Tools and Hardware Reviews of Yard Machines 31C-040-800 Snow Fox 12.5-Inch 8.5 Amp Electric Snow ThrowerCustomer Review: great little machine Summary: 4 Stars
Bought the snow fox last year and used it twice last year.
It is great for small amounts of snow.
It pushes a lot of snow when it is not angled.
When the blades are angled it does not blow the snow far enough
to get to the other side of my driveway so I usually set the blade
straight and work an an angle or parallel to the driveway so
I am snow blowing the shorter part of the driveway.
We received a large snow fall (12-16 inches) in the mid atlantic region today and it was great for getting the snow off my deck and driveway. It works best with about 6" or less so I cleared off
the driveway three times. It is so light and easy to maneuver.
I wish the handle was a bit longer as I am tall and have to bend over to reverse the snow thrower when I am working parallel to the driveway. I also think if there were larger wheels it would be easier to operate.
Well worth the money and a fun machine.
Customer Review: Decent results, good in a pinch. Summary: 4 Stars
We've gotten decent results from this small, light snowthrower. It clears a path rather quickly and if you can push a vacuum cleaner, you can use this machine.
However - the cord isn't very long and the end doesn't seat especially well in the receptacle. As a result, you'll need an extension cord as well as some patience because every now and again, the cord will flop out of the receptacle and you'll have to push it back in. This happens not just when the cords are extended to their full length, but also when they're coiled close to the unit.
I will say that I am not the most mechanically-inclined person on earth (just ask my husband) so my problems with the item may be due to simple ineptitude!
We will probably upgrade to a larger, gas-powered thrower because we have a rather large lot to clear, but I can see where this unit would be great for people with smaller single-family dwellings or townhouses
Customer Review: Very Impressive Machine Summary: 5 Stars
Washington, DC this winter has had the highest snowfall since snowfall records began in 1884. After the first storm on 12/18/09, and reading all the reviews, I bought the Yard Machine through Amazon.com. Since 12/18 we have had two other significant snow falls, and I can't say enough about this little guy. It has saved my back. I live in a townhouse second from the end unit. With the Yard Machine I cleared my single car driveway and sidewalk plus two other townhomes in addition to a single family home with a 4 cars long driveway and sidewalk with snow as thick as 14" (with two swipes). I'm 52 years old, and after all that I energy to do more. It handles so easily, a twelve or thirteen year old child could use it. I can't understand why local hardware stores don't carry them in stock. No gas or oil to mess with. You just need an long extension cord. I recommended it to all my neighbors, coworkers, and friends.
Customer Review: Did not work with 8" of snow Summary: 3 Stars
There are misleading review comments on this item. This snow blower DOES NOT WORK with 8" of snow.
It may be fine per the 6" of snow per its specification, but it is NOT CAPABLE of throwing snow far at all with 8" of snow. It lacks both the height and power to throw heavier snow which is when you want the snow blower to really work and save you the back breaking work of shoveling.
This snow blower is for small homes/driveways in areas that get less than 6" of snow. The only time it throws snow far is when the chute is pointing straight ahead. That is not suitable for most small homes because you will be throwing snow back on the road or on neighbors yard. You want the snow to be thrown to the side, and this just DOES NOT throw 8" of snow more than 4 feet to the side, and it is not designed to do that.
For less than 6" of snow, I don't really need a snow blower.
Customer Review: Good so far. Summary: 4 Stars
Hi, another member of the "bad-back"club here, I picked up the SnowFox today and have used it only once, so I can't comment on long term reliability. However, blowing 3-6" of wet/dry snow (from two differenht snowfalls) worked better than I was expecting.
The Fox is light, easy to handle and seems powerful enough for the cutting width. When discharging to the sides, the snow won't blow more than 7-10 feet, but I did my 2-car wide driveway by starting in the middle (going length-wise) and that seemed to work good. The sidewalks were a breeze and kind of fun to do. As expected the chord is a pain to handle but that is an issue with every piece of electric outdoors equipment, not the fox's fault.
To re-cap, the fox works better than expected, is light, easy to handle and powerful enough. The negatives are the limited side discharge distance and the dance with the chord. I am pleased...
