Tools and Hardware Reviews of Weller WLC100 Soldering Station for Hobbyist and Do-It-YourselferCustomer Review: works very well. Summary: 5 StarsGot this for my b-day, and I love it. It has a sponge built in to the set that works well. It will heat up wires fast enough to solder in about 3-5 seconds on high. The button lights up when turned on. The thing can heat up to soldering temperatures in 30-45 seconds from being cold in a 20 degree F garage. Although, for some reason the screwdriver tip that came with mine was malformed and had some kind of fiber melted into it that must have happened during the manufacturing process. I just clipped it off, but buy different kinds of tips for this thing. (not the one in the "buy these 3 items together" thing, apparently it does not work.) If you are soldering sensitive semiconductors, buy copper alligator clips to use as heatsinks to protect the things you are soldering. this gets a 9/10.
Customer Review: Beware the 3-in-1 package Summary: 1 StarsWeller WLC100 Soldering Station For Hobbyist And Do-It-Yourselfer
I'm writing to warn people not to buy the recommended offer with the conical tip and the desoldering braid, in addition to the Weller WLC100 soldering iron. They come from three destinations with three different shipping fees. The desoldering braid is offered by cs-sales : Educational, Science, Electronics, Toys, Test Equipment & Tools and I feel that they should be avoided at all cost since they're charging nine dollars even for shipping on a 99 cent product. This is criminal activity. In the long run this is deceptive on Amazon.Com's part, since at least when you do the one click purchase, you're not given this information, unless it is buried somewhere else on the page - and as ambassadors for these other companies they have been less than responsible and blatantly deceptive by this ommision. My rating is one star only because they won't put this through without that much, and is based on the package rather than the iron itself.
Customer Review: Nice iron Summary: 5 StarsThis thing is great. The temperature adjustment is consistent. The overall feel is pretty good. I would recommend some 63/37 solder and a finer tip for all around soldering. It's been reliable and durable for months now.
Customer Review: Adequate for non-critical soldering work Summary: 3 StarsI have had one of these for years. While it is a decent little unit for simple kit building and the like, it's not the best choice for jobs where temperature control is important. Although it has a rheostat for adjusting temperature, it's not a true temperature-controlled soldering station and the tip temperature will run away if the hand piece is left unused in it's holder for too long, causing the tinning to oxidize. This means that you will be constantly re-tinning your tip, which gets frustrating after a while.
I would consider this an entry-level unit; if you're just starting out and aren't sure if you're really serious about electronics work, it's not a bad choice. If you're already serious, then you'll want to look for something better. Alas, this means an proportionally higher price, but you do get what you pay for.
Customer Review: Standard of the Industry Summary: 5 StarsThe Weller WLC100 Soldering Station For Hobbyist And Do-It-Yourselfer
is just what it advertises itself to be; an extremely functional tool with variable heat settings and ease of operation. I would highly recommend it to the professional as well as the hobbyist. Weller has long been a trusted name in the industry and the WLC100 has confirmed my trust in their products.
