Tools and Hardware Reviews of Whirlaway 291 1/2 Horsepower Waste Disposer

Customer Review: Got my money's worth.
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered this unit as a replacement for the original in my new home. The old one lasted only 2 years as it was installed incorrectly by the builder (mounting ring was upside down, gaskets and seals were in the wrong order), causing the mounting flange (plastic) to crack and leak the contents under our sink. It came down to price, as it would cost me 35 dollars to order the replacement parts, or 52 to get a brand new (and slightly upgraded) version. The installation was straight forward, and though it could be done by one person, it helped to have a second set of hands (my wife). Also helpful was that I was replacing a virtually identical unit, so no plumbing was involved. The bonus was 1 day shipping for the price of ground, due to my proximity to the shipper. Ordered Friday, picked and pulled Sunday, shipped Monday, received on Tuesday. Very pleased with the service of the merchant. Overall, the unit does the job we need, which is light-weight disposal, as there are only 2 of us in the house, and most of our food scraps go into the composter in the garden. Hopefully, with the correct installation, this one will last longer. So far, so good. I would have given 5 stars, but the plastic mounting flange does give me pause as to its durability.

Customer Review: Love this Product!
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I just love this product. We bought it because our old Insinkerator was leaking and just wasn't grinding very well anymore. Besides that, I wanted a smaller disposal because my paper towel rack is mounted on the inside door of the sink base and I wanted to be able to use the jumbo rolls of paper towels.

I searched the internet, found this model, read all the reviews, saw that the price was right ($44.99 + $16.99 S&H), and decided to go for it. I'm so glad I did. This machine is a little powerhouse that grinds quickly and efficiently (even canteloupe rinds). Because of it's smaller size, I can fit my jumbo rolls of paper towels and more cleaning supplies, etc. under the sink than I could before.

The only drawback was since neither my husband nor I are do-it-yourselfers, we had to hire a plumber and it took him about two hours to install (he said is was different from any other disposal he had installed, whatever that means). So that was a little pricey but it was worth every cent. I would buy this product again in a heartbeat.

Customer Review: Garbage Successfully Disposed
Summary: 5 Stars

This is smaller, quieter, and more powerful than the old Badger that came with my house, which had started to leak due to age. The collar style was different, which caused quite a learning curve for me (beginner) with quite a bit of frustration, Once I figured out it could not attach to my old screw-on pressure ring, and replaced the existing faucet exit, I was much happier.

Incidentally, when I was taking out the old one, the metal trap in the sink tore off in my hands like old cardboard, and I had to get involved in that, too. (now that you mention it, maybe that was what was really leaking?) So there's something to look out for. If you too get involved in this coincidental issue, take a picture of the existing sink connections with you to the hardware store, there are multiple variations on how the trap connects. Test fit the connections first, and make sure you understand where all the screw on rings are supposed to end up before you attach anything to anything else.

I am sill happy to switch this thing on every time. A+.

Customer Review: Compact power
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a nice size unit particularly when wanting to have more undersink storage
Unit is very compact and has a innovative mounting collar that makes installing and removing unit
much easier.

It has sufficient power for nearly anything you feed into it and reasonably quite
This unit was installed during our new home construction and now has had eight years
of trouble free service. The 1/2 hp motor uses less power without any apparent loss of
grinding ability. The blade design reduces impeller jams,(The blades slide inside the impeller unit).
I have had only one occurrence of the unit jamming ,a quick insertion of a wooden dowel into the unit and rotating
the dowel around the rim and it freed right up immediately with no further problems.

Others mentioned models that do not include power cord so that needs to be verified
when you order it.Ours has a 2 1/2 foot cord that plugged into the standard 110 outlet

Customer Review: Just great for regular folks like us
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this item after checking the "big home improvement place" in our town. The price was WAY below what was offered at the retail store, and Consumer Reports ranked this item high. The real selling feature for us was that it was smaller that our other waste disposer (freed up some under the sink space) AND works perfectly since we are not dumping SCHOOLS OF WHOLE FISH down the disposal. I mean, really: food scraps and small peelings are fine. We usually use our composter. Also relatively quiet compared to the other disposer -- which sounded a lot like something grinding up a really large thing (I asked: "What DID we put down there?"). So, make a list of your your disposal habits and make the decision. This one's worth it.
