the taste of your water without spending lots of money, try this filter; works for me and I just purchased a spare to put in when the current filter needs replacing....
Customer Review: Easy to Install and Does the Job Removing Clorine Taste Summary: 4 Stars
I use the Watts 5YR filter as a pre-filter for my coffee maker. As far as improving the chlorine taste, it does about the same job as the $10 filter it replaced, but takes up much less room. The filter is simple to install. My coffee maker is designed for an in-line filter. Installation was a snap. I have not noticed any scale buildup on the coffee maker, but then our water is from Lake Michigan and has few dissolved solids.
I have not run into the quality control problems that other buyers mention. The quality control issue does concern me, but I do not know how wide spread it is.
I think that from my experience, if you are looking to remove all volatile organics, small particulates, and specific water-borne contaminants, there are much better filters on the market. However those filters also have a case, wall mount brackets and are more expensive initially. For ease of installation for a coffee maker or refrigerator, this is a good choice.
Customer Review: particles in the water Summary: 1 Stars
We've been buying this filter for many years for our ice maker on the refrigerator. Yes, it says 5 years, but we never expected that and usually replaced it every year. We follow the instructions for running water through it and are used to the shot of black water (from the charcoal) that comes out first. This year, after running more water through it than ever before, we continued to have small particles in the water. These were not air bubbles as they continued to swirl in the water glass. I made a special rig to hook it up directly to an outside hose bib (so we didn't have to use the 'bucket brigade' and ran water through it continuously for 20 minutes. We continued to have the particles.
We removed the filter and connected our city water directly to the refrigerator and the particles were gone. We won't be buying this filter again. Amazon was very nice about the return and we will continue to purchase through them.
Customer Review: I'm glad I purchased this item Summary: 5 Stars
I've had my fridge for over 10 years and have been putting in water filters yearly. Lately the same supplier that told us the filters must be changed on a yearly basis changed the recommendations to six months. Then they changed their prices upward as well. When I saw the 5year filter I nearly fell off my computer chair and ordered one immediately. I received one in a few days and using my existing parts hooked it up in less than 5 minutes. It took about six cupfulls of charcoal cleansing water to clear up the flow and we were in business. I frankly don't know if this filter will last the full five years, but if we still get good water in three years I will be most pleased.Watts 5YR Premier Filter 5-Year/20,000-Gallon Inline Ice Maker Water Filter
