We've had a huge bag of supposedly dead batteries sitting the garage for over a year now. It would just sit there and stare at me daily. I knew that they could all be dead. After ruling out the cheapo $2 testers, I purchased this one and gave it a try last night.
After reading the instructions thoroughly, I tested each battery 3 times. It took about an hour to go through them all, but I was impressed with my findings. Quite a few still had 40-60% power and other had 80-100%! The 40-60% crowd would still suffice for low-powered items like TV remotes, etc.
I divided them all up into individual zip-type bags (making sure none of the contacts touched) and labeled them: 0-20% (for recycling), 40-60%, and 80-100%.
You can see in the photo I posted the results. Definitely a must-own product. Wish I bought it years ago!
Why 4 stars? The storage pouch should be included, not an extra $6.00.

I bought this tester on Feb. 3, 2010 and received it on the 6th. How's that for expediency in shipping?? I have nothing negative to say about this tester. I've tried a number of old and new batteries on it and have always come up with an accurate reading. But, for God's sake people, read the instructions first. They state more than once that you should test EACH battery 2-3 times for the most accurate readings. Batteries often play possum (especially older, seldom used batteries) by giving out a first reading which is actually higher than the true capacity, and vice versa. Under the 2 second load produced by the tester, your batteries will show their true capacitance, provided you follow instructions and test MORE THAN ONCE. In the 12 hours I've owned it, I've tested several dozen batteries of various types. I tested each 3 times. I just can't find any negative features about this item. As stated in several other reviews, the ZTS Mini Multi-Battery Tester is a "load" tester which gives much better readings than non-load testers. I also have the cheaper Delkin Aa/aaa Battery Tester and both testers are pretty much in sync with battery readings 90% of the time with the ZTS occasionally reading one bar higher. I have a bit more confidence using both testers.
After going through the almost 40 supposedly "dead" batteries my kids have accumulated, I found about 12 with still 80% life; another 9 with 40-60% life; and another 5 or so with still 20% life which will work fine in TV remotes. So these testers will pay for themselves in no time and in the long run save me money.

I first purchased an inexpensive battery tester that only checks the voltage. This was not useful at all. As noted by another reviewer, the battery voltage without load is a poor test of the battery. A bad battery can show almost full voltage. Load testing is the best way to test batteries. I find this unit works perfect on alkaline batteries.
I have found a problem with testing 1.2 volt NiMH AA and AAA rechargeable batteries. The battery tester showed a good charge and yet the batteries would not operate a device properly. I found that the old batteries would also not hold a charge. I suspect the tester should place a higher load when testing these batteries. If your rechargeable batteries are old, and do not show 100% after a week or two after a charge then replace them if they are not doing the job.

This is the third Mini Multi-Battery Tester I have purchased. This tester
has saved me enough money by NOT throwing away batteries that they have
paid for themselves. The batteries this testers uses have lasted a very
long time. I would very highly recommend buying this tester or one very
similiar to it. I have seen other tester's that look like it that test
even more batteries than this one will test. These tester's are a little
on the pricey side but they will actually save you money and in my
opinion are more than worth their small price. Batteries can get very
expensive very quick!!!!
