Tools and Hardware Reviews of Woods 59377 Digital 7-Day Lamp/Appliance Timer with 2 Outlets, Up to 8 On/Off Settings per day and Battery Back UpCustomer Review: Great if they work... Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered three of these timers. They had all the features I deemed important: autp-recharging backup battery (didn't want to have to replace batteries), override button, digital (those analog ones are impossible to get any level of precision; the digital allows for exact time setting down to the minute), and 1-minute increments in the settings. This is useful for things you just need to power-cycle periodically such as a home network modem/router to help keep it fresh. Taking down for 1 min once a day/week helps.
With that in mind, I ordered three and upon receipt... only 1 worked. I pressed every button, even tried the reset button, but the display wouldn't let go of the entire display lit up (all 8's, etc.) Nothing worked. Finally, out of desperation, I took one of them apart; this finally reset it and it works fine now. The second I had to charge for a while (even though it had a display) and this allowed the reset button to work.
In summary... the timers are great, but only after you get them working. For a while, I thought I had DOAs and would have to send them back.
Customer Review: Fried after 3 months Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this outlet timer based on the previous review and was VERY happy when I received it. It had all the features I wanted:
1. two grounded outlets
2. room so when it is plugged into a 2-plug outlet, you can still use
the second outlet.
3. very easy to program
4. battery backup (we have frequent power outages)
5. quiet operation (the mechanical ones I find quite loud).
In my searching, there is nothing else on the market that has these features. I also purchased one of the cheaper,non-grounded Woods models.
Everything worked beautifully until our last power outage. I noticed
the lights did not turn off. I pulled the timer out and it was fried.
When I shook it, black carbon came out and it rattled. For the record,
I don't think we had a surge as no other electronics in the house had
any problems, including two computers. It could be that I just bought
a lemon. The other Woods outlet is working fine.
Customer Review: Works exactly as advertised. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this Woods 7-Day Digital Timer to control warmrails (bath towel warming) in the master bathroom in my home. Without the timer the warmrails worked 24 hours a day, which cost about $17 per month or $200 per year. The timer keeps the warmrails powered only when we may need to use warm towels, i.e., early in the morning on Monday-Friday, early in the evening on Sunday-Thursday, later in the morning on Saturday and Sunday, later in the evening on Friday and Saturday. The rest of the time nobody needs warm towels, and the warmrails are powered off, which saves about 70% in electricity costs, i.e., it saves $140 per year. Considering how little I paid for this timer, the savings in electric bills have already paid off for the purchase of this timer. The internal clock in this timer is very accurate, and, what is most impressive, it keeps ticking and remembers all settings during power outages, which take place rather often in the area where I live.
Customer Review: Great intentions, terrible in reality Summary: 1 Stars
At first I thought this unit was great. The setup was pretty intuitive and it'd handle exactly the programming that I needed. I setup my appliance on this expecting to find it turned off 3 hours later. To my shock and horror, I found the device on 10 hours later with the timer displaying all 8888 for the time, as well as every other LCD element lit. Unplugging and replugging did not fix anything, and actually proved it was further broken! The battery backed-up clock/timer feature was also not working (although it was working great out of the box, and as I setup the unit). Now something is rattling around inside the unit and its display is still just full of garbage as it passes power (a *SAFE* unit would fail to OFF, not ON). The quality control is certainly not up to par. My appliance was rated at a quarter of the capacity of this 15A unit, I should not have had problems! Avoid!!
Customer Review: Not worth the price Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this timer because it had two outlets. The first one I received was faulty, the display did not activate and there was no way to start/set it.
The replacement I received after I returned it lasted exactly one day....again, the display went into default mode and I was unable to reset anything.
When I unplugged the timer from the outlet I noticed a rattling sound inside, as if something inside had popped (fuse?). There is also a 'dimple' on the side of the unit that I did not notice earlier.
Concerned that maybe my outlet was the problem I had my local electrician test it (no problem), then plugged in another timer and have had no problem since.
Most likely there is a flaw in the electrical wiring inside the Woods timer.
The Woods timer is going back to Amazon - again. This time for a refund.
