Tools and Hardware Reviews of Whitmor Over-The-Door Shoe Rack, White, 36-PairCustomer Review: Love This Shoe Rack! Summary: 5 Stars
I believe this is my first review on any product I've purchased from Amazon . . . an indication of how impressed I am! The Whitmor rack was a recent replacement for an over-the-door wire shoe rack. I had slowly transitioned from shoes with a narrow, not-so-wide footprint to more casual, wider shoes - the wire "hangers" for each shoe were close enough together that they were crowding the shoes and causing them to rub against each other. I decided to research what else was out there and found this to be a good alternative, keeping in mind that I probably wouldn't be able to fit 3 pair on each shelf, but it would still allow more pairs than my previous rack (a good thing, as I LOVE shoes).
I received this in perfect condition, and also read prior reviews that a rubber mallet and a hard surface were important. Even though my dear husband offered to put it together, I tackled it myself. First of all, DO find yourself a hard service and pound those steel bars into the sides with a mallet - important to get them in all the way. After both sides were attached, also using the mallet, it hung on the back of my closet door just fine. I had done some pre-measuring prior to purchasing, and it was about the same width as my old rack, just longer - the hanging hardware also turned out to be similar. The only issue I noticed after hanging was that it seemed a bit "tweeked" or twisted, not laying flat against the door. It does come with some door pads that prevent scratching and also allow the rack to "stick" to the door, but I decided not to use them. I've had this rack about two months now, and am very pleased. It still doesn't lie flush against the door (about 1.5" out from the door at the bottom), but I don't find that to be a big consideration. I have two pair on each shelf (a couple have an additional shoe at one end), and the weight of the shoes keeps the rack firmly situated in one place - I can open and close the door without the rack or shoes moving at all. I believe my old rack held 18 pair of shoes - even with limiting myself to 2 pair on each rack, it holds 22 pair. And no more crushed, tightly squeezed together shoes - I would definitely purchase this again. Hmmm, maybe I should see if we have another available door in our house suitable for a second rack . . .
