Tools and Hardware Reviews of Wolfcraft 4525404 Drill Guide Attachment for 1/4-Inch or 3/8-Inch DrillsCustomer Review: Wolfcraft 4525 Drill Guide Review & Chuck Replacement Summary: 5 Stars
This highly portable Wolfcraft 4525 drill guide is indeed quite handy. I frequently use it for Forstner bits, spade bits, and, where precision beyond handheld is required, even regular bits into wood or metal. However, one of the first things I did was replace the keyed chuck with a keyless one (my preference, not a necessity). The drill guide comes with a 3/8" Jacobs chuck fitting a 3/8" x 24 threaded spindle, locked into place with a reverse-thread screw. That was replaced with a Jacobs 3/8" keyless chuck (model #30354), purchased right on this (amazon) website. You can find 1/2" chucks to fit this spindle, but they're really quite unwieldy in this tool.
Actually replacing the chuck was easy enough. There are videos on video websites describing how, but here is a synopsis. Disassemble the drill guide to allow easier access to the chuck assembly. Place that assembly (part where you attach drill) upright in a bench press, open the chuck fingers fully, and locate the retaining screw inside. Using a well-fitting screwdriver (avoid stripping screw head), remove that screw. This reverse-threaded screw removes in a clockwise direction - the direction most screws go in. Some effort is required.
Once that screw is out, place a large hex key or similar into the chuck and tighten the fingers. Chuck removes in the normal counterclockwise direction. Using some effort (and, if needed, a tap with a mallet to break chuck loose), twist that chuck off the spindle. Clean the spindle while it's accessable and install the new chuck. Make sure each part is tightened firmly as you go. I did not use a thread-locking compound (not initially used either) to allow easier removal later once this drill guide wears out and/or I decide to use the chuck elsewhere.
This drill guide has now served me well for several months. However, unlike a drill press, this handheld guide cannot do the job alone. Instead, the idea is for both tool and hands to work together. Once the guide is properly positioned over the work (with clamps if preferred), one must still gingerly guide the bit onto the exact mark for drilling. Afterwards, it's just a matter of following the guide through the remaining hole. Avoid the tendency to completely guide the drill yourself (as I initially did), fighting the guide for control (which is sure to break something). Let the guide do most of the work, with your help only as needed (tough grains of wood, etc). With practice, one can obtain reasonably precision results. This tool can also go places a regular drill press cannot.
