Tools and Hardware Reviews of HEARTLAND 21000 Dryer Vent Closure

Customer Review: Works better than expected!
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading the reviews I took a chance and bought one to see for myself. The installation didn't take as long as I thought it would. I had no problems at all. I spray painted it white with spray paint made for plastic. Before installation I did buy a tube of silicone caulking to ensure a tight seal on the interior as well as the exterior of the vent. My exterior is stucco, and I had no problems with any of the supplied hardware drilling into the exterior of the house. I even pre drilled some holes which really wasn't even necessary. After installation was complete, I squeezed a small bead of caulking around any possible gaps to make it air tight. It worked! I let the caulking set, then took off the top cap of the vent while my wife turned on the dryer inside. The round cap inside the vent flew up in the air and out of the vent. Obviously this meant I had a pretty good seal. The next morning I opened up our laundry room door and noticed a pretty big difference in temperature as compared to the ice box feeling we used to get when going into our laundry room. To us, it is worth the small amount of money to make our laundry room less drafty and so cold like it used to be. I don't know how some people have such a hard time installing something so basic, and complain about having to squeeze out a little caulking from a tube. Don't believe the negativity. if your laundry room is like ours was, buy it. It's not going to heat the room but will definitely help keep it warmer in the cold season and keep the bugs out. We're very happy with the purchase.

Customer Review: What a Difference
Summary: 5 Stars

Our laundry dryer vent was an old aluminum flap that just wouldn't shut and cold air was the norm in our laundry room. We read all the reviews on this product and decided that most of the complaints were due to folks not wanting to do a little install work. We purchased our Heartland dryer vent, painted it, installed it (with a little tweak) and we couldn't be more surprised at how the laundry room is now warmer, an additional bonus is that it's quieter - no more outside noise.
For us, we simply pulled off the old flap, did some insulating around the existing area since the stucco hole was a little wider than the vent tube, and our 55 year old house has no insulation in the walls. We also had slightly uneven stucco so to attempt to make the new vent as secure as it could be, we took rubber window insulation and placed that around the base of the unit where it connects to the house, screwed it in place, and used paintable caulking to further seal the connection. In total, the install project might have taken 45 minutes. Well worth the level of comfort we now enjoy.
For those who are not savy with a screwdriver, you might want to stear clear. But for those who have a bit of comon sense, this will certainly improve the level of comfort in your laundry room.

Customer Review: Heartland dryer vent enclosure
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good dryer vent enclosure once installed. I had 2 issues with the installation.

The first is that the mating surfaces between the existing dryer vent in the wall of the house is the same size as the flange opening to the vent enclosure, both about 4 inches in diameter so you can't easily fit one into the other the 1/2" that is required. I suppose you could duct tape the two together, but it may be a little off and is a sloppy installation technique, at least to me. I went out and purchased a crimping tool from Malco at the Home Depot, crimped the dryer vent end from the house, and then joined it to the flange. This worked well.

The second issue, although not real serious, is that the six included screws were very short. Four of them worked fine in attaching the flange to the wood block I had up against the Hardy Plank siding, but I needed two much longer screws to attach the unit to the siding on the top of the vent enclosure.

The whole process took a little over an hour. There's no question this is a much more air tight installation then the old metal flapper I had installed and also should keep birds, vermin, and insects out as well. Time will tell.

Customer Review: Excellent external dryer vent
Summary: 5 Stars

The HEARTLAND 21000 Dryer Vent replaces my old light, aluminum flap sort of encased by an aluminum triangle/box where the flap was just hanging there and opening and closing in the breeze.

While installing the new vent, I was amazed how much cold air was rushing out of the 4-inch hole, and this new vent takes care of that, and no way rodents or bugs can crawl in, too, and the wind won't open it. There's no cold air rushing out of there now.

When the dryer is on, a small inverted plastic cup is blown upwards, and the hot air is directed downward and out the baffles. When the dryer is off, the cup settles down and seals the opening well enough that there's no more cold air escaping, and I bet in the winter, no hot air escapes either, except when the dryer is running, of course.

This thing promises to pay for itself in short order. The biggest problem is making sure it's level, and on slanting clapboard, I glued a couple of popsicle sticks for shims rather than cut away the clapboard. Then I screwed it down tight and caulked the edges and all is just fine. It looks cooler, too. I'll probably paint it when I get around to it, but I think that's optional.

Customer Review: Keeps the cold out
Summary: 5 Stars

When we remodeled our laundry room, a typical dryer vent was installed, and the walls were insulated against the fierce NW winds off Lake Ontario. The first time the temps went below zero, my washing machine pipes froze and I had to thaw them out by running my gas dryer for an hour and trickling water into the utility sink! When it happened a second time, I was totally frustrated. And, any time the wind blew, the flapper would make so much noise we couldn't sleep. We eventually put a plastic bag on the outside vent and I had to remember to remove it every time I used the dryer--which was dangerous, obviously, and a pain in the neck. Then I found this product online, ordered it and installed it. (We had to screw it into our vinyl siding.) This past winter was brutal and the pipes never froze, and the inside of my dryer remained room temperature instead of freezing. Plus, there's nothing to flap in the wind. I can say this product saved my pipes, my marriage, and perhaps my life.
