I went to the orange box store to purchase a braided steel supply hose for the refrigerator ice maker, but they were out of stock. All they had were these Floodsafe products made by Watts and the flexible copper tubing, which is a pain to work with.
"Protect against catastrophic water damage!" says the package labeling for the Floodsafe product. Wow, what a great idea! A little extra piece of mind for $10 more than braided steel supply hoses.
I purchased a Flood Safe hose and went home to install the product after reading the instructions. Yes, I read all manufacturer instructions because they supposedly should be more knowledgeable on how their product should be installed. The install went well until I slowly turned on the water supply line valve. I only opened up the valve a quarter turn when the hose popped off and water was shooting everywhere in my basement. Luckily, I was there to turn off the water valve within seconds before the water could ruin anything.
After close inspection, I found the brass ferrule was still connected to the water shut off valve because I made sure that I screwed it on good and tight. I even used thread tape around the shut off valve threads as extra insurance against leaking (even though many say you don't need it). The failure or "weakest link" (pardon the pun. I couldn't help it.) was the area where the hose is crimped behind the ferrule. There is a little copper o- ring that came apart. I tried to push the hose back on over the o ring, but didn't have much luck. The manufacturer must have some machine that does the compression connection. The water pressure at my house is not high and all the water supply lines are connected with braided steel with no problems to date.
This Floodsafe hose went back in the plastic packaging for an immediate refund at the orange box store. Luckily, the blue box store had the old reliable braided steel supply lines I needed.
In summary, this product sounds great in theory since the internal mechanism can sense a surge in water pressure and shut off the water supply. But IMHO you would be better off purchasing the braided steel supply lines that have been on the market for quite some time with no major issues. I believe a recall is in order backed by more R&D.
