Tools and Hardware Reviews of Work Sharp WS2000 Tool Sharpener

Customer Review: A good sharpener for your chisels and axes
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used this to sharpen my long suffering chisels, which have never had a good edge since being used. It gets them done at the right angle, and quickly. As others have said, to go the final mile you do have to do some honing by hand, but I don't. I wouldn't recommend using it to sharpen your pocket knife, since this task has to be done freehand, and it is hard to maintain the correct angle this way. I like the Edge-Vision feature, you see the tool under the wheel through the slots, if you have good lighting.
I cleaned up a badly damaged axe, and even the face of a beat up hammer with this sharpener. They give you 2 wheels to use, and you can put different grits on each side of the wheel.
I would like it if they had some sort of fixture you could attach to set the angle of an edged tool you want to sharpen.

Customer Review: Works as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

I needed a quick and easy way to sharpen up a number of tools, and this seemed to be the best way to go if I was to do it myself (I'm a good woodworker, not a tool sharpener). The machine is virtually all assembled and the instructions are mercifully short - and best of all, it really works! Put the edge back on four chisels and ten dull turning chisels in no time.

The abrasive disk, which is something like a disk sander, didn't show much wear at all, so it should be good for another round or three of chisel sharpening.

After going to the lathe and having the wood peel off with the newly sharpened chisels like I was peeling an apple (not far from it - it was a chunk of green apple wood!) I would have to say it was well worth the money!

Customer Review: Some problems
Summary: 3 Stars

The device is rather convenient for sharpening the chisel-like tools. However, if you try to sharpen a mere knife, you'll discover that it is almost impossible. To be precise, one side is sharpened fine, but sharpening another side is a challenge.

Also, I failed to find the required 150 mm abrasive disks in hardware stores in my area (Mass.) The 6" disks I found don't have a central hole (not a big deal, of course) and are 2 mm wider. This is OK for the top side, however, to be used on the bottom side, the edge must be trimmed.

Summing up, to sharpen chisels and likes, the tool is fine. But it cannot substitute a classical grinder if you don't have one. Also, you are stuck with proprietor abrasive disks, especially for slotted ones.

Customer Review: Decent tool with limited appeal
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this some time ago for general sharpening tasks. For dressing screwdrivers etc. it does well. But the abrasives are not fine enough for sharpening anything; unless you just need to get a rough edge on an abused tool.

I recently got it out to clean up some used planes that I bought. The iron sharpening instructions are good but the port is too small (1 5/8) for anything but a few small speciality plane and block plane irons.

The special abrasives are limited, expensive and not readily available. Yes you can cut and use spray adhesives to use any sheet abrasives; but that is inconvenient at best.

Overall decently built and thought out just not all that useful.

Customer Review: Excellent for the hobbyist
Summary: 4 Stars

I posted a video review at my blog: affyx.com

The WS3000 is probably a better product, but I think you get 80% of the WS3000 for 50% of the price by going with the WS2000 - so a lot of bang for the buck, but definitely more suited towards amateurs like me.

I have never set hands on the Veritas Mk II system, but based on its larger disc (allowing flattening the bases of larger planes and more flexibility) and it's micro-bevel capabilites, it's probably worth the $89 bump over the WS3000.

I would recomend the WS2000 for hobbyists like myself, but the lack of more pro features keeps me from giving it a full 5 stars.
