Tools and Hardware Reviews of Wiremold C210 White Cordmate II KitCustomer Review: Great going on, terrible coming off Summary: 3 Stars
First, the good: These cable covers are simple to mount and function well. They are easy to open with a screw driver or even a pen, and they are even easier to snap shut. They aren't the roomiest, so you should know that in advance. I was able to run an ethernet cable, a coax RF cable, and two speaker wires without much of an issue. However, it was pretty packed and doubt it would hold more. The adhesive is quite strong, so you won't need to worry much about how hard you tug on the covers while tucking away your wires. The adhesive also brings me to...
The bad: I'm willing to admit that I didn't fully read the instructions that came with the product, so my problems may have been addressed and warned against. However, upon removal, these things are a nightmare. Trying to pull them off would almost always tear the paint and upper layer of drywall right off. When it did manage to come off without a chunk of the wall, it left a sticky residue that was incredibly difficult to clean (I tried warm soapy water, and even Goo Gone). In the end, I used a utility knife to score the edges, and then just ripped off strips of drywall. Then I had to patch each channel, sand, and paint. If I had known I would be moving only 6 months after installation, I would have never used these cable covers.
In the end, I have to give their function more weight than their difficult removal. They work great, and they install super easily. If you are not planning on removing them in any short manner of time, I would recommend them. However, if you are a renter or know you will move in a year or less, you may want to find another product.
Customer Review: For those not wanting to tear up drywall immediately Summary: 5 Stars
I am a wire nazi and like all my A/V cables run neat. However, after my new LCD was mounted I had a power cable and HDMI cable ruining the look. I did not want to rip through drywall, route around fireplace vents, drill through 6 studs, and refinish drywall to make it look nice. Maybe one day I will, but not yet. I posted images of the before and after condition.
Wiremold Cordmate II was an ideal solution:
1) Inexpensive
2) Easy to install
3) Very pratical and funtional
4) Looks good
5) Individual pieces available (elbows, corners, etc.)
Install took maybe 1 hour total to plan, measure, cut, and paint (20 minutes of actual work; 40 for paint drying). I painted before install and found that applying paint with a small brush and then using a small, dry roller gave a very finished look. Also make sure your cables are plenty long enough (with some alpha factor) before installing. Do not plan on running a ton of cables through this version - power, HDMI, and maybe a coaxial would be it.
I was very skeptical about the cordmate's ability to hold in corner with thick cables. I had an inside and outside 90 degree elbow within 3 inches which is a lot of force to hold. But the double sided tape is very strong and holding very good.
Perhaps the only minor downside would be ability to add or change cables. It does open, but it takes some pressure. So make sure to feed all wires needed first before taping to wall.
Overall, this wire nazi is very impressed and would highly recommend.
Customer Review: It is what it is. Summary: 4 Stars
It's a pretty simple system that does just what it says. The channels in which the wires sit are adequate for maybe 3 to 5 wires, depending on what type they are, and seem fairly durable. The elbow connectors seems less durable and like they maybe liable to pop off if place somewhere where they may get bumped (not a problem for me). My primary complaint is that the assortment of connectors may be insufficient for many applications if you're trying to navigate around a series of corners. I wasn't able to take the path I preferred on account of the limited connector options (I could have used more of one type of connector and none of the others). But I knew what I was getting when I ordered it.
And a suggestion re: the adhesive backing: Some reviewers have claimed that it is very difficult to remove should you ever desire to do so. I can see how this would be the case. The peel-and-stick adhesive certainly looks as if it's intended to be permanent, which is probably a good thing. Since I may want to remove my Wiremold in a few years and don't relish the idea of scraping several feet of adhesive off my wall, I opted to score the adhesive a couple times every foot or two, so that I could remove only a one- or two-inch piece of the backing. Most wires aren't that heavy, and a four foot run of this probably doesn't need four feet of adhesive to support it (especially when it's placed vertically). So only exposing an inch or two of adhesive every foot or two will hopefully save me trouble down the road and should be plenty secure in the meantime.
Customer Review: Very simple to use! Room for more than one cord! Summary: 5 Stars
I needed to run a cord in an obvious place, and didn't want it hanging there looking ugly and being a tripping hazard, so I found this product. It consists of 2 self-adhesive backed strips and various connectors (to turn corners.) I could have used more outside corner pieces for my particular use, but modified one of the leftover pieces with a razor blade. You just cut the strips to the length you need, peel the paper off the adhesive strip and push it to the wall. I didn't even use a hacksaw (mostly because I was too lazy to go all the way to the basement to get it!)..I just used a razor blade.
I did find it easier to open the channel (if you squeeze it a little the channel opens easily), slip in the cord (there is room for more than one electrical cord...maybe a coax cable and one/two more if you need tv cable), then push the whole thing onto the wall. I didn't paint mine, but it would probably be easier to do that before hanging them, as well. The connector pieces don't have adhesive backing (wish they did) but they just snap onto the channel strips. If you need more bendable strips (these are just straight), they also sell a flexible channel here: Wiremold C110 White Cordmate Kit.
The product works well and probably could be screwed inside the channel if the adhesive ever seems to fail (or if you want a more permanent application.) Overall, a very nice idea for a common problem of too many loose cords!
Customer Review: great product Summary: 4 Stars
This thing is great. Its a nice white color that doesn't draw attention and I can easily insert any wire into it. Unlike some wire protectors you don't have to run the wire though (which is impossible with wires with fat ends). You just open it up and snap it close and it looks seamless when finished. I got mine from Menards and it didn't come with the inside elbow although this one shows it does. So I went back and got an elbow for the corner. Here's where I made the mistake. Unlike some cord protectors of this design this one doesn't require it to be screwed to the wall. However, the adhesive on the back is strong stuff!. If you remove shortly after placing it (should it not be completely straight or whatever reason) you'll be ok. But after it sits for about an hour you're liable to rip off some paint or even sheetrock covering like I did. So please if you buy this and plan on laying it on sheetrock walls plan carefully! Once you lay it down you don't go back without a bit of patching.
