Tools and Hardware Reviews of Work Sharp WS2000 Tool Sharpener

Customer Review: Love the tool but results leave a little something to be desired
Summary: 4 Stars

The tool does exactly what it claims to do and does it well. I ruined the edge on a three quarter inch Marple chisel last year and never bothered to dress it up due to the time required and my dislike for honing blades. With this tool I had a new, sharp edge on the chisel in just a few minutes. I have also sharpened knives and axes with it with good results.

I do have a couple of small problems with it, though. I found that chisels narrower then one half inch did not grind straight across (it looked as if the chisel was slightly cocked in the sharpener) so from now on I will only sharpen chisles one half inches and wider. This isn't really a problem, though. Narrower chisels are easier to sharpen by hand and the WS2000 can still be used to achieve a proper angle on the chisel which can then be finished by hand. My other problem is with the finish. The 220 grit discs leave a fairly rough face on the chisel when compared with a stone. Not a big problem but having gotten used to what a wet stone can do it looks unsightly and purists will complain that a rough finish causes too much drag. The faces can, of course, be touch up by hand, but I plan on getting some very fine grit discs and see if a smoother face can be obtained.

I have some very fine carving tools which, while I have not tried sharpening them on the WS2000 yet, I will problably continue to sharpen by hand. While the machine runs very smoothly it fills a little overwhelming for the small stuff. Maybe when I ruin one of my small tools I'll try it out.

Overall a very good tool and I would recommend it to anyone who, like myself, both hates to hone blades and isn't very good at it. Just be aware that it won't give wet stone-like results and seems to be more suited for relatively larger tools.

Customer Review: Great value but you need a bit more
Summary: 4 Stars

The 2000 is a GREAT value. The preset (25 degrees) sharpening slot exerts pressure down on the blade to keep it square and true. The diamond coated rest even cleans off the wire formed on the back edge. However, you need to spend a bit more to really sharpen your plane irons and chisels. Important points to remember are:
1. The two supplied grits, 80 and 220, start the process. You will need at least two more grits (perhaps 400 and 1000 minimum) to finish the job. 1000 grit discs are more difficult to find in 6 inch PSA discs. Automotive sandpaper and spray adhesive will do the trick. Both discs and paper will have to be cut to match the 150 mm disc base.
2. You are limited to a maximum of a 1-5/8" blade in the sharpening slot. Plane irons wider than this will have to be sharpened freehand on top, which reduces the efficiency and value.
3. Since there is only 1 fixed angle available, you will not be able to grind a secondary bevel in the sharpening slot. You have to grind the whole face each time you sharpen using the slot.
4. The 3000 is double the price. For that, you get a sturdier unit, same motor set at lower RPMs, a glass disc base (an additional $20 for the 2000)with greater grit selection, and most importantly, adjustable angles in the slot (allowing easy secondary bevels). The slot is also wider (2 inch).

Bottom line: If I had to do it again, I'd probably get the 3000. However, it's close.

Customer Review: Great investment - so says my husband
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband saw the ad for this sharpener in a wood-working magazine, checked them out on their website and decided he had to have it. It has so far definitely lived up to the hype. We have a lawn maintenance business and he does a lot of lawn mower blade sharpening. Years ago he used a bench grinder to sharpen the blades until a friend recommended an angle grinder which he found much easier. He says this little machine beats them both by far. It's much easier to get a perfectly flat angled sharp edge with no curls or burs at the end to remove. He says you can get a sharp edge without removing as much material which means the blades will last longer. It's also much quieter and safer. Don't know yet how long the abrasive discs will last but it comes with replacements and extra replacement discs are quite reasonably priced.Work Sharp WSSA0002174 WS2000 Edge-Vision Abrasive KitWork Sharp WSSA0002005 Coarse Abrasive KitWork Sharp WSSA0002043 Fine Abrasive Kit All in all a very good deal. Customer Review: Got pencils?
Summary: 5 Stars

If you do, you probably have a pencil sharpener. Got chisels? If so, this is the equivalent of a pencil sharpener for chisels. Simple, slick and exact in no time. I have bought many of the cheap HF chisels for use in remodel work. I view them as throw-away items since they are often prone to hit a nail or some other surprise; not worth the time / cost to resharpen. Well, with the WS2000, all those nicked or dulled chisels are brought back to life instantly. Saves a ton of hassle to be able to always have sharp chisels on hand, much like pencils!

I just got the unit and am looking forward to doing the lathe tools. Even though the provided abrasives of 220 grit give an excellent utility edge, I am going to follow the suggestion of others and order another edge-vision wheel and put a couple of very fine grit abrasives on it for even finer honing when needed.

For $99, this is definitely a 5-star product!

Customer Review: Not quite what I hoped for ...
Summary: 2 Stars

After reading all of the great reviews here, perhaps my expectations were too high.

When I got my new WS2000, I watched the videos carefully, and I read and reread the manual. Next I practiced sharpening several old chisels to get the hang of using the machine. Finally, I got out my good chisels and began the real sharpening task. The results were not good. No matter how carefully I used the machine, I could not get a square edge on any of my chisels. I sharpened five chisels from 1-1/4" wide down to 1/4" wide. The widest chisel was noticeably out of square and the narrowest chisel was badly out of square. I tried to sharpen a block plane blade, and it too was not square.

Also, I found that the edges were quite burred after sharpening, despite the claim that the diamond coated sharpening port would handle deburring. I had to use a sharpening stone to effectively deburr the tools - not a huge problem, but unexpected.

Overall, I'm not happy with the machine's performance, and I certainly would not recommend it. It's a shame because I really wanted to like it.
