Tools and Hardware Reviews of Yard Butler CA-36 Compost AeratorCustomer Review: Better than nothing for enclosed compost bins Summary: 3 Stars
The best way to turn a compost heap is to get a garden fork and just go to town, but if you have those closed plastic bins (like I do now), that's not a viable option.
That's why I bought this compost tool and it's better than nothing since at least it helps move the compost around. However, it's not easy to push the tool down into the heap and half the time, the tines don't open up when you pull it back up. The tines are also quite short, so they don't catch much when they do open.
Still, I haven't found a better alternative and if you use a up and down motion (rather like churning butter) it helps somewhat.
In short, I give it a qualified recommendation if you have no other way of turning your contained compost pile.
Customer Review: Non functional. Hard to open the prongs manually! Summary: 1 Stars
The prongs of my unit will not open in compost. So I tried to open them manually. One side is so tight I cannot open it manually without difficulty. There is nothing I can do to fix this since it is riveted and I will break it to loosen it. Any company that sells such a defective item should be avoided because even the slightest examination would have indicated this is defective. Skip this item completely unless you like sending items back to Amazon.com. I think Lewis Tools is also one I will not buy from ever again. This item is made in Mexico and not examined in the United States. I am packing up my tool for return, considering this purchase a complete preventable inconvenience.
Customer Review: The aerator is not the Compost Crank Summary: 1 Stars
This Aerator is not the Compost Crank. Amazon should sell the real thing. I have been using it since April, 2010 and it works so much better than any other tool. My back would really ache after turning my compost bins until I bought the Compost Crank. It is designed somewhat like a large auger. I actually turn my compost piles much more often because it is now so much easier. When I could not find the tool to purchase in my area, I called the owner of the company. I found out that the Compost Crank is a small family business in Arizona and the tool is completely made in the U.S. I was willing to pay a little more money to support a business that doesn't outsource.
Customer Review: Little disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this tool because I had read some glowing reviews on it. I am disappointed that it doesn't work better than it does. It is not easy to push the tool into the compost pile, and the wings that are supposed to open when lifting the tool, usually don't open. I have tried oiling the wings, and that helped - they now open sometimes instead of never!
Someone should design a new tool with longer wings and more of them. That would do that job better. Till then, this is probably the best you're going to get - unless you go back to the basic pitchfork.
Customer Review: Perfect for the enclosed compost bin Summary: 5 Stars
This item came quickly and looks to be very well made. If you have a plastic compost bin, this is an must-have item. I've found that jabbing the tool into the compost a few times (without completely removing the tool from the compost prior to each jab) will get it to the bottom of the heap in no time. Then, rock it back and forth while pulling upward. The rocking action will cause the wings to deploy outward (I have no idea why this is) and also create a hole down through the pile. And that air hole should help accelerate the decaying process.
