Tools and Hardware Reviews of Refrigrator Automatic Ice Maker Kit

Customer Review: It Works
Summary: 4 Stars

When our ice maker stopped working (lots of grinding noises and no ice), we decided we needed to act. After the basic online troubleshooting, the obvious became clear - it was broke.
More online research showed there were some replacements out there. I chose the Amazon one for both price (reasonable) and security. While I was fairly sure this was the one we needed, with Amazon I felt i had an option if something was wrong.
Turns out it was fairly easy to replace, though there was a plastic part that had to be trimmed that was not in the instructions. But looking at the old one and new one it became clear. Once installed it has worked great.

Customer Review: ice maker installation
Summary: 5 Stars

Read the instructions three times. Twenty minutes later I had the ice maker installed. About two hours later it started making ice. It's been a little over a month since being installed and it works great. This is the second ice maker I've installed in my whirlpool refrigerator. The first one cost just under $100.00 ten years ago. Now it is $130.00. This one cost $49.95 and it is the same idenical ice maker. Got $40.00 knocked off for getting an Amazon credit card. Thanks Amazon. Total cost $9.95. No shipping, no taxes. Like I said before, read the instructions three times. It will be then easier to install.

Customer Review: The hardest part was getting the old one out
Summary: 5 Stars

The hardest part was getting the old one out because you can't see the screws because of where they are located. So you have to feel with your fingers and contort yourself a little to get some leverage. A good nut driver is the way to go. Also, make sure you don't have some liquid water in the old one before you start. I didn't check and should have. Once I cleaned up the mess I created and got the new one installed, I heard my first ice drop in about 2 hours or so. It's been perfect ever since. Oh, it did arrive a couple of days before I expected it to. I'm very happy and satisfied.

Customer Review: Give it 24hrs
Summary: 4 Stars

If you buy this part, make sure you give it 24 hours to work. I was expecting it to start working right away as soon as I installed it. I was very frustrated when I didn't see the dial start to spin when installed. I actually took the part out and sent it back thinking it was defective. Well it turns out the part has an internal thermostat that has to get cold to the right temperature in order to kick the icemaker on. They failed to leave out this very important bit of information. The common lay person would never know this. So don't send it back, give it 24hrs to work!

Customer Review: Everything you need -- easy to install as a replcement unit
Summary: 5 Stars

My existing ice maker was leaking and needed a replacement -- this filled the bill. The price from Amazon was 1/3 the price that Sears was quoting!

If you do this yourself, remember that it takes time to make ice, so don't get impatient thinking it isn't working. Make sure you check the timer adjustment -- just look into the alignement hole described in the instructions provided.

I also took the opportunity to change my water filter, and I noticed the difference in my crystal clear new ice cubes.
