Tools and Hardware Reviews of Yard Machines 31C-040-800 Snow Fox 12.5-Inch 8.5 Amp Electric Snow ThrowerCustomer Review: Think before buying Summary: 1 Stars
MTD purchased Troy-Bilt a few years back and has decided they have no interest in supporting the dealer network or customers who bought PRE-MTD Troy-Bilt equipment. Specifically the Troy-Bilt 42012 Snow Thrower. They make no recommended engine replacement, offer no spec for the engine refuse to even attempt to work with Tecumseh on a recommended replacement. In short, all dealers are unsupported as are the customers. What they are interested in is taking the Troy-Bilt name and that is it. A reputable company (the REAL Troy-Bilt) would have worked with the dealer (their dealer who originally sold the machine) to find a replacement then document it to their entire dealer network so it would become a non-issue. Troy-bilt chose not to do this. I would think twice if I am a consumer or dealer on how MTD, brands also Club Cadet, Yardman, Bolens, McColloch, and MTD treat their dealers and past customers. If you looking to purchase something the manufacture will stand behind, don't purchase this. To MTD it is disposable and so are their customers. Hope this helps.
Customer Review: OK, but not for everyone Summary: 3 Stars
I live in New England and thought this little snow blower would be a good compliment for my regular large gas operated snowblower. I purchased this for my sidewalk, porch and deck. The electric machine works OK, but found a shovel was a better choice for my needs. Here's why;
a) I needed to lift machine and "skim" the top layer of deeper snow, then the ground level i.e. shovels are lighter
b) Extention cord was a hassle (pulled out, got caught on plants and lawn items) i.e. shovels don't have cords. I used a cold weather extention cord, ordinary ones get stiff in the cold.
c) Narrow width of machine made me go back and forth many times to clear front porch i.e. shovels clear wider path & quicker
Good things:
Maybe good for people with small amount / infrequent / shallow snow fall / small area to clear
Amazon was very easy to work with on my return (first time I have returned anything on Amazon)
Overall not recommended for heavier ssnow fall areas or for larger areas to clear.
Customer Review: Worked well Summary: 4 Stars
I know that's not a great title for the review but the condtions I used it in were not ideal. Got the product yesterday & it assembles quite easily. I was able to use it the next day on heavy, wet snow, 8-10 inches. I live in Massachusetts in an area that doesn't get too many light & fluffy storms. I got the product to clean off my deck not for the driveway or any paths I need. It does shoot the snow very far when aimed straight ahead. The right & left shoots are not as right & left as I would have liked - more slightly to either direction but good enough. I used the "wheelie" method to cut off the top layer & then redid the lower level. It did make a few "grinding" sounds when on the wet stuff but it never stopped or jammed up. Once I got the hang of it I thought it worked pretty well, I was able to clear down to surface. Shovelling may be quicker but it kills my back. I know it's only 1 storm so I can't speak to the quality of the product. It did do a good job on what I bought it for, I just wouldn't expect to use it on my driveway.
Customer Review: Solid performance in a small package Summary: 4 Stars
My wife and I have a fairly long, paved driveway by most North American "suburban" standards. However, we weren't willing to shell out $400 for some of the large, gas powered snow machines. This machine does a perfectly nice job.
Pros:
- No gasoline needed
- Easy to operate and quick startup
- Lightweight enough for my 10 year old daughter to run
- It will handle snow much deeper than the "recommended" height if you go slow
Cons:
- You need to manage the electric cord
- Snow is not thrown very far (this can be good or bad actually)
- Narrow swath compared to gas models
- Mostly plastic parts (however this is a good thing if you run over the electric cord...trust me)
Unless you absolutely need a wider and heftier snow thrower, this performed very well during a snowy Chicago winter. The big plus for us was saving back strain for my wife. We would generally work on the driveway together, and it worked great.
Customer Review: works like a champ Summary: 5 Stars
I have used it twice this year.
I have, and I'm guessing based on how much extension cord I used, an 80 foot driveway partial gravel and partial cement. Two cement porches with 2 and 3 steps. It will work down to the ground. With the right angle I never throw any rocks from the gravel. On the cement it works to the ground.
Works on wet or dry snow if it is over 6" plan to go over twice. I dunno how much time it saves but it surely saves on the back ache I used to get after shoveling. Like 100 fold better it isn't even close. I am lazy and this is a lazy mans shovel.
It blows 20" or more forward and 3-6' to either left or right. The only improvement would be more angels to shoot then just the three. If I could shoot it just a little to either side instead of all the way right or left it would be even better than it is. That is my only complant if you even wanna call it that.
I don't even own a shovel. With this I never will either.
