Tools and Hardware Reviews of Whirlpool 4396510P KitchenAid Quarter-Turn Cyst-Reducing Side-by-Side Refrigerator Water Filter, 2-Pack

Customer Review: beneficial fluoride
Summary: 3 Stars

"Retains beneficial fluoride while still maintaining filtration quality"

No fridge water filter gets rid of fluoride, as fluoride particles are especially small. As for if fluoride is actually beneficial, I doubt it. Commercialism tells us that fluoride prevents cavities without backing such claims with qualified studies (the only study they did that they quote broke all study guidelines, yet few question it).
Keep in mind too, that Europe is ahead of us for once: fluoridation of water is illegal there, just for being forced medication. And all of us who are allergic to fluoride, or react with stained teeth suffer to pay extra for the extremely expensive filters that get rid of such tiny stuff. Not to mention that osteoporosis is still on the rise in the US and nobody knows why... but the cows south of the aluminum factories (where flouride used to be dumped as a waste product) lost so much bone structure they died and the farmers had to be paid off. The aluminum companies were happy when the government agreed to buy their waste to dilute in All our water instead of just downstream.
Anyway, I hate it when companies claim nonsense. This is like claiming a facet is special for letting the water through.

Customer Review: What it removes from your water
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used this filter and find this to be a very good filter for this cartridge type.
These little filters cannot remove everything from your refrigerator water system, you'll need a high quality reverse osmosis system for that.
Recently I found a website* that lists the actual impurities that this 4396510 filter removes, I quote:

* 99.35% of Lead at pH 6.5
* 99.31% of Lead at pH 8.5
* 96.70% of Mercury at pH 6.5
* 91.20% of Mercury at pH 8.5
* 99.93% of Asbestos
* 96.30% of Benzene
* 99.70% of P-Dichlorobenzene
* 99.99% of Cysts
* 85.60% of Atrazine
* 92.96% of Toxaphene
* 93.06% of 2,4-D
* 97.60% of Chlorine
* 99.30% of Turbidity
* 99.90% of Particulates (Class I)

As with all built-in refrigerator water filters, the 4396510 does not remove Fluoride.
The 4396510 cartridge is tested and certified by NSF International to meet or exceed NSF/ANSI Standards 42 & 53.
The other model cartridge (4396508) does not filter quite as much as the '10' model.

Customer Review: Improved pricing, less headaches than "generics"
Summary: 5 Stars

A few things I've noticed:

The brand name filters are getting a little more affordable in this tough economy, which is nice because I'm generic girl, wantonly buying third party inkjet cartridges and so on. I don't have brand loyalty per se, but will say that these cost about the same as the filters at my local hardware store that are 1) generic and 2) a lower tier in terms of what they filter. Also, the generics, I've found to my sorrow, can be tough to install and remove. They don't always quite fit, or at least not as easily as the brand product.

But things are always changing, and it always pays to comparison shop recent reviews when buying consumables, and especially when considering a new brand or vendor.

Customer Review: ok, but installation instructions not complete
Summary: 4 Stars

We bought the OEM at Sears for about $44 + tax, but returned it the next day when we found these here at a much better price. and ordered them. They came right away and seem to be ok. BUT--on the box where the installation instructions are there is NO reminder to take off and save the end cap from the old filter. Naturally I forgot, removed the old one and put the new one in. It did not look right, I saw what the problem was and managed to remove the new one, put on the end cap, and reinstall it. No harm, no foul, but just be careful when you install one of these. Also there was only 1 sticky to place in the refrigerator to let you know the installation/replacement dates---there should have been 2, one for each filter.

Customer Review: Water flow is the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

The main reason I wanted to leave this review is to emphasize how great the water flow-through
rate is for this filter. This filter was a replacement for the one on our Whirlpool fridge that had a model number ending in 08. This one (ending in 10P) also fits our fridge (same size and shape as the old one) and the greatest thing is that the water dispenser now has greater water pressure than it has ever had. No more waiting forever to fill a coffee pot carafe! Water tastes great and the cyst reducing feature is another bonus. What else is there to want from a filter?

If this model is indicated as a replacement for what you have -then this two-pack is the way to go.
