We had one free sample of this for buying our Maytag Performance series HE front loader. I didn't use it until 16 months later. I didn't know how important it was to use this once a month to keep things "fresh" until month 16 came and I was wondering WHY the washer had an odor. I left the door open some of the time to air out, but not all the time. Like everyone else, I tried the hottest cycle a couple times, a little bit more soap, and left the door open after ever wash to try and get the odor out. It was only after the fact, that I read the manual and googled about "Maytag washer odors" and then I used the sample.
It worked the first time and got the odor out, but after a few days, the odor came back. I'm using a 2nd one in about 5 days hoping my neglect will save a call to the plumber. I read they might have to do some "internal" cleaning and that it can cost $150 to $200. Eesh...if I would have known the importance of using this earlier.....
I still recommend this product to keep things fresh. It was operator error who got it to this point anyway.
BTW, they sell this at my home depot for $7.99 plus tax. Here it's $8.54 with free prime shipping. I had a 10% HD coupon so I got them at HD this time. Someone said it was $6.98 at Lowes for the same 3-tablet pack. HAPPY CLEANING!

Ok, I'm back for a follow up. After the 2nd tablet, it still had an odor. After googling some more, you have to make sure you wipe the inside of the dryer near the door seal. Build-up can occur there. The first place was the actually door...get a Clorox wipe (or something similar) to get the grime off worked. The next spot was the rubbery part in between the door and the drum. You have to pull back the rubber circular part on some models and make sure no little socks or items got stuck there. There can be grimy areas in there too. Wipe thoroughly with a Clorox wipe. Since wiping everything down, I've used Affresh once a month and the odor has since gone...saving me money from calling a plumber! :)
