Tools and Hardware Reviews of Work Sharp WS2000 Tool SharpenerCustomer Review: no sharpening skills? This is for us! Summary: 5 Stars
First encountered this machine when an 83 year old professional woodworker and former shop teacher showed it to me. There it was amidst every sharpening jig and stone you could imagine; all of them gathering dust because this is his go to sharpener. He took a very sharp chisel and banged it point on into a steel edge putting divots into it that would make one cry. In 45 seconds he returned it to the drawer sharp enough to shave with. I bought one! Did the same thing and had the same results the first time I used it. What more can I say. This machine makes it almost impossible to not have sharp chisels and gouges and blades always ready and repairable within less than a minute. I keep it plugged in and clear of junk because walking over to it and putting an edge on anything takes only seconds...no oil, no jigs, just slide the tool in the 25 degree ramp hold it for a second or two (only) and a burn free surface emerges. The next higher up model has a few more bells and whistles that are equally functional. If you have the cash it is a bit more versatile but this one does the job for me.
Customer Review: Amazing. Summary: 5 Stars
I use this tool in my hobby shop and I LOVE it. It sharpens everything from machetes to screwdrivers. I also use it frequently to work the edges of my wood projects, or sand off corners and it works like a dream. I could not be happier with this tool. One of my favorites.
I purchase my own non-work sharp adhesive sanding discs and cut a whole in the middle. It works great and saves money.
I definitely recommend the knife sharpening attachment for this machine. It doubles its usefulness. In 2-3 minutes I can sharpen a very dull blade to one that cuts the hair on my hand with ease. Now all my blades in the shop are sharp. The women in the household LOVE the way it keeps their kitchen knives super sharp (that always gets me in the shop to fulfill their requests).
Only "complaint" I have that if the sanding disc adhesive doesn't come off the wheel all the way, and you reapply another disk, the wheel can become off center and whobble, making the material shake. This of course it easily fixed, and more of a cautionary mention.
Customer Review: My cheap tools have never worked better! Summary: 5 Stars
Really, all those weak moments where I grabbed the cheaper hand plane or bargain chisels have just about paid off. Usually it's just counted as a frustrating loss of time and money, but I put that HD block plane blade through the WS2000 and I covered the floor with walnut shavings in just a few minutes. Does it get any cheaper than HF? I put their 7 dollar set of chisels through and I was able to curve stop my huge chamfered edge. Admittedly, it did work better with my slightly more expensive chisel though, which makes me think it at least lets each tool reach its full potential (however low that may be).
This sharpener is really something I never thought I'd use, especially at $100. But then I looked through catalogs of sharpening stones, solutions and grinders - suddenly $100 didn't seem so bad.
I'm a little unsure of whether I'm doing the hand sharpening correctly though, since you sort of eyeball the angle and adjust this little handle bar like thing, but it seems to be working when I put the blades back into use.
Customer Review: What a useful little machine! Summary: 4 Stars
Got this and set it up, then I let the games begin, being a new toy and all. There is no set up, just read the instructions or watch the dvd, stick the supplied abrasive wheels on the turntables and let it fly. For my first attempt, I got an old chisel with more notches in it than the handle of a gunslinger's pistol. In less than two minutes, it was shiny, even, and could shave wood. Exceedingly sharpe. Now, everything in my shop that has a blade is sharp as a razor. The four stars is only because there is a learning curve on the underside sharpening technique and you can inadvertently mangle a screwdriver or narrow chisel if you're not careful. Once you get the hang of it, it's not a problem. Suggestions: Start with an old tool until you get your technique right. 2) GO EASY, it takes hardly any pressure to sharpen something, let the machine do the job for you.
Highly recommend this one for a hobbyist. If you have a more heavy shop, get the 3000 as it has a couple of bells and whistles that are handy.
Customer Review: better than expected Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a proffesional millworker with 9 years of experience. I will say that sharpening my chisels and planes irons have always been a challenge. It was not my strong point by any means. I purchased the WS2000 in hopes of squaring up and sharpening my tools better. I figured for $99 what would it hurt.
What a job it does. It worked straight out of the box. I now have razor sharp tools to work with. They are sharper than new and touching them up is a breeze and takes no time at all.
I worked them with the 80 grit and 120 grit on the machine than did fine sharpening by hand with 320 and 400 grit wet dry paper. I also purchased the leather strop wheel for the WS3000 and use it on my WS2000 machine. It works just fine. Now I can take that final burr off and polish the edge to a mirror finish. My left arm is nearly bald from checking my blade sharpness. ;-) I have sharpened about 15 chisles and planes since I bought this and all have turned out razor sharp. I would highly reccomend this tool.
