Tools and Hardware Reviews of HEARTLAND 21000 Dryer Vent Closure

Customer Review: Works...but maybe not as easy to install
Summary: 4 Stars

Within minutes we could detect a rise in laundry room temperature (it is February) after I installed a vent closure for both the dryer AND for a shower vent from the same room. That more than offsets any of the complications with the installation, to me. The end of the hard or flex vent pipes exiting the house do not "neatly" fit with the female receiving end (against the house) of these closure units, at least neither of mine did. A descriptive of possible options - Plan B, Plan C, etc. - would have been helpful upfront. It took a while to adapt then secure the unit to the pipes then to the house. In other words, this may not be a 10 minute installation effort. Be prepared to shim the siding a bit and to have to "customize" the feeding vent pipe into the closure unit.

But winters will be warmer and summers will be cooler in that room...amen.

Customer Review: Works great.

This vent solved my problem. In an attempt to prevent field mice from entering the original vent, I had installed a wire mesh baffle in the vent tube, plus an external wire mesh cage covering the small vent hood. The mesh kept the mice out, but still, lint would periodically build up, making the dryer inefficient and requiring a periodic dismantling in order to clean it out. This new plastic vent did away with all that. The vent is completely closed when the dryer is off, therefore there is no rodent penetration. When the dryer is on, exhaust pressure opens the vent. Result: No lint build up, no mice, dryer works better. The plastic housing is stronger than I expected. After a light sanding I painted the housing to match the stucco of our house, so the vent is unobtrusive.

Customer Review: A good design, with some flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the second floating dryer vent cap that I have purchased. The first had a hinged cap with a catch and the plastic in the hinge broke, rendering the unit useless. The design of this product seems more sensible, with the cap just fitting down over the vent. Both the floating vent caps that I have tried do an excellent job of keeping animals and cold air out of your dryer outlet hoses, although their bulkiness makes them less than unobtrusive on the side of your house.

Note added 3 months later: Unlike the previous floating cap vent I had, this unit does not trap any of the "bleed-through lint" that gets past the dryer filter and instead, blows it all over my deck where it has made a HUGE mess. I revise my evaulation to 3 stars.

Customer Review: Effective!!
Summary: 4 Stars

This product is as claimed, effective in stopping the reverse flow of air back into the dryer duct. By forcing the air to be capped on top of the exit tube, it relies on a greater gravity to rest and cap the tube, rather than the standard hinged flap, which can clog in an semi-open position.

I haven't had this in operation long enough to withness the extent of lint that is trapped in this product, but it easily accessable for cleaning.

The one dentriment is that the plastic must be painted to prevent staining and breakdown of the plastic body, by excessing sunlight. Kind of pain. Hopefully future versions will be issued in sufficient white coloring so as to prevent sun exposure damage.

Customer Review: It really does work!

So glad other reviewers were right...this thing has made a world of difference in our laundry room. I wish I could say I noticed utility costs dropping, but our 1960 home is like the Titanic here in Minnesota...one thing at a time and eventually we may be able to stop the leaking! But this was an instant big improvement...no more cold floor or cold air in there...especially nice when a load in the drier has an item you want to wear but the clothes sat in their all night in January. Installation was a snap, but make sure you have the proper drill bits for going through the exterior of your house and don't forget to use caulk or foam adhesive to seal the holes you make!
