Tools and Hardware Reviews of Weller WES51 Analog Soldering Station, Power Unit, Soldering Pencil, Stand and Sponge

Customer Review: Great analog soldering iron.
Summary: 5 Stars

A few years back I bought a digital soldering station from Rat Shack. It said it had replacable tips. You can replace them with as many tips as you want so long as you replace it with the only tip that fits that soldering iron which is huge. So I was working on a little tedious project and decided it was time to buy a new soldering iron that actually had a large selection of tips. After much deliberation I bought this one.

The soldering wand is very ergonomic, light and easy to use. It has a soft narrow grip and a short tip making it easy to control when you are in tight spaces. It heats up in under a minute. The dial goes in 10 degree increments from 350 to 850 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit is very well built and has a sturdy stand with a funnel on the end to help guide the tip in so you aren't banging it against the coil when putting it in the stand.

All in all I think it is a great soldering iron. I don't know what the reviewer who gave it one star was talking about because this one definitely doesn't have an LCD. Perhaps they actually have the WESD51. As far as the lateral pressure goes, I can't think of any soldering project that requires pressure. It's about heat transfer not about forcing the object off the board.

Customer Review: Great Soldering Station
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned Weller products since the 60's w/am old handheld I purchased at Lafayette Electronics in Baton Rouge, LA. This is an upgrade from the orange station Weller makes, I got at Sears, that eventually died. This particular station really does a quick job of heating and the variable switch make it easy to change when different levels of heat are required. I am really pleased with it. My only complaint is that the cord on the wand could be about a foot longer, but that's OK. I just move it closer to my work.

Customer Review: Good soldering station
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for home and hobby use. It meets those needs nicely. I bought several extra tips and some solder removal wicks as well. This is a big improvement over my older pencil solder guns, which had poor temperature control. The vendor (HMC Electronics) has a good web site for ordering and shipped on time.

Customer Review: Great unit without frills or expense.
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know what WES51 the other reviewer used, but the current WES51 does not have a digital readout. It's an analog unit with rheostat. If you don't need bells and whistles this is the iron for you. Readily available tips and so forth and rugged design. We use dozens of these with no problems.

Customer Review: WES-51 Soldering station is a toy.
Summary: 1 Stars

This unit was replacing my 20 year old Weller TC 201 which operated flawlessly for hundreds of hours of use. After a couple hours of use the WES-51 stop heating. I sent it to Weller for warranty repair and they returned it with a new soldering pencil. A month or so later the whole unit just died including the digital display a totally differen't problem. In addition to the breakdown it also has some design flaws being ,the metal barrel which is push fitted into the plastic pencil holder keeps coming loose when any lateral pressure is applied (ie) desoldering.
Its really is a terrible iron , Find a used TC 201 on E-Bay and stay away from this one.
