Tools and Hardware Reviews of Westinghouse 03466 Nanolux 3-Watt G19 LED Bulb, WhiteCustomer Review: Economical LED light Summary: 5 Stars
I'm very happy with my purchase so far. If the bulbs last as long as they claim, they are a bargain.
At 3W I'm not sure what others were expecting in brightness, and although they have a slight bluish color, they work perfectly for my application which is 3 bulb cluster lamp in my front yard used by visitors and as a security light.
I've tried a wide range of the cheaper LED lights over the years and they generally are totally unsatisfactory for anything other than a nightlight. These are the first LED bulbs I've used that I like. As they are on every night the power savings is significant.
Don't buy this light for reading. If you need high detail, it probably won't make you happy. However, if you want a bright nightlight that doesn't use much power and has a long life, this bulb should make you happy. It's great for low level illumination sufficient to walk down a dark hallway, move through your garage, or walk down a concrete path in front of your house. It's uniform illumination is a nice surprise compared to many of the LED lights I've tried to use in the past.
With Amazon Prime, you can order 1 and try it out at little risk. That's what I did. I liked the first so I purchased more...
Customer Review: Useful In Some Applications. Dim, But Worth It! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased one of these from Amazon.com as an experiment to see how these lightbulbs performed. I was fore-warned from other reviews that the bulbs were very blue and pretty dim, and that they were.
I could tell a night-and-day difference between this bulb and an ordinary incandescent. It's (very) noticeably dimmer than the energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs I have around my house.
So why do I like them? Well, an ordinary incandescent bulb might use 60 watts of power and this thing uses 3. Even 60-watt replacement compact fluorescent bulbs use about 17 watts of power, so these bulbs even make other "energy saving" bulbs look like power hogs by comparison.
The key consideration before buying is where you think relatively dim bulbs might make sense for your needs. For me, I have a porch light and two lights on either side of my garage that run all night. The light is enough to illuminate that outdoor area well enough, and since the lights run all night, using these light bulbs saves quite a bit of juice!
My recommendation would be to use these bulbs as dim porch lights or maybe hallways, but use compact florescent bulbs indoors if you need more lighting.
Customer Review: This bulb is DIM, but *was* PERFECT for a nightlight on our stairs! Summary: 1 Stars
We've been using this LED light bulb for several months now. We have a tri-level home with a lamp in the front hall at the base of the both flights of stairs. This bulb is PERFECT as a nightlight in the lamp to keep the stairs safe for us at night, especially for my husband who's partially disabled and always forgets to turn on a light before navigating the stairs. The blueish cast looks really nice through the glass in our front door, as well. I LOVE this bulb, but there's no way it would replace a 15w CFL or 60w incandescent bulb.
Nov 2010 UPDATE: Previously I gave this bulb a FIVE STAR review despite being seriously dim. I now give this bulb a ZERO star review. It's been in use less than two years now (purchased here on Amazon Dec 2008) and the bulb has FAILED. It's now "deader than a door nail" at less than 17,000 hours, or less than half of the reported life expectancy. I've replaced this very dim 3 watt LED with an 8 watt CFL - and we're much happier since now there's enough light to make our stairs safe for our family. I realize that's nearly 3 times the wattage.. but by far more than 3 times the amount of light.
Customer Review: I really WANTED to like these Summary: 1 Stars
We have recessed lighting along our stairwell, and these lights end up staying on 24/7. Currently there are 5w CFLs installed, and I thought this would be an ideal application for LED lighting. The CFL's are about half again too bright for what we need, so I figured the LED's might have a chance.
Not even close. At most they cast about a 2-3' halo of light, and dim light at that. Beyond that radius, not much help at all. As a rough figure of merit, I do not believe they cast as much light as a candle. They are also a very blue light-but are so dim, it really doesn't matter.
i expected some compromises with LED lighting, but these are just ridiculous. I assume that LED's that cost 10x as much as these might be useful, but at current electric rates, the payback is about 25 years.
I am hard pressed to come with an application where these might make sense. Given the duty cycle of a refrigerator light, the payback is probably 25 years as well. They might make a nice nightlight-except for the bulb base being a standard size. I don't think the color lends itself to mood lighting either.
Customer Review: Not ideal for a refrigerator light, but fine for a feezer light. Summary: 3 Stars
I bought one of these, hoping to use it as a high-efficiency low-heat alternative to the incandescent bulbs in the refrigerator. (Why make the fridge cool down those bulbs -- and they get hot!). I thought it would be a good fit, because instant-on, no-mercury, and low waste-heat are all good for a refrigerator-light. Also, the physical size of this bulb is about the same as the existing incandescent light in our refrigerator.
However, the light was too blue, too thin, and too dim to achieve girlfriend-approval -- all of the nicely-prepared food that she put in the fridge for us just didn't look right until I changed the bulb back to the incandescent bulb. I moved the LED bulb to the freezer, where the thin blue light looks appropriate.
If you're looking for a good general-purpose LED bulb, I'd recommend C.Crane's PAR38 bulb. It's a spotlight, and it won't fit in the fridge -- but it does work very nicely in the light-fixture on the back porch -- and the instant-on nature of the bulb makes it very preferable to a CFL in the middle of winter. I'm going to write a full review for this one next.
